Correction..the PC-7 was performing a solo air display, not a training sortie as mentioned above.

ALOR SETAR: Thousands of Universiti Utara Malaysia students and their parents watched in horror as a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Pilatus PC-7 exploded and caught fire in midair during a solo airshow at 10.15am on Thursday.

The 33-year-old pilot was manoeuvring the aircraft to thrill the crowd at the opening of the UUM convocation expo when the plane’s engine compartment, in front of the cockpit, exploded and caught fire.

The crowd watched helplessly as the pilot bailed out of the diving plane, with thick black smoke trailing from the engine compartment, before it crashed behind the Bukit Tangga Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) next to the UUM campus.

Although the pilot managed to eject from the plane, his body, still strapped to the seat, was found some 10m from the wreckage.

The body was airlifted from the scene to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for a post-mortem.

A police spokesman said the plane had earlier left the RMAF College in Kepala Batas, Alor Setar, to perform at the airshow.

RMAF has used the aircraft since 1982 to train its pilots at its flight college.

The Engrish has suffered a technical problem too.

But condolences to the family. Pity his children, losing a dad at such a young age. I hope TUDM really really takes care of them until adulthood.

Al Fatihah to the pilot.

As a former student of UUM, I feel very sad and shock that the Pesta Convocation started off like this. From the clips, most of the students are running towards the crash side after the impact to have a look, because from the thick black smoke I think they thought the aircraft crashed somewhere around the campus' golf course behind the sports complex. The actual crash side, the MARDI office, is located outside the compound of the university.

A similar sort of crash took place on 2 April - this time Brazilian Air Force:

Brazil's air force has started an inquiry after a pilot with the Esquadrilha da Fumaca aerobatic team was killed after his Embraer T-27 aircraft crashed during a display at Lages in the southern Santa Catarina state.

The team had been performing at an event commemorating the 68th anniversary of the Aeroclube de Lages, founded in 1942.

Video images of the moments preceding the crash indicate that the T-27 entered a steep climb, rolling to the left several times, before entering a rapid dive.
