Wilson Kook 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2010 (edited) Here's the article. Enjoy folks. SEPANG, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- Iran's second largest airline, Mahan Air, made its maiden landing at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Thursday. Its area manager (Far East & Dubai), Majid Kargaran, said the plane touched down at 10.37am after an eight-hour flight from Shiraz, Iran. "It is a tremendous day for us and we hope to increase the frequencies to three to four flights a week," he said. Established in 1991, the Mahan Air currently owns a fleet of 26 Airbus and Boeing jet transports and operates scheduled passenger service to 12 international destinations in Europe, Far East and West Asia. Deputy director general of marketing division at Tourism Malaysia, Datuk Amiruddin Abu, meanwhile said the tourist arrivals from Iran had increased tremendously from only 12,309 in 2005 to 101,664 in 2009. "We have seen a lot of people, either individuals, family members as well as businessmen coming from Iran. "The Iranians have the advantage because they did not require visas to enter Malaysia," he said at the welcoming ceremony here today. The inclusion of Mahan Air will see the number of West Asian airlines serving KLIA increase to nine, offering 64 flights weekly to various capital cities. Currently, the other West Asian airlines flying to KLIA are Iran Air, Emirates, Gulf Air, Saudi Arabian Airline, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Kuwait Airways and Yemenia Yemen Airways. Malaysia Airlines also offered 16 flights weekly to West Asia while AirAsia X recently started flying to Abu Dhabi with five flights weekly. -- BERNAMA More and more exotic airlines coming to our shores. Naim 6 Report post Posted January 28, 2010 Thanks, Tamizi, more news ... === January 28, 2010 18:03 PM MAHB Aims To Attract More New Airlines To KLIA SEPANG, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) expects another three to four new airlines, particularly from Asia, to fly into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) this year. Senior general manager of operations, Datuk Azmi Murad, said the airport operator had received a lot of enquiries from airlines to fly into Malaysia. "We have also approached other airlines to come here and look forward to see more new airlines after Iran-based Mahan Air in 2010," he told reporters on the sidelines after the inaugural flight of Mahan Air here Thursday. He said Mahan Air's presence would increase the connectivity at KLIA, particularly to West Asia. Mahan Air, the second largest airline in Iran, made its maiden flight to KLIA today, bringing the number of airlines into KLIA to 59. Azmi said MAHB was confident of attracting more airlines to fly here. "We can also expect to see the current airline operators increase their flight frequencies and add new destinations through KLIA," he said. MAHB also targeted passenger volume to grow by five per cent this year from 29.6 million passengers recorded in 2009. MAHB manages and operates 39 airports in Malaysia, five international, 16 domestic and 18 short take-off and landing ports. It also has operations in India and Turkey. -- BERNAMA http://bernama.com/bernama/v5/news_lite.php?id=471936
