Air France A380

Recommended Posts

In a travel trade event in Singapore yesterday, Air France has confirmed that by the time it receives its third A380 in October 2009, A380 services will be launched to Singapore.

The first A380 it receives will be dedicated to US services (nothing mentioned about which city but I suspect it will be JFK or Montreal) and the second will be used on the Tokyo-Narita run.

Narita will consequently see daily A380s from SIA and Air France, but there certainly will be more to come.

Air France-KLM said Thursday it would start daily flights between Paris and New York from November with the new Airbus A380 superjumbo, the world's biggest passenger jet.

A Singapore Airlines flight last month became the first commercial A380 flight to arrive in Paris. but Air France said in a statement that its airline would be the first to fly the superjumbo on a route across the Atlantic.

The A380 superjumbo jet can carry up to 853 passengers, but Air France plans to configure its flights from Paris to New York's John F. Kennedy airport with 538 passengers: nine in premier class, 80 in business and 449 in economy. Air France-KLM, which has ordered 12 A380s, said four of them will begin service late this year and in early 2010.

Air France and KLM are members of the SkyTeam airline alliance.

Get a seat on board the inaugural flight

This October, Air France will auction off 380 seats on board its inaugural Airbus A380 Paris - New York (November 20) and New York - Paris (November 21) flights.

Three great reasons to participate in the auction:

  • experience the first Air France transatlantic voyage of the A380,
  • take advantage of exclusive offers in New York and Paris, including shopping, private sales, and a variety of galleries and museums,
  • support the Air France Foundation "street children" program, as auction profits will go toward this worthy cause.

Air France is considering deploying Airbus A380 aircraft on the short route between Paris and London Heathrow.

The airline has three of the type, which are serving New York JFK and Johannesburg.

But a spokeswoman for the airline says that the carrier is looking at other options to exploit the capacity and, while the plan has not been firmed, it is not ruling out putting the 538-seat jet on the route.

While not giving full details of the reasoning behind the potential deployment, which could occur "in the next few weeks", she indicates that pilot training and a desire to maximise the use of the aircraft are among the considerations.

She adds that Paris-London is a busy route and other carriers have shown that they can justify large-capacity aircraft on relatively short, high-density sectors.

Air France: London A380 flight stops jet sitting idle in Paris

Air France is to go ahead with deploying its Airbus A380 aircraft on the Paris-London sector, in order to avoid parking the aircraft unused for long periods in France.

The carrier's summer schedule shows that its daily AF995 service from Johannesburg arrives in Paris Charles de Gaulle at 06:05, but does not depart again as AF990 until 23:20.

This means the 538-seat aircraft would remain idle in Paris for nearly 18 hours, and Air France believes it can capitalise on the downtime by offering a high-capacity link to London.

"A very early arrival in Paris and a late departure in the evening leaves the aircraft available during the day to operate the Paris-London-Paris route, in between two long-haul flights," says a spokeswoman for Air France.

It states that the flight, designated AF1980/1981 will be available between 12 June and 30 August. The service will depart Paris at 10:05 and arrive back in the French capital at 15:05, slotting between the South African sectors.

Air France is selling business-class and economy-class fares on the route, although it has not listed a first-class option.

The airline usually uses Airbus A320-family aircraft on the Paris-London route but the carrier also offers a turboprop link with ATR 72s.

"The crew of the A380 operating between Paris and London are fully qualified to fly on this type of aircraft and have all flown the A380 between Paris, Johannesburg and New York," the spokeswoman adds. Air France uses the A380 for a daily New York JFK flight.

Air France, which has three A380s, is to introduce a fourth in the second half of this year, and deploy it on the Tokyo Narita route.

Viva Air France!

The flight also marks an astonishing feat for LHR for being the only airport in the entire planet Earth which serves the A380s of 4 out of 5 current operators of the mighty aircraft; SQ, QF, EK and AF.

Air France will operate Airbus A380 aircraft on its routes to Dubai, starting 5 December, and Los Angeles, starting 28 May 2012.

The carrier will serve the Paris Charles de Gaulle-Dubai route with daily flights using the A380, which will be redeployed from Tokyo for the winter season as a result of lower seasonal demand in Tokyo.

The airline will operate twice-daily Paris Charles de Gaulle-Los Angeles flights using the A380. The carrier added that the route is part of the transatlantic joint venture operated by Air France-KLM, Alitalia and Delta.

Air France said that it will operate six A380 aircraft for the winter schedule of 2011 and eight for the summer of 2012.
