SQ to fly A380 to ZRH

Recommended Posts

according to two swiss news portals, Singapore Airlines may start using the A380 on one daily flight to Zurich starting with the winter timetable, replacing the two daily 777-300 flights. Also Paris is a considered A380 destination.

Finally the A380 arrives in continental europe ;)

Well, SQ is trying to deploy the A380 on as many of its popular high traffic routes as possible because it has found out that the operating costs are about 21% lower (per seat) compared to their usual B777 aircraft. So such a move is not surprising.

Passengers' response to the A380 has been tremendous. Even a very jaded friend of mine - she thinks all planes are the same once you are inside and in the air - who flew from Paris to Singapore yesterday came off the A380 full of praise for it. The quiet cabin and the way the plane rode through the turbulence that one expects over India and the Bay of Bengal impressed her tremendously . . . and she said the flight was absolutely full !!!

Zurich is a very high yield route for SQ - frankly MH should re-consider this route again (and position itself appropriately to achieve a balanced load factor and yield) - and it would not be surprising if indeed the A380 is deployed there. In the meantime, HKG will get it before ZRH (yet to hear any announcement of A380s on the SIN-ZRH route).

MAS' slogan 'going beyond expectations' actually means leaving all the lucrative routes to their competition! they seem to be 'going' from everywhere!

Unless MH get their revenue management in order, it is unlikely we'll see MH return to ZRH any time soon.

Actually I think SQ is not doing so well with the double daily. I have done a few trips in the past year and there are plenty of empty seats, and flying economy is great as I get 3 seats all to myself...

This is the way for SQ to cut costs and capacity. 1 x A380 is surely less capacity than 2 x 77W. There is also too much competition from the Middle eastern airlines.

MH should have stayed and increased their frequency to capture more premium traffic. To come back in now would be very difficult if even SQ has to cut capacity.

Anyway, this is just a rumour started by someone who used to work at the airport. The truth is that the Airport is not yet ready - the taxiways, gates have to be upgraded. By the time these are done, business might pick up again and it would make sense again to upgrade to 2 x 77W.

Maybe a daily 744 service will work as MH has the laziest 744 fleet in the world even if they only get 60 % they have at least enough to break even

If they have difficulty in filling 2x 77W's, why did not they change to 1x 77W and 1x 772 ? At least they'll still be spread among the day i.s.o. 'forcing' people onto 1 flight/frequency...

It is not so simple I guess - the A380 has a certain "pull" for pax too - it could rejuvenate that route!

Besides, SQ has already reported that the A380's operating costs per seat is 21% lower than that of the 77W. So that is the "pull" for SQ. Besides, with A380 deliveries coming in hard and fast, SQ needs to deploy them somewhere!

SQ's 3-class 777-200 do not have the range to fly to ZRH.

CDG, HKG and now the talk of ZRH too... not to mention PER, ADL, BNE, NGO to the A330... At least 777 goes to LHR and SFO. Hopefully it is possible to capture a few more.
