Just go to show that MAS was a scapegoat in that Qantas issue....

Don't feel to bad LH teknik in Manila are the scapegoats according to the Australian media with the latest QF incident involving the JQ A333. It's seems easier to lay the blame at off-shore maintenance.

-MPB and -MPD are shown are 'to be cargo converted' according to an online database, although with recent world events this may have changed.

Something is not quite right with the thread starter.

9M-MHL - The B744 named (Kuala Lumpur) is 9M-MPQ

9M-MHM - The B744 named (Penang) is 9M-MPL

9M-MHN - The B744 named (Malacca) is 9M-MPM

9M-MHO - The B744 named (Alor Setar) is 9M-MPO

9M-MH* series aircraft appeared on 4 AB6s (9M-MHA until 9M-MHD), 2 B742s (9M-MHI and 9M-MHJ) and 1 B743 (9M-MHK), based on the wikipedia page of MH's Fleet.

The thread starter is absolutely right about the names of the MH 744.

The 9M-MH* series -400 birds were GE powered. MH got rid of them by late 90s (non-Combis) and the two Combis were sold to Boeing early 2003, IIRC. The names of the GE powered are as listed at the start of this thread. Subsequently the names of KL, Penang, Melaka and Alor Setar were transferred to the PW powered 744 which MAS took delivery after they got rid of the GE powered birds.

To make the matter more confusing MH's sole 743 was originally named "Kota Kinabalu" and the 2x 742 had some other city names. Again, the names were reshuffled as a result of the retrenchment of the GE powered 744. The 2x 742 became Kota Kinabalu and Kuching. If you search the photo database (A.net or JP.net), it will reveal all the history.

Naturally, it has to be "Kuala Lumpur" first, when MH received their first 744. Now the last pax 744 (9M-MPQ) is named as Kuala Lumpur. However, we have yet to see any city names on the 2x new 744F to date. May be MH is getting sick of the game of naming their aircraft. ;)

Nobody in flight operations ever refer to an aircraft to its nose name, nor do any cabin crew that I know of.

Why did they replace the GE planes with PW planes? Can't they just change the engines, rather than the planes?

The 777 would be good for QF to start a european service wait 10 yers later for QF to have an incident with the plane

There was a time, about a decade ago, that MH was in bad shape and need cash. They had a "sale and leaseback" program where MH-owned aircraft were sold and leased back for a specific time period. That was just before Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad was created to buy off MH assets. Therefore as of now some MH aircraft are owned by PMB, while others were owned by other companies such as SALE. The lease agreement is expiring an MH will pay the price of the damage done by previous management.

Of the 4 GE-powered B744, 2 were combis. I believe the 2 sold to Qantas were the pure pax version. While it is physically possible to change the engine (GE to PW) there are many systems that need to be changed too, therefore it is not practical or cost-effective.

As Captain Radzi said it is not possible to only swapping the Engines on aircraft. At least it is NOT viable economically. IIRC Boeing designed the 787s to be engine swappable.

There is also something to do with political deals and decision as to why MH switched from GE powered 744 to PW powered 744.

9M-MHI, B747-236B, spotted "Johor Bahru" in late 90s, became "Kota Kinabalu", She is currently with MASKargo as TF-AAA, after a brief stint as N361FC with Focus Air.

9M-MHJ, B747-236B, spotted "Kuching" in late 90s, remained "Kuching" before MAS sold her. She is currently with MASKargo as TF-AAB after a brief stint as N362FC with Focus Air.

9M-MHK, B747-3H6C, spotted as "Kota Kinabalu"

9M-MPK B747-4H6 became "Johor Bahru" since delivery.

Cheng Kit, why do you copy and paste TK's photo?

To show the evidence and I don't have the photos.

But would those 2 planes be gone from MAS forever or a short term lease to Al Wafeer Air?
