AirAsia X Orders 10 Airbus A350-900 + 5 Option at Paris Air Show 2009

Recommended Posts

A bit difficult to bend mind around the A350 being dismissed as too expensive at 317.4M apiece whilst talking to manufacturer B about the B787-10 at 325.8M a shot :D

Airbus prices are for a fully configured plane, Boeing prices are for an empty one - so fittings will cost extra.

However, Boeing might end up giving more discount and GE will also discount their engines to outbid RR.

Direct Europe routes is no longer in the plans i think its good they cancelled it or it might bleed their already tight bottomline. Looking at how AirAsia likes play around with orders it might better if they also defer and convert the current A330-900neo orders and wait out for the 251t steroid version which is expected to fly post year 2020. They would rather wait it out than cut the 40+ seats allocated for the A330neo just for the range which would increase the base ticket price as well. Another option is all Europe bound flights on the A330neo will be one stop via DonMuang Thailand.

Well, they don't really need the 251t version as the 242t version can reach London unless headwinds are severe. 251t version is also going to cost more to buy and operate. I don't think they are too bothered about EU services now. I think they really want to see if they can tap Japan-US market. If that is the case, the 251t A339 will be able to serve US mainland from Japan. So AirAsia X Japan may be set up to do that.

seriously doubt Boeing will give such a heavy discount percentage than or more than AB - and further more the order if it comes will not be a big number of 787s - at most about 20. And further more not sure if D7 will want to fly truly long haul as Tony have said a few times that low cost carrier cannot make profit over long haul ie in flights more than 12 - 14 hours. In fact he did mentioned the max would be 8 hours or under and that the aircrafts can be better utilised too. From Japan to West Coast US, even the A333 can do it as Delta have been using this plane for its trans-pacific flights.

Fernandes calls A350 too expensive for AirAsia X

AirAsia X is understood to have been eyeing an order for additional A350s or Boeing 787s to complement its fleet of A330-300s, and 66 on-order A330-900s.
Its 10 A350-900s on order are scheduled to start delivering in 2019, Flight Fleets Analyzer shows.
In the same video, however, Fernandes also appeared to throw cold water on a return to flying to London, saying that there were "no plans" to resume services to the UK capital.

The Flightglobal report above seems to suggest that Airasia X will proceed with the A339 order but is now looking at what to do with its A350 order. A decision is needed this year because deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2019.

Airasia X may decide to take the A350s and lease them out if they cannot find a use for them. A350s are in demand. They have already set up a leasing company:

Hahaha, I presume this is a joke!

Well, Airasia X Aviation Capital can lease them to a new startup airline like Airasia X Japan.

We will soon find out what they want to do with that A350 order - they did say that a decision will be needed this year.
