AirAsia Group Berhad 1Q2020 Preliminary Operating Statistics

AirAsia Group Berhad (“AirAsia” or “the Group”) is pleased to announce the operating statistics for the First Quarter of the Financial Year 2020 (“1Q2020”).

Despite the weak travel demand amid increasing and unprecedented travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, AirAsia reported a healthy group-wide load factor of 80%, which was better than its expected 77%. This was achieved through proactive capacity management, particularly in the months of February and March, with the cuts most notable in AirAsia Malaysia and AirAsia Thailand. 

The Group Consolidated AOCs¹ reported a steady load factor of 78%. The number of passengers carried was down 21% year-on-year (“YoY”) to 9.9 million as capacity was reduced by 11%.

AirAsia X Berhad (“AirAsia X” or “the Company”) today announces its operating statistics for the first quarter of 2020 (“1Q20”).

The Company posted a Passenger Load Factor (“PLF”) of 74% in 1Q20, down by 9 percentage points (“ppt”) year-on-year (“YoY”). During the quarter, the number of passengers carried declined by 25% YoY to 1,141,713 passengers, while the Company’s Available Seats per Kilometre (“ASK”) capacity reduced by 21% YoY to 6,874 million. The significant drop in available capacity and passengers carried is a result of the severe impact of COVID-19 which has affected travel demand globally and as part of the airline’s mitigation strategy, the Company has reduced flight frequency around the network and temporarily suspended certain routes.

In February 2020, during the onset of the COVID-19, AirAsia X Malaysia implemented capacity management to reduce flight frequency to China as travel restrictions tightened and demand softened. In the following month, capacity management had been executed in almost 90% of the Company’s network, including Australia, Japan, South Korea and India. A total of four routes were terminated in March, namely Tianjin, Wuhan, Lanzhou and Jaipur. By proactively managing the adverse effects of the pandemic and to contain operational costs, AirAsia X Malaysia announced the temporary hibernation of its entire fleet and suspended all scheduled operations for a period of 2 months effective 28 March 2020. The fleet size of AirAsia X Malaysia remains at 24 A330s as at the end of March 2020.

Malaysia Airports records 98.8pc fall in April passenger movements

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) announced that passenger movements throughout its system shrank by 98.8 per cent year-on-year last month to only 137,000 passengers amid the movement control order (MCO) enforcement.

The international sector registered a 99.3 per cent decline with a passenger traffic of 39,000 in April while domestic passenger movements declined by 98.4 per cent to just over 97,000 passengers.

T7 Global and Siemens won the contract to replace KUL T1 baggage handling system. Let's hope it takes less than 15 minutes for bags to be delivered from the C gates now

KLIA seems to be growing at 2m pax per quarter. If it continues, we should reach 15m pax by Q3 or Q4. That would mean we are back to pre pandemic levels. I wonder if that will happen.
