Airasia Preliminary Operating Statistics For the 3rd Quarter of the Financial Year Ended 2015


In 3Q15, the Group[1] recorded an increase of 3 percentage points (“ppts”) in its load factor at 81%.Number of passengers carried increased double digit by 20% year-on-year (“YoY”) to 12.88 million ahead of the 15% increase in capacity. At the end of the quarter under review, the Group’s total fleet size stood at 168 A320 aircraft.


Malaysia AirAsia (“MAA”) achieved a marked improvement in load factor of 82% in 3Q15, up 5 ppts YoY. The number of passengers carried during the reported period saw a good 19% increase YoY to 6.30 million, ahead of the capacity addition of 11%. The double digit increase in the number of passengers carried was attributed to the recovery of demand from China and the heightened demand for travel during the month long Hari Raya or Eid celebration. During the quarter, one aircraft from MAA was novated to Asia Aviation Capital Ltd (“AAC”) and subsequently leased to Pakistan International Airlines (“PIA”), and one additional aircraft was transferred from Indonesia AirAsia (“IAA”) to MAA. MAA therefore ended the quarter with a total fleet of 81 aircraft. In 3Q15, MAA started operating seven new routes: Kuala Lumpur – Chongqing, Dhaka, Goa, Kaohsiung, Manila and Pattaya; and Johor Bahru – Bangkok. Five of these new routes are unique where AirAsia is the sole operator of those routes. Frequencies were added on four routes: Kuala Lumpur – Banda Aceh, Johor Bahru, Phuket and Chongqing.


Thai AirAsia (“TAA”) continued to record a strong load factor of 81% in 3Q15, marginally down by 1 ppt YoY. Number of passengers carried also saw a double digit increase of 26% YoY at 3.58 million, matching the 27% increase in capacity resulting from the improvement in the political situation in Thailand which led to a more favourable performance in the tourism sector. During the quarter under review, TAA took in 1 additional aircraft and comparing YoY, TAA has added 4 aircraft allowing them to end the quarter with a total of 44 aircraft. TAA operated three new routes this quarter: Bangkok – Bengaluru; and Pattaya – Nanchang and Nanning. During the quarter, TAA also launched a new fifth hub at U-tapao International Airport in Pattaya.


Indonesia AirAsia (“IAA”) recorded a load factor of 75% in 3Q15. The number of passengers carried stood at 1.68 million on the back of 4% decrease in capacity as IAA continued with its rationalisation plan which include reduction of capacity and redeployment of aircraft to other short-haul associates. In 3Q15, one aircraft was deregistered from IAA and transferred to MAA as part of the capacity management exercise. At the end of the reported quarter, IAA has a total of 23 aircraft, which includes 3 aircraft on wet lease to Indonesia AirAsia X (“IAAX”). During the quarter, IAA launched one new route: Surabaya – Bangkok. Meanwhile, frequencies on three routes were added: Surabaya – Johor Bahru & Kuala Lumpur; and Bandung – Singapore.


Philippines’ AirAsia (“PAA”) reported significant improvements in load factor at 84% in 3Q15, up 19 ppts YoY. The number of passengers carried was at 0.90 million, an increase of 46% YoY, well ahead of the 14% increase in capacity. No additional aircraft was added into PAA during the reported period hence their fleet size at the end of September remained at 15 aircraft. PAA increased frequency on two routes: Manila – Puerto Princessa and Cebu.


AirAsia India (“AAI”) achieved a load factor of 76% in 3Q15, up 1 ppt YoY with a total of 0.42 million passengers carried, an increase of 225% YoY. Capacity grew by 221% YoY in line with the total passengers carried. AAI’s total fleet at the end of the quarter under review stood at 5 aircraft, YoY increase of 3 aircraft. Frequency was added on one existing route: Bengaluru – Visakhapatnam. AAI’s operating statistics are disclosed and included in the Group’s numbers since 3Q14.

Airasia X Preliminary Operating Statistics For the 3rd Quarter of the Financial Year Ended 2015



In line with the Company’s turnaround initiatives, Available-Seat-KM (“ASK”) has decreased by 9% year-on-year (“y-o-y”) to 5,770 million in 3Q15, on the back of strategic capacity management in the First Half of 2015 to address the issue of irrational competition, especially the Australian segment, and to prevent further losses from routes that have yet to mature. The Revenue-Passenger-KM (“RPK”) recorded 16% decrease y-o-y to 4,333 million, consequently passenger load factor (“PLF”) down by 6% y-o-y to 75% in 3Q15, mainly due to the spillover effect from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak since May 2015 that has took a dip in Korea market as passengers traffic from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul and Busan decreased by 14% Y-o-Y in 3Q15 but returning of traffic is seen from October 2015 onwards after the declaration of MERS-free by end July 2015. The challenging aviation regulation in Indonesia also posted slight drag in Australia’s passenger traffic as uncertainties arises towards AAX Group’s brand in Australia but immediate come-back is seen after the licensing issue resolved by early October 2015. In addition to that, the depreciation of USD:MYR in 3Q15 has set temporary slide in the outbound travel demands to stronger currency markets especially in the end of July to August 2015 when the exchange rate exceeded the 4 dollar marks and reaches the highest at 4.48 in end September 2015, hitting a 17 year low since 1998. AAX strongly believes that the Low Cost sector will prevails in the Malaysian market as local starts to adjust to the currency translation. This is witnessed by the improvement in strong forward bookings from October onwards, signifying return of business in 4Q15.


The company has seen strong recovery for the China segment in 3Q15 with average PLF of 85% despite higher average base fare, signifying the return of Chinese tourists after the aviation incidents in 2014. Japan has also seen improvement following the termination of loss-making Narita in August 2015 with newly launched Sapporo showing promising demand after its maiden flight on 1st October 2015. The Australian segment continued to improve in yields but further improvement in 3Q15 was hindered by the uncertainties arises from the aviation restriction imposed by regulator in Indonesia.


As for fleet movement, the group has a total size of 26 A330s as at 30th September 2015, with 20 based in Malaysia AirAsia X (“MAAX”), 4 based in Thai AirAsia X (“TAAX”) and 2 in Indonesia AirAsia X (“IAAX”). The Company recently took delivery of 1 A330 aircraft in October 2015, to be based in TAAX, bringing the group’s current total fleet size to 27 A330s.


Thai AirAsia X has recorded PLF of 71% in 3Q15 mainly dragged by MERS outbreak in Korea. Despite the setback by the ICAO-driven restrictions, Thai AAX continued to pursue expansion plans to China with first direct service from Bangkok to Shanghai on 28th September 2015. The outlook for TAAX remains positive as Thailand is a natural tourist hub with equally strong inbound and outbound records with Japan, Korea and China as the top outbound destinations. Besides, Thailand is no stranger to turmoil and has historically shown quick rebound and remained unaffected by years of domestic unrest.


IAAX announced in early October 2015 that it has complied with Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation’s regulatory requirement of minimum 10 aircraft ownership. This brings IAAX fleet size to 10 aircraft, of which 8 are A320s and the other 2 are IAAX’s existing A330s. The additional fleet will be operating from Bali, Surabaya and Jakarta, tapping on the existing frequency slots from Indonesia AirAsia. These major trunk routes will benefit the group with high volume feeder traffic and improve Fly-thru connectivity. Aside from that, IAAX has terminated Bali-Taipei on 28th September 2015 and launched Bali-Sydney route with inaugural flight on 17th October 2015. The brand damage caused by Bali-Melbourne disruptions in December 2014 and the uncertainties caused by the regulations on minimum aircraft requirement recently, has diminished in end 3Q15 following brand restoration via marketing campaigns in Australia. Despite the challenging regulatory landscape, the company sees great potential in growing the Bali hub as it offers strong connectivity across ASEAN region from the feeder traffic by AirAsia Group and AAX Group.


As expected, the operating performance for China and Australia market has seen improvement in 3Q15, on the back of aggressive marketing activities and brand campaigns in First Half 2015. The overall performance in 3Q15 is signifying recovery and the PLF is trending upwards to the 80% mark while the company continued to strengthen its core markets, especially Korea and Japan, in Second Half 2015. There will be co-brand campaigns with AirAsia Japan and aggressive marketing collaborations in the both market which will bear fruits moving forward to 4Q15 and into year 2016.

MAHB system’s traffic performance - Oct 2015


Passenger movements at MAHB system of airports (including Istanbul SGIA) grew by 0.1%, registering 9.0 million passenger movements in October 2015 compared to the same month last year. International traffic recorded 4.0 million passengers, a year-on-year decrease of 1.6% while domestic traffic recorded 5.0 million passengers with 1.5% year-on-year increase compared to the same corresponding period in 2014. On a last-twelve-month basis, the total MAHB system (with Istanbul SGIA) registered 4.7% growth with 112 million passengers.


Airports in Malaysia registered 6.5 million passengers for October 2015. International sector recorded 3.1 million passengers, a decrease of 3.6% while domestic traffic declined by 6.8% with 3.3 million passengers. Overall aircraft movements declined by 4.0% with international and domestic movements registering negative 0.3% and 6.0% respectively over October 2014.


KLIA passengers declined by close to 4% in October 2015. KLIA Main Terminal traffic decreased by 19% while klia2 grew by more than 10% partly due to Jetstar Asia’s shift from KLIA Main to klia2.The last twelve months passenger traffic for KLIA Main terminal declined by 8.6% registering above 23 million passengers while klia2 recorded 26 million, an increase of 8.7% over the same corresponding period. Overall aircraft movements at KLIA in October 2015 increased by 1.8% over the same month last year. Domestic and international movements registered 1.6% and 1.9% growth respectively.


Istanbul SGIA continued to register double-digit growth of above 17% for October 2015 over October 2014. The domestic and international sector grew by 23.9% and 6.3% respectively. Overall aircraft movements increased by 18.6%.


Year to date traffic


MAHB’s total system of airports handled 93 million passengers up to October 2015 registering a 5.3% growth over the same corresponding period last year. Domestic and international movements increased by 8.0% and 2.1% respectively. Aircraft movements grew by 7.4% over the same period last year. Airports in Malaysia registered 1.2% growth in passenger movements, while Istanbul SGIA registered 19.3% growth.


Overview of traffic


October traffic decline was due to runway closure and cancellation of flights primarily caused by haze in Malaysia. More than a thousand flights especially for the domestic sector were cancelled. Among the worst affected airports include Langkawi, Subang, Penang, Kota Bharu, Alor Setar, Ipoh and KLIA. Malaysia Airlines which is undergoing restructuring has cut its flights by 14% in October compared to October 2014. Malaysia Airlines is still in a consolidation stage and we foresee these cuts will be filled up by other carriers in the short and medium term. South East Asia sector recorded negative growth in October partly due to the impact from haze. The China sector continued to show improvement. Oceania sector was affected by AirAsia X cuts in frequencies. Istanbul SGIA’s passenger traffic performance remained robust with a double digit growth of 17.1%.

A little notice about Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Second runway has ben planned 5 years ago and now after solving techinal issues, construction offers has been result. New second parallel runway will be 3500mts and allowed to land A380. As you know Pegasus airlines has been ordered more than 100 A320(includes NEO) which will be competed delivery until 2022. Turkish Airlines also adding new routes from Sabiha Gokcen airport day by day. Qatar airways started to fly second daily flight o Gokcen airport. It would be options to other airlines such as Emirates, Saudia or etc. It means passanger counts would be rapidly growing up in ISG.

Malaysia Airports' Passengers Fall To 6.8 Million


KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- Malaysia airports registered 6.8 million passengers, a decrease of 2.7 per cent for November 2015 year-on-year over November 2014.


In a filing to Bursa Malaysia today, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), said international and domestic sectors recorded 3.2 million and 3.6 million passengers, a decline of 1.2 per cent and 3.9 per cent, respectively.


"Overall, aircraft movements decreased by 5.7 per cent with a reduction of international and domestic movements by 3.2 per cent and 7.1 per cent respectively over November 2014.


"The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) passenger movements decreased by 0.9 per cent in November 2015 and the KLIA Main Terminal traffic dropped by 13.7 per cent. The klia2, however, grew by 11 per cent," it said.


MAHB said for the 12 months, passenger traffic for KLIA's Main terminal recorded 22.9 million passengers, a decline of 8.4 per cent, while klia2 recorded 26 million, an increase of nine per cent over the corresponding period, last year.


"November traffic was affected by routes and frequencies cuts by Malaysia Airlines which is undergoing restructuring. This has resulted in a double-digit percentage year-on-year decline in Malaysia Airlines passenger carriage," it said.


MAHB said this trend has occurred more than once, at the onset of each major restructuring initiatives over the last decade.


Meanwhile, it said, AirAsia's traffic improved by close to double-digits and Malindo's by over 20 per cent.


"China Southern, Eva Airways, Vietnam Airlines and Qatar Airways also recorded similar growth while Tiger Airways, Turkish Airlines and Xiamen Airlines registered a growth of over 30 per cent.


"Meanwhile, the overall average load factors recorded for international and domestic sectors were encouraging for November 2015, indicating demand potential for air travel remains resilient," it said.

JHB, AOR, SZB and KBR posted an outstanding double digits growth. By looking trend between Q3 '14 and Q3 '15, I guess KBR will able to reach 2 millions passenger traffic by year end with newcomer Rayani Air although the effect is seems minimal.

All airports in east Malaysia are suffering from drop in passenger volume, except Sibu; while airports in west Malaysia are recording strong performance. What a contrast.

The world’s busiest airport says it has become the first in the world to top a major passenger milestone. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport counted its 100 millionth passenger on Sunday morning, something that the airport says makes it the first airport in the world to ever serve that many passengers in a single calendar year. Atlanta’s airport even went so far as to estimate when the 100 millionth passenger would arrive. Officials tabbed Larry Kendrick – a customer on an arriving Delta flight from Mississippi’s Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport – as the milestone passenger.

Despite a reduction in frequencies by Malaysia Airlines, there were double-digit increase in passengers between KLIA and India, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar and Thailand, while single-digit growth was recorded between KLIA and Saudi Arabia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Cambodia, Vietnam and China.
KLIA aircraft movements grew by 4.0% with international and domestic movements registering a growth of 4.8% and 2.5% respectively. Cargo movements was 734,543 metric tonnes in 2015. A total of 67 airlines operated from KLIA to 133 destinations in 2015.

How do they conclude the final data? Malindo moved into KLIA2 in May 2014, how does it affect the 2015 records?

 

I think KUL will be down by a few positions due to flat growth in 2015.

Singapore’s Changi Airport posts record passenger numbers for 2015

 

Singapore’s Changi Airport reported a new annual record for passenger traffic in 2015, with 55.4 million passengers (up 2.5% on 2014) and more than 346,300 aircraft movements for the 12-month period.

How do they conclude the final data? Malindo moved into KLIA2 in May 2014, how does it affect the 2015 records?

 

I think KUL will be down by a few positions due to flat growth in 2015.

 

Means from Jan-May 2014, there was traffic from Malindo/Lion, adding up to numbers for 2014.

 

In 2015, no more traffic from Malindo/Lion, meaning less numbers vs 2014.

MAHB is lazy, all they needed to do is to reclassify the 2014 numbers of the affected airlines so that the 2015 comparison can be meaningful. Lazy, lazy, lazy!

Can you elaborate? Don't understand the issue?

They have the numbers for the affected airlines for 2014 - all they need to do is shift them from the MTB stats to the klia2 stats and restate the 2014 numbers and label them "adjusted to reflect the move from MTB to klia2". Then the comparison between 2014 and 2015 numbers will be valid and there is no need to guess how much the impact is on the MTB numbers.

Sorry, I still don't get what you are getting at but really want to explain :)

 

Simply put, in 2014, MTB had more airlines serving it than in 2015.

 

Therefore, in 2015, pax numbers for MTB is lower compared to 2014.

 

I think it's pretty straightforward, unless I'm missing something?

AirAsia X passenger traffic falls 9% y-o-y in 4QFY15

 

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 15): AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) saw a 9% fall in its passenger traffic to 0.99 million for the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2015 (4QFY15), from 1.09 million in the previous year, in line with a 10% reduction in capacity to 1.19 million, from 1.33 million last year.
In a statement today, the company said the reduction in capacity was due to its route consolidation exercise, which saw the termination of routes to Narita, Nagoya and Adelaide. Meanwhile, its Colombo and Chongqing routes were shifted to A320 operations from A330 initially.
The capacity from the axed routes was deployed to new unique routes such as Sapporo, underserved routes, charters and wet leasing operations.
The lower capacity resulted in better load factor of 83% for the quarter, compared to 81% in the previous year, despite higher average base fare compared to 4Q14.

AirAsia Group Carried 50.68 Million Passengers In 2015
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- AirAsia Group carried 50.68 million passengers in financial year ended 2015 (FY15), up 11 per cent from 45.58 million passengers in financial year 2014.
In its preliminary operating statistics released Monday, the low-cost airline said its capacity rose nine per cent to 63.34 million versus 58.16 million previously.
"The load factor rose by two percentage points year-on-year (yoy) to 80 per cent," the company said.
It said Malaysia AirAsia (MAA) posted a 10 per cent increase in the number of passengers carried last year to 24.25 million, gained seven per cent in capacity to 30.08 million and added two percentage points in load factor.
As for its units in other countries, AirAsia India saw the number of passengers it carried soared by 324 per cent to 1.46 million in 2015 versus 345,298 in 2014 while capacity increased by 322 per cent to 1.82 million from 430,560 and load factor gained one percentage point yoy to 81 per cent.
However, Indonesia AirAsia recorded a decrease of 17 per cent in the number of passengers carried to 6.52 million last year compared with 7.85 million, capacity down 13 per cent to 8.76 million from 10.04 million and load factor eased four per cent to 74 percentage points yoy.
For the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2015 (4Q15), the load factor increased by five per cent to 83 per cent compared with the same quarter a year ago.
It said the number of passengers carried rose by 12 per cent yoy to 13.5 million, ahead of the six per cent increase in capacity.
"At the end of 2015, the group has a fleet size of 170 aircraft (171 including one aircraft that was delivered to AirAsia Japan in 4Q15, which has not commenced operation)," it said.
It said MAA posted a load factor of 85 per cent in 4Q15, up seven percentage points yoy.
AirAsia said demand exceeded capacity with 10 per cent increase in the number of passengers carried at 6.5 million and one per cent yoy increase in capacity.
"MAA ended the quarter with a total fleet of 80 aircraft. Three new routes commenced operations during the quarter: Kuala Lumpur-Male, Changsha and Colombo. Frequencies were added on three routes: Kuala Lumpur-Kochi and Jakarta; and Johor Baharu-Ho Chi Minh City," it said.
Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia recorded a load factor of 82 per cent in 4Q15, up three per cent percentage points yoy, while Indonesia AirAsia maintained its load factor at 80 per cent, it said.
As for the Philippine AirAsia, it said, its load factor was up by nine per cent to 81 per cent and AirAsia India recorded a load factor of 84 per cent, one per cent better compared with the same period last year.

Here are the November 2015 statistics for KUL-Australia traffic:

 

All markets dropped, though MEL and PER are holding up, as both of these markets are quite strong for Malaysia. MEL and SYD saw significant decreases with MH pulling 1 daily service from both and D7 correcting itself, whilst ADL saw D7 pull out.
