Airports' & Airlines' Operational Statistics

Oh my, the ranking is out!

We are no. 20 in the world in 2013, best ranking for KLIA in history.

  • KLIA is world's top 20 busiest airport.
  • Top 3 highest growths - KLIA (19.1%), Dubai (15.2%) and Ataturk (13.6%)
  • Top 3 highest gainers - KLIA (up 7 ranks), Incheon (up 4 ranks) and Dubai (up 3 ranks).
  • World ranking of ASEAN Big 4 - Soekarno Hatta (10th), Changi (13th), Suvarnabhumi (17th) and KLIA (20th).
  • KLIA is 3,865,294 passengers behind Suvarnabhumi.

KLIA's January 2014 growth rate is 24.2%.

Other interesting note:

  • The ranking of the world's top 6 busiest airports remain the same. However, looking at Dubai's number and growth rate, the status quo is going to be stirred up big time in 2014. My bet would be Dubai to penetrate into no. 3 in 2014, pushing away Heathrow, Haneda, Chicago and Los Angeles.
  • Worst performer - Barajas. Dropped 12.1% and 10 spots.

With MH370 incident, I wonder how it would affect MH load and subsequently KLIA passenger load this year?

Can't be positive, IMO. Some will stay clear of MH for a while. Paranoid ones will also think of KUL as a less-than-secure airport. I don't blame them, really.

There will still be growth, just probably not at the phenomenal rate we saw last year.

KLIA 2014 Passengers Traffic Watch

January - 4,234,803 (+24.2%)

February - 3,864,293 (+16.5%)

YTD TOTAL - 8,099,096 (+20.37%)

February figures brought down the cumulative average growth by 4 points. Notwithstanding that March is expected to be difficult, as at the end of February, an average growth of 20.37%, possibly still the highest in the world amongst the world's top 30 airports.

No, unfortunately. ACI is quite slow in releasing those. Probably we can see one in May the earliest. Their website is still showing the full year 2013 rankings and last update was done on the 17 March.

In 2015 KLIA could be above Changi!

It's only achievable if both airports maintain their respective growth rates. SIN had a modest rate of only 5%, and if that picks up KUL will have a hard time catching up.

I somehow think after the MH370 incident KUL's growth might be negatively affected. Not everyone is as supportive of MH as some of our members here. Hopefully the opening of KLIA2 (if and when that happens) means AirAsia can compensate with more room to expand.

I do not think the Airasia Group will expand @KLIA significantly this year. They have big plans for Thailand and India and most of the new planes will be delivered there. Similarly, a total of four A330s will be sent to Thai and Indonesia Airasia X (two each). D7's expansion at KUL will also be limited.

Vibrant passenger growth sustains to the end of March

MAHB’s airports recorded another vibrant double-digit growth rate of 13% in March, bringing the first three months’ total growth to 18% compared with the same period last year. A new record total of 20.6 million passengers passed through MAHB’s 39 airports in Malaysia, for a single quarter for MAHB. There was broad-based growth in both domestic and international travel, across both KLIA and other airports too.

First Quarter 2014 growth of 15% in International passengers

Int ernat ional p assengers grew 15% year-on-year w hile d om est ic t raf f ic registered a very healthy 22% growth in the first quarter of 2014. All months recorded double-digit increases over same months in 2013. It is patently clear that both foreign airlines and the issuance of a third licence to Malindo, have resulted in the tapping of under-served demand. Globally, such high growth rates at KLIA and MAHB have only been exceeded by MAHB’s current 20%- and soon-to-be 60%-owned Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (Istanbul SGIA), which recorded a massive 40% growth year-on-year to 4.8 million passengers in the first three months of 2014.

Kuala Lumpur International traffic surges another 16% in 1Q2014. Is the growth sustainable?

Malaysia continues to record some of the world’s fastest passenger growth rates, driven by rapid capacity expansion by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia along with the launch of Malindo Air.
Malaysia Airports has recorded 18% passenger growth for 1Q2014, including 16% at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This follows growth of 18% for the full year in 2013, including 19% growth at KLIA, making it the fastest growing major airport in Asia.
The rate of growth is expected to slow down for the remainder of 2014 but remain in the double digits for the full year. The growth over the last year has been spectacular but has come at the expense of airline yields and hence profitability.
Malaysia Airports breaks another record with first quarter traffic figures:

Jet's disappearance cuts Malaysian Airline's load factor in March

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Reuters) - The disappearance of the Malaysian Airline System's flight MH370 has led to a drop in the national airline's overall load factor, a measure of occupancy, in March.

Total load factor declined to 74.1 percent in March from 78.9 percent a year ago, according to monthly traffic and capacity statistics that MAS issued on Friday. The load factor for international passengers declined 6.3 percent year on year.

Expected. Similarly would also see the tourists arrival drops too, mainly from China, not just due to this incident as well as Sabah's kidnap.
