LOL! Anyway, a day after our bitching about MH's slow-ness, the Investor Relation page is suddenly updated right away out of nowhere with statistics for November and December 2010 being uploaded simultaneously. Do they read this thread?

http://malaysiaairlines.listedcompany.com/misc/operational_statistics_Dec2010.pdf

This is how MH fares throughout the year 2010, operational wise:

Passengers carried (Domestic): 4,743,000

Load factor (Domestic): 69.4%

Passengers carried (International): 8,369,000

Load factor (International): 77.1%

Passengers carried (Cumulative): 13,112,000

Load factor (Cumulative): 76.2%

.

.

.

Here is the comparison of MH vs AK on their comparable operational statistics for the period 1 January - 31 December 2010:

Total Passengers Carried in 2010

MH - 13,112,000

AK - 16,054,738

AK carried 2,942,738 more passengers than MH in the year 2010. Cumulatively, both airlines carried 29,166,738 passengers, showing a good sign for Malaysian airlines.

Average Load Factor in 2010

MH - 76.2%

AK - 77.87%

AK's load factor is better than MH by 1.67 ppt

Growth from Previous Corresponding Period

MH - 9.7%

AK - 12.64%

AK recorded better growth than MH by 2.94 ppt. However, the fact that both airlines are growing (strongly) from their 2009's achievements is commendable.

No. of Aircrafts

MH - Fleet status was not updated since 31 July 2010!

AK - 53 aircrafts

No fair comparison could be made because of MH's obsolete information placed on their Investor Relation page.

Conclusion: Operational wise, AK towers in all comparable statistics over MH throughout the year 2010.

Notes:

KUL's figures in December 2010 break all the previous records - highest number of domestic passengers in a month ever, more than 1 million domestic passengers handled in a month for the first time ever in history, highest number of international passengers handled in a month ever, the first time KUL handled more than 3 million passengers (domestic + international) in a month ever in the history of our country.

.

.

.

KLIA'S FINAL YEAR END 2010 STATISTICS:

Total passengers handled - 34,087,636 passengers (up 14.8% from 29,682,093 in 2009). Breakdown of passengers - 23,771,375 international (+20.8%) + 10,316,261 domestic (+3.2%). This is also the first time ever in the history of our country that KUL handled more than 10 million domestic passengers in a year.

Cargo handled - 674,901,790 kg (up 15.5% from 584,558,967 kg in 2009)

How can we get the actual passengers destination for domestic?

eg. KCH 1.6M, BKI 1.6M, PEN 1.6M passengers

As for international, there is a list at MAHB annual report :pardon:

That would be from MAHB Annual Report. The figures for all airports including the STOLs in Sabah and Sarawak but with the exception of JHB (which is privately owned) can be obtained from there. We could expect the 2010 annual report to be published by June this year, hopefully earlier.

Here is a recap of 2009's performance:

MAHB's 2009 Annual Report is out and here are some of the interesting statistics that I would like to share:

http://www.malaysiaairports.com.my/view.php?dbIndex=0&&website_id=129&&id=1425

KUL handled 29,682,093 passengers movement in 2009, up 7.8% from 27,529,355 in 2008. We can expect KUL to break into the 30 million+ passengers category this year. Suvarnabhumi and Changi are not that far from reach, but caution about Soekarno-Hatta. Nevertheless bravo!

Malaysia's busiest airports by passengers movement (more than 1 million passengers) [except JHB which is privately owned]:

1. KUL - 29,682,093 (+ 7.8%)

2. BKI - 4,868,526 (+ 3.8%)

3. KCH - 3,574,632 (+ 10.4%)

4. PEN - 3,325,423 (- 2.4%)

5. MYY - 1,620,345 (+ 5.4%)

6. LGK - 1,359,271 (+ 13.6%)

7. KBR - 1,003,162 (+ 20.0%)

Despite many complaints by KCH based MW members about nobody wanted to fly into their airport, airlines are cutting or terminating service there etc, the numbers surprisingly proved otherwise. KCH overtook PEN back as Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport with a double digit growth. KBR was a total shocker to break through into the 1 million+ category. Kelate boleh sokmo!

There are also 3 airports, which is all set to break into the 1 million+ category in 2010, if they can maintain their growth:

1. SBW - 939,732 (+ 13.0%)

2. TWU - 866,601 (+ 12.7%)

3. SZB - 819,840 (+ 166.4%)

Two (2) airports recorded an extraordinary growth, IPH (308.1%) and SZB (166.4%) but these numbers are expected due to the emergence of these 2 airports as FireFly's key destinations. The airport which recorded the highest growth under normal circumstances is AOR (+ 37.0%) while MKZ is the worst performer (- 21.8%).

BKI is Malaysia's busiest airport for domestic transfer passengers while KUL of course, for international transfer passengers.

Now that KUL has broken into the 30 million+ category, does BKI manages to break into the 5 million+ category too? And how about the ever competitive battle between KCH and PEN to clinch the title of Malaysia's 3rd busiest airport? Can KBR number gets any higher after breaking into the 1 million+ category last year? And will SBW, TWU and SZB join in the 1 million+ category club this year? So many information to look forward to!

The growth number is especially interesting. International passengers rose 20.8% year on year, that's a huge increase. This is my prediction/speculation of the catalysts of this development in the order of highly likely:

1. AK continues to soar on the international segment and could probably overtaking MH as the largest international airline in KUL for the very first time ever in history.

2. D7's passenger numbers come to full potential level.

3. The extra harvest by foreign airlines in KUL, particularly Emirates and Silk Air.

4. MH manages to gain back some lost market shares from previous years.

erm, sorry if my question is not clear... haha :pardon:

I am saying domestic route from KUL

like KUL-KCH-KUL , KUL-BKI-KUL and KUL-PEN-KUL occupied almost 1.6M passengers at Year 2007 or 2008 for tat FLY KUL program.

Other than that, I cant see any report saying the figures anymore.

* I found the pdf file from my laptop and some of KUL domestic destination are:

Kota Kinabalu 1,639,431

Kuching 1,501,766

Penang 1,333,517

Langkawi 967,335

There are just these airports as MAHB just release these 4 airports top 10 destination ( for 2007 ), and i am really looking forward the figures for the year after 2007 especially this year which domestic passenger >10M while KK KCH PEN almost have 50% of the passenger

I see. Actually, I never see a formal report from MAHB or any investment banks/houses which listed out the number of passengers by routes, but I am very sure MAHB has this data. Hopefully they'll reveal it in some ways in their 2010 Annual Report. Could be interesting to see which (domestic) routes are the supreme ones in KUL.

An excerpt of an investment bank report.

Otherwise 2010 was a fantastic year. 2010 was filled with milestones:

(1) MAHB’s absolute traffic growth of 6.5m was significantly higher than its previous record of 5.3m achieved in 2004;

(2) KLIA carried 34.1m passengers (14.8% YoY), it is the fourth fastest growing airport in the world and we estimate it is now the 32nd busiest airport, an 8 spot jump from its 2009 ranking; and

(3) the company issued RM2.5b of long dated (average 11.2 years) sukuk at an aggregate yield of 4.63% which is very attractive at only 84 basis points above the MGS benchmark.

KLIA graduates to becoming a “big” airport.

2010 was a milestone for KLIA as it graduated to becoming a “big” airport (defined as carrying >30m pax per year). KLIA carried 34.1m passengers in 2010, we estimate this makes it the 32nd busiest airport in the world surpassing big names such as Narita Japan and Newark USA. More impressively, KLIA’s growth of 14.8% makes it the fourth fastest growing large airport after Pudong, Jakarta and Dubai.

We believe, international airlines will be “obliged” to serve KLIA in the near future as it is a major handicap not having a big international hub gateway – i.e KLIA, in their network. Among the possible new entrants are Turkish Airways, Air New Zealand, Kingfisher and Qantas/JetStar).

Although we might only end up on the 32nd place at the world ranking as the report claims, the fact that KUL is the world's 4th fastest growing airport is an extremely huge achievement. Will wait patiently for ACI to release the final year end 2010 ranking. The firm's prediction of the possible new entrants into KUL is very interesting.

For 2011, MAHB expected a growth of 8% from the total number of passengers it handled in 2010 in all 45 airports in Malaysia its managing. MAHB handled 57,829,465 passengers in all airports in Malaysia (except JHB) in 2010. Therefore for 2011, MAHB is expecting to handled (1.08 x 57,829,465) = 62,455,822 passengers.

Based on 2010's ratio, KUL traffic forms 58.95% of MAHB overall annual traffic. Therefore, it could be concluded that MAHB predicted KUL to handle some 36,817,707 passengers in 2011. However, I think, should KUL can maintain its spectacular 14.8% growth like what achieved in 2010, we can expect KUL's number to reach 39,132,606 passengers this year. I am even confident to bet that KUL will surpass 40 million passengers in 2011.

My concern about the high growth of international traffic in KUL in 2010 was also somewhat being explained in brief in the report.

Growing international appeal

Malaysia’s passenger make-up is increasingly international-biased with 48.4% in 2010. This is a big jump of 3.5 ppt from the previous year. The factors leading to this strong growth are;

(1) the recovery in air travel, which has helped to drive more business and leisure related travels;

(2) the launch of new international flights by AirAsia and AirAsia X; and

(3) the commencement of services to Malaysia by four airlines (Oman Air, Mahan Air, Shanghai Airlines and Wings Air).

So it simply confirms all my prediction points, except point (4). MH does not gain any significant international market shares in KUL in 2010.

Does anybody know when MAS' full financial results for 2010 will be released?

I am sceptical how much more pax that the AirAsia group airlines can contribute to growth in 2011. In 2010, the LCCT handled 2m pax over its designed capacity. As such, any further growth is limited by its capability to handle more flights and pax. Unless MAHB has any plans to increase the LCCT capacity, significant KLIA traffic growth will most likely have to come from airlines using the MTB.

Since 1998, pax volume at MTB has been pretty flat.

A solution for AK to increase capacity at LCCT is for FD and QZ to operate more Thai and Indon flights respectively.

Does anybody know when MAS' full financial results for 2010 will be released?

When I created this thread, the intention is just to discuss on operational statistics. This is because historically in this forum, whenever the airlines announced its quarterly/full year financial results, it will be followed by some lengthy discussion thus it commands a separate thread of its own. I wish to have it stays that way.

With regards to the announcement of the full year 2010 results, I guess it could be somewhere in March or April. That is the normal period for companies whose financial year ended in December to release their results. Now is the super busy time for the Finance Department with reconciliations, consolidations, audits, BOD meetings etc. And rest assured, AK will release their results first, earlier than MH.

Sorry as I still have no Photoshop at the moment to create the chart like usual. Since we have known the full year figures and ranking for KLIA, where our airport did not managed to break into the Top 30 list at all throughout the entire year of 2010, here are some notes to share nonetheless:

  • Soekarno-Hatta maintains its lead over Suvarnabhumi for the 6th consecutive months but its margin over Suvarnabhumi slightly decreased to 1,154,496 passengers in November (vs 1,279,484 passengers margin in October) hence continues retaining its newly clinched title as South East Asia's busiest airport.
  • Soekarno-Hatta's margin with Schiphol improved to 2,248,422 passengers in November (vs 2,429,600 passengers in October) short of overtaking its former colonialist's primary airport. Both airports are at world ranking no. 15 and 16 respectively.
  • Changi improves its ranking by overtaking Pudong and Baiyun and is now at world ranking no. 18, directly behind Soekarno-Hatta and Suvarnabhumi. All 3 busiest airports in South East Asia in the Top 30 list are neck to neck at world ranking no. 16, 17 and 18 respectively with an average of 38.7 million passengers.
  • As we all know, KLIA did not make it into the top 30 list. KLIA handled 30,713,819 passengers from January to November 2010, some 1,165,275 passengers less than Orlando Sanford at no. 30 in the ranking. However, November 2010 is a monumental period to KLIA as it was the month where KLIA first breaks into the 30 million+ club for the very first time ever in the history of Malaysia.
  • The margin between KLIA and Changi worsening to 7,261,084 passengers in November (vs 6,573,025 passengers in October). And as we all already know, the year end figure further worsen to close to 8 million passengers.

We should expect ACI to release the year-to-date figures until December 2010 in a month from now.

From flee's link to AK's pdf presentation to analysts when announcing their historic 2010 result, in page 14, AK revealed a bit of their achieved market shares in 2010.

- Increasing domestic market share of 58% in 2010

- International market share of 37% in 2010

As at the end of 2009, AK's market shares are as follows:

10 LARGEST AIRLINES IN KUL (INTERNATIONAL SECTOR)

2009

Top10Int.jpg

While on the domestic front:

2009

Domestic.jpg

Domestic market share in 2009 is 5,588,493/(4,407,339 + 5,588,493) = 55.9%

So, it is very highly likely now that AK's market shares in KUL up by 2.1% and MH's market share down to only 42% from 44.1% in 2009.

As for international market shares, if AK controlled 37% of the pie, then it is official that AK has overtook MH as the largest international airline in KUL for the very first time in history. A jump from 25.5% to 37% is quite a leap.

To confirm, we need to wait for MAHB annual report 2010 to be released first.

Thai Airasia dont have 0.0

FD only carried 266,452 passengers in KLIA in 2009. That number is not enough for them to be in the top 10 ranking.

LCCTTraffic2009.jpg

.

.

.

The following is some interesting statistics from MAHB 2010's presentation to analysts:

KLIA Passenger Traffic 2010

Domestic

MTB - 4.3 million passengers (-1.5%)

LCCT - 6 million pasengers (+6.9%)

TOTAL - 10.3 million passengers (+3.2%)

International

MTB - 14.4 million passengers (+14.4%)

LCCT - 9.4 million passengers (+25%)

TOTAL - 23.8 million passengers (+20.8%)

Total passengers in 2010 = 34.1 million passengers (+14.8%)

Lots of pointers from that information alone:

- For domestic market, since we only have 2 airlines operating at a different terminal exclusively, it is now confirmed that MH's domestic market share is further shrinking. AK is now controlling 58.3% (6/10.3) of domestic market share in KLIA, while MH is left with 41.7% (4.3/10.3) of the pie. The market share number is in line with the information that AK made available to the analysts as per reply #161.

- There is not too much data that can be deciphered from the international traffic information at MTB because the terminal is shared by 48 airlines operating in KLIA but the growth number (+14.4%) is very impressive. Since MH is the leader of international market share at MTB, most of the growth could be theirs.

- At the LCCT on the other hand, since the terminal is occupied 97.22% by AirAsia group of airlines (AK, FD, QZ and D7) [based on 2009's rate], we could easily conclude that almost the entire 25% growth at the terminal belongs to them and that 9.1 million out of the 9.4 million international passengers at the terminal belongs to them as well. The remaining 300,000 passengers is shared between Tiger Airways and Cebu Pacific, which is a reasonable number.

- The combined (domestic + international) passengers at MTB is (4.3 + 14.4) 18.7 million. It is a generally accepted fact that the MTB + its Satellite is built to handle 25 million passengers per annum. Therefore, in 2010, the MTB utilisation rate is (18.7/25) 74.8%. So, we shouldn't be expecting the Satellite B to be constructed anytime soon.

- The combined (domestic + international) passengers at the LCCT on the other hand is (6 + 9.4) 15.4 million, which is over the designed capacity of the terminal (15 million passengers per annum). And since KLIA2 will not be completed by October 2012, throughout the whole year of 2011 and probably 2012 too, the terminal will experience a further deteriorating state of overcapacity.

- The MTB handled 18.7 million passengers in 2010 versus 16,546,524 passengers in 2009. The growth is 13%.

- While at the LCCT, the terminal handled 15.4 million passengers in 2010 versus 13,135,569 passengers in 2009. The growth is 17.56%. We could conclude that KLIA's growth is mainly driven by the LCCT.

- If both terminals could maintain their growth numbers, the passengers traffic in KLIA in 2011 could be:

MTB - 21.13 million (18.7 x 1.13)

LCCT - 18.1 million (15.4 x 1.1756)

Total - 39.23 million passengers.

I really believe that KLIA can reach 40 million passengers by the end of 2011.

- The ratio of passengers between MTB:LCCT in 2010 is 54.84:45.16 and 55.75:44.25 in 2009. The LCC market slightly increased its market share from 44.25% in 2009 to 45.16% in 2010. In general, the LCC market in KLIA is still around 45% from the total annual passengers travelling through the airport.

.

.

On page 34 of the presentation, there is a list of top 5 duty free items ranked by their sales. Amongst Malaysians, the ranking is as follows:

1. Liquor - 40%

2. Cigarette - 27%

3. Confectionery - 16%

4. High Fashion for Men - 7%

5. Perfume & Cosmetic - 5%

Malaysian customers spent an average of RM 145 for duty free shopping in KLIA. I was kinda surprised with the manly dominating items until...

.

.

On page 36, there is a gender demographic information. Apparently, 65% of passengers at the MTB are male. At the LCCT, the male consists of 63% of the total passengers. Passengers at the LCCT are slightly younger too with 75% of the passengers are 44 years old and below. Malaysian passengers traveled leisurely the most, accounting for 53% of the passengers in MTB and 60% in LCCT. No wonder. Men rules at the airport LOL.

ACI has just released the ranking of the world's top 30 busiest airports for the first 5 months of 2010, as follows:

ACIMay2010.jpg

Although there is not much changes from the April 2010 ranking, here are some notes to share:

  • In April and May 2010, most of the European airports (LHR, CDG, AMS) recorded a decline in passengers movement as compared to the previous year's number in response to the Icelandic volcanic ash incident.
  • Suvarnabhumi maintained its position as South East Asia's busiest airport with 18.1 million passengers from Jan - May 2010.
  • The gap between Soekarno-Hatta and Changi further widening. Soekarno-Hatta is now 363,694 passengers ahead of Changi.

Dear Ramli,

I was told that you're a genius statistician and I was hoping that you might have the most current and comprehensive data on KLIA with respect to -traffic trends -mix of passengers to share with me. Also, do you have the latest chart (2011) on Top 30 busiest airport in the world by ACI. Thank you so much for your help. For your info, I am doing a research project for my boss... thanks so much again.. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

From flee's link to AK's pdf presentation to analysts when announcing their historic 2010 result, in page 14, AK revealed a bit of their achieved market shares in 2010.

As at the end of 2009, AK's market shares are as follows:

Domestic market share in 2009 is 5,588,493/(4,407,339 + 5,588,493) = 55.9%

So, it is very highly likely now that AK's market shares in KUL up by 2.1% and MH's market share down to only 42% from 44.1% in 2009.

As for international market shares, if AK controlled 37% of the pie, then it is official that AK has overtook MH as the largest international airline in KUL for the very first time in history. A jump from 25.5% to 37% is quite a leap.

To confirm, we need to wait for MAHB annual report 2010 to be released first.

Let's do a little analysis, shall we?

Summary for 2010:

2010 saw...

  • A healthy and bullish year for air travel. Only 2 of the world's top 30 busiest airports recorded a decline in passenger numbers (Heathrow and McCarran) but the % numbers are so tiny, it's negligible.
  • Beijing Capital reaffirmed its position as the future busiest airport in the world with a double digit growth against a single digit recorded by the all time champion, Atlanta Hartsfield. Beijing Capital also narrowed down its margin with Atlanta Hartsfield to 15.4 million passengers in 2010 from 23.1 million passengers in 2009.
  • 2 airports made an amazing breakthrough in the top 30 list - Pudong and Soekarno-Hatta. Both airports recorded a growth of passengers number of 27.2% and 18.4% respectively and climbed up the chart at an eyebrow raising pace.
  • Other airports that recorded commendable double digit growth are Hong Kong (10.6%), Dubai (15%), our dearest Changi (13%), Baiyun (10.6%) and Charlotte Douglas (10.4%).
  • A repeat of 2009's feat, ASEAN region had 3 representatives in the top 30 list and further improved the total passengers handled and its world rankings. 2010 saw Soekarno-Hatta, Suvarnabhumi and Changi neck to neck at world ranking no. 16, 17 and 18 respectively. The 3 ASEAN airports handled a combined of 128,804,766 passengers. It is just too bad that KLIA could not join the party!
  • 2010 is a big year for Soekarno-Hatta as it marks the airport's arrival as South East Asia's busiest airport overtaking long standing frontrunner - Suvarnabhumi. Soekarno-Hatta ended the 2010's race with a lead of 1,196,055 passengers over Suvarnabhumi.
  • Amongst the top ASEAN airports inclusive of KLIA, Suvarnabhumi recorded a very underwhelming growth of only 5.6% in 2010 against Soekarno-Hatta (18.4%), Changi (13%) and KLIA (14.8%).
  • Although our very own KLIA is not making the top 30 list, its remarkable achievements in 2010 are undisputed. KLIA handled 34,087,636 passengers throughout the whole year of 2010, only 633,969 passengers less than Munich at no. 30 in the ranking. As stated by Maybank Investment Bank in their latest report about MAHB, KLIA is at ranking no. 32 in 2010 list. This is a huge jump from ranking no. 40 we recorded in 2009.
  • The margin between KLIA and Changi stood up at 7,951,141 passengers in 2010 (vs 7.5 million passengers in 2009). The plan to topple Changi as South East Asia's 3rd busiest airport is by no mean an easy task.

What we should expect in 2011?

Seeing KLIA to finally make an appearance in the top 30 list is the big fat agenda. January 2011 ranking is due in mid April 2011.

In addition to the number of passengers handled, airports operation is also measured by the number of cargo and aircraft movements its handled. Here are the top 30 list of these categories:

30 ATLANTA GA, US (ATL) 659 129 17.1

Airports participating in the ACI Monthly Traffic Statistics Collection. Results are preliminary.

Some notes:

  • KLIA is the world's 28th busiest airport with regards to cargo handling. KLIA also recorded a commendable growth of 15.6%. The total tonnage of 697,015 tonne handled in 2010 is the best ever achieved by KLIA in the history of our country.
  • Hong Kong is the world's busiest cargo hub handling more than 4 million tonne of cargo. By comparison, KLIA's total cargo throughput is only 17% than that of Hong Kong.
  • Both Changi and Suvarnabhumi also handled more than 1 million tonne of cargo. KLIA is 613,131 tonne less than Suvarnabhumi, which mean KLIA basically need to double its cargo capacity to match Suvarnabhumi. Taking on Changi would require even more hard works.

Asia is very much a young/new market for aircraft movement category. Only 2 Asian airports made the top 30 - Beijing Capital and Haneda. An airport need to handle at least 340,000 aircrafts movement in a year to make it on this list. By comparison, KLIA only handled 244,179 aircraft movements in 2010, almost 100,000 aircraft movements less than the very least requirement.
