Many pax from KUL are catching flights from BKK or SIN if they do not fancy flying on MH from KUL-SYD. • Soekarno-Hatta maintains its lead over Suvarnabhumi for the second consecutive months by 730,683 passengers margin and retaining its newly clinched title as South East Asia's busiest airport.
  
• Soekarno-Hatta, Suvarnabhumi and Changi are neck to neck at world ranking no. 16, 17 and 18 respectively. All 3 airports handled an average of 24 million passengers during the period.
  
• KLIA is still unable to make it into the top 30 list. KLIA handled 19,273,308 passengers from January to July 2010, some 504,204 passengers less than Narita at no. 30 in the ranking.
  
• The margin between KLIA and Changi increases to 4,635,538 passengers.

Changi Airport in Singapore has broken its yearly record by handling 40 million passenger movements in 2010.

 

From January to November 2010, the airport handled 38 million passengers, an increase of 13.8% compared with the same period in 2009.

 

In November, Changi Airport's passenger traffic increased 7.7% to 3.62 million, compared with the same period in 2009.

 

Passenger growth at Changi Airport in 2010 has been driven by traffic to and from Southeast and Northeast Asia.

 

During the first 11 months in 2010, demand for full service carriers increased 8.8% at the airport, while demand for low-cost carriers rose 35.3%.

Though I hate to say this, but congrats anyway to Changi for breaking into the 40 million club.

 

Yes, KUL will definitely records more than 30 million passengers this year. As at October 2010, the number is 27,778,798 passengers. Even using a very conservative assumption that KLIA will only record 2.9 million passengers per month in November and December 2010, the year end 2010 figure will be 33,578,798 passengers. Rest assured KLIA will record something in the 33+ million this year as I predicted earlier.

SEPANG, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports handled 34.3 million passengers last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), an increase of about 14.8 per cent from the 29.1 million passengers recorded in 2009.

 

Its senior general manager operations services Datuk Azmi Murad said, the growth was almost double from what the airport operator anticipated for the year, which was about eight per cent.

 

"We saw an increase in terms of frequency from airlines that are operating to KLIA, particularly from the Middle East," Azmi added. He was speaking to reporters after receiving Garuda Indonesia's new Boeing 737-800 aircraft for its operations to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, here. Azmi noted that Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways had increased their frequency to Malaysia throughout last year.

 

At the same time, low cost carrier AirAsia and Air Asia X had also contributed to the strong growth. "AirAsia X is connecting passengers from Australia to the Low Cost Terminal before transferring them to Europe," he explained.

 

On another note, Azmi said the improved global economic weather was also contributing to the growth in passengers at the KLIA. KLIA in 2006 was ranked the 13th busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic.

 

As for this year, he said Malaysia Airports was targeting about a seven per cent growth in passengers handling. "This year, we already have one new airline, Firefly Jet. Today, the airline began operations from here with two flights to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu respectively. This is going to be quite positive for us. We expect to see a good number of passengers using Firefly," he added.

 

Commenting on Garuda Indonesia using the bigger Boeing 737-800 new geneation aircraft for its operations to Kuala Lumpur from today, Azmi said, "It is also going to contribute to the increase in passengers from the republic." According to Malaysia Airports, it processed a total of 3,896,054 passengers from Indonesia last year, an increase of 7.3 per cent from 2009. Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia's vice president marketing, Don Jusuf Palito Bustan said, the new aircraft which would increase load capacity up to 40 per cent, would significantly multiply the number of passengers travelling on this high demand route. "The market potential market is still open to us.We see the traffic as being good. That is why we are using the new aircraft," he added. Don Jusuf also said that the Indonesian flagship carrier was preparing itself to leverage on Asean's Open Sky Policy, which comes into effect in 2015. "We not only plan to increase the frequency but also the destinations such as from Jakarta to Penang or Medan to Kuala Lumpur," he added. According to him, the people from Medan always flew to Penang to seek medical treatment using other airlines to get to the island. Besides using the bigger aircraft, Garuda Indonesia is also increasing its frequency from Jakarta to twice daily -vice versa - from thrice a week, previously.

Malaysia Airports handled 34.3 million passengers last year at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), an increase of about 14.8 per cent from the 29.1 million passengers recorded in 2009.

The journalist made a calculation and factual errors. KLIA's growth is not 14.8% and KLIA handled 29.7 million passengers in 2009. Therefore the correct % of growth is [(34.3-29.7)/29.7] = 15.48%

 

In 2010, KLIA increased its passengers number by 4.6 million passengers. If KLIA is to record the same growth in 2011, we could expect KLIA to record (34.3 x 1.1548) = 39.61 million passengers in 2011! If I were MAHB, I would definitely set the target for KLIA to reach 40 million passengers by the end of this year.

 

Looking at the numbers, I think KLIA's future is very promising. CGK, BKK and SIN are not that far away. And this is before the completion of KLIA2.

 

And I hope there would be no more conspiracy to halt the growth of AirAsia X. We will just hurt ourselves by doing so.

The current LCCT is capable of handling up to 15 million passengers per annum, and last year it handled about 17 million passengers, the minister told reporters during a ceremony here today to mark the handing over the Flight Inspection System (FIS) by Systematic Aviation Services Sdn Bhd to his ministry.

 

Considering the exponential traffic growth in the low cost sector, the government has prioritised the immediate development of a mega low cost terminal worth RM2 billion that would meet the low cost travel needs for at least the next 10 to 15 years.

 

In the last 10 years low cost travel at KLIA has grown at an average of 37 per cent per anum.
