New Mukah Airport

RM200m federal grant for Mukah airport

MUKAH: Mukah will get a new airport as part of a long-term plan to develop its infrastrucure.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the Federal Government had approved the project and given a RM200mil grant to initiate the airport.

He was speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony for a new state administrative centre here that will house the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) headquarters.

Taib said the airport, which would accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft, would be built by Juara Cahaya Sdn Bhd, a bumiputra building and civil engineering contractor.

.......

Would it be safe to assume very good loads on the Twin Otter flights nowadays ?

Meaning, 150 seater 737 flights are now doable, provided airport available lah ?!

I wonder if MH or AK will trip over themselves scrambling to service the place :)

I don't think MASwings would be able to fill an ATR72 let alone a MAS 737!

Doesn't it make more sense to use the money to improve the road condition between Mukah/Sibu and Mukah/Bintulu? Sibu is a mere 42 miles (68km) from Mukah but the journey takes 3hrs - thats not even 15mph.

How many white elephants do we need in this country in order to get a place in Guinness World Record?

I agree! I had to take the road to Sibu when my flight was canceled, it was a wild and crazy trip! The road was in such a bad condition.

I also agree with you,as the current Sibu-Mukah road was still under construction.I've went to Mukah with my cousin last year, and the trip was terrible!Luckily i don't throw up during the entire return trip.

New Mukah Airport,eh? Thinking about that since Mukah already had a Polytechnic,so the students could fly out from Mukah without going to the Sibu.

Ah... more place for 'spotting' :)

lets see, there'll be a B738, a A320, a ATR72 and of course the ever reliable the Twin Otter....and as for the traffic, 2x MH per day, 2x AK per day, 4x MW...hmmm interesting traffic.... :p and occasionally 9M-ATM or Batavia or SilkAir or.......

as for the road from Sibu-Mukah, CMS should do more about it, after all Mukah is Taib constituency and Mukah is within SCORE area. not only Mukah-Sibu road, in fact the whole Trans-Borneo stretch should be upgrade.

Yep, the reason why the airport will be built :finger:

Why do they need road from Sibu to Mukah? When they may extend the runway to link Mukah and Sibu airports in the next phase

Wonder which airport in Sawarak will be renamed to Queen Laila Airport? :pardon:

Ah, now it makes sense.

Now I know why there are no new airports being built in Kapit, Long Pasia, Semporna and Tommangong...

1. For students, cheaper take Sibu-Mukah ferry.

2. As for spotting, better the kampung-like atmosphere at the current airport. Friendly staff mean it is easier to request apron entrace for photo shoot.

3. Refer to Radzi's comment. Its all about 'Cahaya'

Actually even the current Mukah Airport can cater the Citation X, the CM himself was onboard and flew to Mukah on his Cit10 when his late mum was terminally ill few years back.. and the best part of it was it landed at night.. but wait a minute, the airstrip had no lightings.!! So what the airport did was lined up quite a distance some lights on the runway for the plane to visually see the runway.. This story was told to Nick and Me during our visit to mukah tower years back by the atc controller.. how true i dunnolah :pardon:

The development in Sarawak makes little sense. It seems like most of the money goes into Mukah. The development is way out of proportion compare with the rest of the state, some need just basic roads.

Mukah sees rapid development over the recent years because it's Taib's area.

It doesn't need a new airport for 737. It's still a small town with Sibu nearby.

Actually the current airport is relatively new (at least the building). When they build the new terminal building, there were talks like the runway could be easily extended if needed.
