Want to be technical , we can also say that technically it is not a Boeing 747 .... There is Air Force One , Marine One , la la la , They refer to Marine One as the Vehicle more often than the call sign . More often than not , people just assume that that aircraft is called Air Force One , only av. geeks and people in the know will have any sort of clue what it actually means .. FYI, the Air Force refers to the plane as SAM (Special Air Mission) 28000 or 29000 if the president's not on the plane. I've read that when the new president is sworn in, if the old one is in the air on AF1, they actually change callsign midflight. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The A-model (VC-25A) is the only variant of the VC-25. The VC-25 is most famous for its role as Air Force One, the callsign of any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States. The two aircraft currently in U.S. service are highly modified versions of Boeing's 747-200B, with tail numbers 28000 and 29000. Although the Air Force One designation technically applies to the planes only while the President is aboard, the term is commonly applied to the VC-25s more generally. They often operate in conjunction with Marine One, the helicopter which ferries the President to airports in circumstances where a vehicle motorcade would be inappropriate. Azuddin 1 Report post Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) The aircraft is known in USAF spec as VC-25. It's a common 747-200 referred to as SAM. No doubt that most people refer it as Air Force One because that is the common purpose. Even if you buy the model by Hogan, Herpa and Skymarks, they mark the name on the box as Air Force One instead of VC-25 or SAM. Should watch the movie Air Force One which played by Harrison Ford. Even though it's not real, but it clearly show the call sign and even any other kind of plane that the president boarded will change callsign to AF1. As example in the movie, after the president got transfer into a C-130 in midair, the C-130 which callsign was Liberty 24 change callsign to Air Force 1.
