KLIA2 - New Mega Low Cost Carriers Terminal

Recommended Posts

Does KLIA really need a 3rd runway now ?

I think that currently there are queues for planes taking off in the mornings and evenings. So it is slightly congested (maybe 10-20 mins waiting time for takeoffs) during those times. For an LCC like AirAsia, that is precious fuel burnt up sitting in the queue. So this extra runway will save some taxi and waiting time for aircraft operating from the LCCT.

LHR, SIN, BKK, HKG, etc have two runways and many more flights than KUL. Until KUL movement is double of current, it is hardly justified.

If budget is available for the 3rd runway, why not relocate for new LCCT aerobridge?

one of the major reasons why KLIA have few aircraft quenes during the morning peak is that KLIA only uses one runway for landing and the other for take-offs - unlike Changi which 2 active runways are used for noth landings n take-offs.

That's the reason i posed the question of 3rd runway at KLIA. Just hope we are not building more white elephants while we already have many.

KLIA needs better air traffic controlling rather than a third runway, some would say although to be fair it has improve somewhat recently.

does the statement referring to personnel or equipment? personally, KLIA does not even need both. at the moment KLIA needs more airline flying in rather than better that, better this. at the moment, it is under utilise in every aspects.

I think the 3rd runway is resulted from the final location of the new LCCT. I think if the new LCCT was to be constructed at the original location i.e. right opposite the Main Terminal Building, the construction of a 3rd runway can be avoided.

But all too late now. Everything has been decided.

Pilots will ask for better quality controlling. ATC will ask for better equipments. Spotters will ask for more airlines.

And "somebody" will ask for more projects. Too bad this will result in the government asking for more money, and all us us will pay the price.

I'm sure some spanish air controllers would be looking for jobs soon:

but one question did pop up when i saw this news, is it necesary for the 3rd runway to be built? <img src="http://www.malaysianwings.net/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unknw.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":unknw:" border="0" alt="unknw.gif" />

Well AirAsia burns alot fuel when they taxi their aircraft from LCCT to the active runaway. By this the 3rd runaway will be built close to the new LCCT for faster take off and landing procedures. Plus with AirAsia's 100 Airbus on the way, its a certain to avoid heavy traffics on the runaways. Another reason will be is runaway 14L/32R will be far for the new LCCT for its depature and landings

They shouldn't have built KLIA so far away. Because we also burn a lot of fuel just getting to the airport...

Yeah.... We could have SZB ala KLIA only if the decision makers controlled the surroundings of SZB like KLIA. i.e. No Tropicana, Saujana ,....etc.

Lets hope that we shall not make such errors at KLIA , otherwise another airport for KUL by 2050?

Is that the final design? From my understanding there are 5 companies, which have been shortlisted to get the terminal construction tender (UEM-Bina Puri joint venture, Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd, the privately-held AHT Norlan-Carriage joint venture, IJM Corp Bhd and the Gadang Holdings-PPC joint venture are the frontrunners to win the tender as quoted by Business Times). So I guess the design above belongs to one of the 5 contenders? It looks very much like the rejected Veritas design.

The package consists of construction of a main terminal building and a satellite tower. The price for the job was between RM750 million and RM850 million for the main terminal building, and around RM400 million to RM500 million for the satellite tower.

The drawings seem like for construction?

From pax movement point of view, the building layout is almost perfect except lack of aerobridge but the short walk from boarding gate to aircraft is a big plus compared with current LCCT. However, AK ground staffs need to shutter between gates, employ more ground staffs and expect the boarding gate to close promptly.

Combining MTB with CP is an improvement over current terminal, space saving and shorter walking distance from kerb side to aerobridge :good:

On green technology, tons of heat is expected from the glass walls. Hope the consultant will learn from BKI and BKK shortfall. Rumour said coldgen is a privatized project, so can expect MAB to pay hefty bill for aircon.

Interested to read about the baggage sorting system, will it be fully automated? Whether D7 can operate kangaroo route with minimum transit time at KUL will largely depend on the baggage sorting system. From the layout, first bag on line is estimated between 15 to 20 minute, last bag online about 25 to 30 minute.

Overall design for pax and operation :good: :good: :good:

If the terminal signboards or electronic displays are well designed and positioned, it should be relatively easy to find the departure gates without AK staff needing to direct the pax as they are currently doing at the old LCCT.

Believe aircrafts’ gates allocation to minimize number of gate agents/ground handling, minimize ground handling traveling time between two services and minimum number of teams of gate agents needed for over 70 gates is an interesting case for students of ‘Modeling with Differential Equation’.

May be AK can engage Dr Naim for a solution.
