KLIA2 - New Mega Low Cost Carriers Terminal

Recommended Posts

Yup. Looks like a good spot. But traffic will be almost exclusively AirAsia though

Malindo Air should also have significant operations by the time it opens!

Ah yes, the Lion slipped my mind. So the menu would be a good chunk of A320s and B739s with a sprinkle of A333s, A359s and B787s. That's not bad at all! :D

That is only if the Malindo bubble doesn't burst any time soon though.

Nice shot Capt!

From the photo I think it's hard for MAHB to blame AirAsia for the delay on things like BHS and aerobridges when the taxiways and aprons are not even completed.

issue delay more in design change after AA requirement (bigger capacity and runway.).BHS/Aerobridges just part of issue..also Malindo join at 2012.

They would need a battalion of foreign workers to really get it done before the end of the year. Hope the new KLIA2 would be able to handle the exponential growth of low cost travel in Malaysia, unlike what have happened with current LCCT.

Looking at the layout, looks like new LCCT traffic will be using the new runway for takeoff as well as most of the landings, when 32 is in use. When 14 is in use, they may use 14R for takeoff but new runway for landing, with quite some distance for taxy.

while we are eager to see KLIA2 to receive its first flight, my main concern is....no more runtuh-runtuh haaa!

Runtuh-runtuh appears to be epidemic for projects under the former commander-in-cheif!

Left pocket, right pocket wayang :D

I think we can anticipate spectacle of counter claims and litigation too when things have been summed up at day's end too :)

Hopefully neither UEM nor BP do as Global Upline has done at BKI - don't pay ? we walk off :D

After much delay, KLIA2 target launch now May 2014 9:07PM Jun 18, 2013

Hit by further delays, the new low cost carrier terminal KLIA2 is expected to be open for operations May 2, 2014, more than 10 months later than its last scheduled launch date.

According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) this was upon revision with the contractor UEMC-Bina Puri Joint Venture.

"UEMC-Bina Puri JV, the contractors for the terminal building have today confirmed that the completion date will be Apr 30, 2014, inclusive of securing the certificate of completion and compliance and operational readiness and airport transfer as per the contractual obligations.

"Based on the revised completion by the contractors, we are targeting to open KLIA2 for operations on May 2, 2014," it said in a late filing to Bursa Malaysia today.

It added that safety is the MAHB's "utmost priority" and it will ensure that the terminal building is completed within all safety standards.

It added that said it will continue to monitor the progress of the work and enforce the late fines accordingly according to the contract.

In a filing with Bursa yesterday, MAHB said it has slapped a fine of close to RM200,000 a day on the contractor starting June 16 for the failure to complete construction by the June 15 deadline.

The KLIA2, which will replace the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal was scheduled for launch on June 28 to coincide with KL International Airport's 15th anniversary.

Since the project was first tendered in 2009, it has been hampered by numerous problems, causing the cost to more than double, from RM1.7 billion to RM4 billion last year.

Contractors say deadline will be met

Joint venture (JV) partners, UEM Construction Sdn Bhd and Bina Puri Holdings Bhd, are working rigorously to meet the new KLIA2 opening date target of May 2, 2014 adds Bernama.

Mohd Razin Ghazali, managing director of UEM Builders Bhd, the parent company of UEM Construction, said JV will do so without compromising the safety, quality and operational efficiency of the new airport.

He added that JV has targeted to fully hand over the KLIA2 to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) on April 30, 2014.

In a statement today, he also said the JV partners have remaining physical construction of approximately seven percent, to complete.

"Upon achieving physical completion, we together with MAHB will immediately work towards obtaining the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) from the relevant authorities, which typically takes up to eight weeks.

"After that, MAHB will undertake the Operational Readiness & Airport Transfer or ORAT, a process that takes up an estimated three months to complete, with full handover targeted for April 30," he added.

As to the cause of the previous delays, Group Executive Director of Bina Puri Holdings, Matthew Tee said while the JV-partners had requested for several extensions, the approved extended period granted by MAHB was not sufficient in its opinion, to undertake the construction work.

The request for extension was mainly due to the various design changes, including variation works on the baggage handling system and unexpected ground condition which required additional piling and temporary sheet pile.

On the issuance of the certificate of non-completion by MAHB to the JV company, thus invoking Liquidated Ascertained Damages (LAD), he said it was a standard clause found in any construction contract.

The JV company Tee added, will visit the matter separately and upon handing over the project to MAHB, while reserving the rights under the contract and agreement signed.

The KLIA2 was supposed to open on June 28 this year after several earlier missed deadlines.

MAHB in a separate statement today said it was targeting to open the KLIA2 for operations on May 2, 2014, following the revised completion date of April 30 by the contractor.

So MAHB will continue to fine the contractors RM200,000 per day until May 2014?

69M till 05/2014 - not terribly crippling in relation to total cost which has grown by 2.3B (so far)

Can easily be recovered via a variation order or two :)

Plus it looks like good PR if 'tindakan tegas' is seen to be done :D

Ah yes, the Lion slipped ....

That is only if the Malindo bubble doesn't burst any time soon though.

You mean there are 2 bubbles in the LCCT ?...( If malindoair is a bubble , isn't the Red one , one too ? - well at least in Japan the Red pimple bubble is almost riped and waiting to be squeezed out from the ANA debacle ).

BTW , PEACH air IS EXCELLENT !!

Red one is doing ok. Their Malaysian ops is the one that is floating all their overseas ventures. Malindo is different coz I am still not convinced their hybrid business model will work especially here. That remains to be seen though. And they are expanding like nobody's business.

AirAsia: No more delays, please

KUALA LUMPUR: Budget airline, AirAsia Bhd, wants no more delays in the opening of the new low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT), known as KLIA2.

Chief Executive Officer Aireen Omar said the news of the 11-month delay in the opening of the new airport, from the target date of June 28, was not a surprise for the frills-free carrier, as it had predicted the delay.

“This is what we’ve always predicted that the airport would only be ready in the second half of next year.

“But we hope the April 30, 2014 airport completion deadline is the final one. We cannot afford to defer our expansion plans any further,” she told Bernama in a telephone interview from Paris.

Aireen was responding to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd’s announcement yesterday that the new completion date for klia2 is April 30, 2014, and will begin operations on May 2.

Aireen said now that the airport’s opening has been delayed, the contractors must ensure safety and quality of the new terminal.

She said as AirAsia was concerned on the safety of its passengers and the airport’s users at large, it hoped that MAHB and the contractors would ready the terminal technically, systematically and operationally.

“These readiness are the ones that usually require substantial amount of time for a smooth and safe operations from a new airport,” she said.

Aireen also said AirAsia, as the largest airline to utilise KLIA2, has yet to receive any official notification from MAHB with regard to the new dates for completion and operations.

“Certainly, lack of transparency right from the beginning has affected all parties in terms of planning.

“What we’re disappointed is that MAHB should have been more transparent and honest about it (the delay) from the beginning,” she said.

The completion date for KLIA2 has been revised several times due to changes made to the original plan including building a bigger terminal to handle more than 40 million passengers and installing an automated baggage handling system.

The new airport, envisaged to handle up to 45 million passengers a year, will have 60 gates, eight remote stands and 80 aerobridges, plus a 32,000 square metre retail space with 225 retail outlets.

The project was first tendered out in 2009. Its initial cost of RM1.9 billion has since ballooned to some RM4 billion with the bigger capacity plans and recent analyst reports indicate the cost might escalate further to RM4.5 billion.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak announced in January that KLIA2 will be launched on June 28 to coincide with the launch date of the KL International Airport (KLIA) in 1998.

Last month, MAHB announced KLIA2′s fifth delay, without giving any new date.

Slightly bigger.

A bigger joke than if they opened it now with major deficiencies in preparation and testing at this stage?? Come on guys.. if it's delayed, then let it be delayed lah.. Better late than never... I don't want to be a passenger in an airport that has been rushed to satisfy targets and egos.

Still, IMO, looks like a nifty terminal - can't wait to try it out when it does finally open.
