KLIA2 - New Mega Low Cost Carriers Terminal

Recommended Posts

I am not too bothered about the RM 3 charge. Maybe I am one of the very few people who appreciate that Airasia actually itemises its charges on its tickets instead of printing a long string of (meaningless to the layman) codes on its tickets!

Hmm... I wonder if there is a more cynicial plot behind this? e.g. the klia2 fee may follow the footsteps of fuel surcharge and balloon into something that is completely out of proportion to the overall ticket price?

In 2004 the fuel surcharge for Singapore - London Heathrow return is USD20. Today it's a whopping USD350...

I think it already happens - just check the different fees applicable for different destinations - the charges for KUL airport are not uniform. They vary from destination to destination.

It is time for the Malaysian govt. to introduce similar advertising laws as Australia and many western countries - they should only be allowed to advertise Nett fares - the total minimum amount you need to pay before optional items. Items like airport taxes and fees, fuel surcharges are not optional.

They can call it what they want - its up to the passengers to accept or reject them.

I just checked the fares for Bangkok and Malindo is clearly less expensive than Airasia. So passengers have a choice not accept Airasia's fares.

This weekend OD goes for RM457 whereas AK/FD goes for RM432. AK/FD have the frequency while OD have better comfort.

Yup. Their frequency is simply unbeatable. They have flights throughout the day. I especially like their very early morning flights.

Partners chip in to assist AirAsia settle in at klia2
Sepang, 11 May 2014 - The Malaysia Airports' Flight Operations Centre (FOC) is working hand-in-hand with AirAsia's operational team to guide them through the new systems at klia2. As a result of this, the airlines' operational efficiency has improved tremendously and the gates changes have reduced significantly in the last 24 hours to ease the inconvenience to passengers.
In addition Malaysia Airports had also sourced for help from other stakeholders such as Malindo and KLAS on lending manpower and ground handling equipments to AirAsia. Airasia has also agreed to engage additional workers to assist in the baggage handling. We are happy to note that with the cooperation of all parties, the gate management has improved to only being 8 bay changes made by AirAsia in the period of 12 hours from 12.00 am to 12.00 pm today (third day), compared to 182 bay changes on its first day of operations. Baggage delivery has also improved as all parties work hard to ensure that the delivery for the bags is improved even further to be in line with global best practice.
The public transport systems are also running well with 2400 trips recorded by taxis and 200 trips by buses. The ERL services are also heavily used due its convenient connection to the KL Sentral.
Malaysia Airports would like to thank the partners at klia2, particularly Malindo and KLAS for providing assistance for the sake of improving operational smoothness, for the benefit of the rakyat.
Malaysia Airports continues to have its daily meetings with AirAsia to monitor the operations. As far as the systems are concerned, the Check-in Systems, Gate Allocation System, Baggage Handling System and Aerobridges are all running smoothly.

AirAsia deploys 350 volunteers at klia2
AirAsia Allstars from various departments join forces to assist guests
Sepang, 11 MAY 2014
AirAsia deployed 350 volunteers to assist guests at klia2 airport. AirAsia Allstars (employees) from various departments join forces to assist guests at the newly launched airport.
An initiative led by the AirAsia People Department, volunteers are divided into four shifts which start as early as 5am and ends at 12am daily, including weekends.
Adzhar Ibrahim, AirAsia Group Head of People Department said “AirAsia volunteers are a dedicated team whose mission is to provide a helping hand to our guests travelling in and out of klia2 airport. For the past three days, our volunteers served as information resource specialists equipped to assist passengers with finding their way, gate locations, flight status, baggage claim, ground transportation and general enquiries”.
Identified by their distinctive red T-shirts, AirAsia volunteers can be found at various points located klia2 airport as well as Gateway mall.
A volunteer, Yvonne Lady Diana ak John Brian Anthony from the airline’s Corporate Culture Department said, “Majority of guests were unfamiliar of the new airport and had no idea where to go; and found the signages confusing. It is our job as volunteers to ensure that they go to the right place.
Another volunteer, AirAsia Pre-Flight Department employee Elizabeth Soon Sze Chin said, “Among the regular advice given to guests is to get to their respective departure gate on time, as some do get distracted by the various shopping outlets available here at klia2 and loses track of time. Unlike the LCCT, it takes more time to get from one point to the other and guests need to plan their time properly.
The volunteers consist of AirAsia corporate and non-operations staff, who willingly offered their services to complement and assist the airline’s Ground Services staff working at the new airport, to ensure smooth flow of operations and passenger movement.
When the airline’s People Department opened the registration for volunteers, it received overwhelming response from AirAsia Allstars from all over Malaysia, including Thailand and Indonesia. The number of volunteering requests even exceeded the actual total needed by the airline.
Their readiness to help fellow colleagues reflects AirAsia’s high camaraderie spirits and family values, setting the airline apart from the rest of the field.
The volunteering exercise even provides a great experience to many AirAsia employees. One of them, Chua Cher Lin from the airline’s People Department said, “We are excited to be volunteers as it gives us the opportunity to interact with our guests and to make new friends. It gives us great pleasure to present a great and memorable flying experience to all our guests.”
The volunteering program will continue for the next one month, a mark of commitment by the airline and its dedicated employees in ensuring a smooth flow of operations at the new klia2.

Probably a little too late, but this is a heartfelt farewell to the LCCT by Uncle Tony, as embargoed from our spy at the AK Gossip Division. Uncle Tony terms klia2 as PLCCT:

Dear All,

By now our first 320 would have docked at klia2 which I like to refer to as PLCCT (permanent low cost terminal).

It has been a very taxing time for me fighting this from Labu to klia2.

For 12 years it has been one battle after another. From Subang to the main terminal building to LCCT and now klia2.

We won some and lost a lot, but the fight, though bruising for me has been worth it as we stand tall as the largest low cost airline in Asia and World’s Best Low Cost Airline for the 5th time running.

The battle continues. Our model has changed, as now we will use aerobridges and are operating from a full service airport. But there are opportunities such as getting a new market such as business travellers.

I would ask you all to voice out. If you feel MAHB are treating us unfairly whether car park or fees, you must speak up.

There is no doubt that I am public enemy number one, as I was, when I fought the unfairness on MAS being subsidised or I fought for us to get KL- Singapore rights or the many other battles. But my responsibility is to all of you and to ensure you have a job and a bonus. That, me and Dato’ Din have done. So I make no apologies and I am not in a popularity contest. My job is to deliver and deliver in a professional way.

I will join you all next week but I will leave this more to Aireen and Azran. I think Dato’ Din will be there for a bit on the 9th. (Friday, May 9th 2014)

My thoughts are with all of you and wish you the best of luck today and tomorrow.

I am ever so proud of all of you. We have come a long long way despite so many obstacles.

With AirAsia India and Japan coming on soon, with AirAsia X Thailand and AirAsia X Indonesia, we will have an amazing network.

There are many good things in klia2 and we will gain those.

The airline industry is going through a real mess. Tiger Air just lost 190 million dollars. Lion has many planes grounded. MAS and Garuda problems are well documented.

It is an opportunity for us to grow and dominate, we must stay focused and focus in cost. But it's going to be a challenge and not easy.

Thanks again, good luck and see you soon.

Lots of love

Tony.

Malindo Air Optimistic Operation At klia2 Will Straighten Out

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysian hybrid airline, Malindo Air is extremely positive that operations at the klia2 will straighten out within the next one or two weeks.

"Our offer to help out is always open to other carriers as we are committed to ensure the smooth-sailing of operations at klia2," said Malindo in a statement Monday.

Malindo said that AirAsia was slightly shorthanded over the weekend and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) enlisted it to help to assist with logistics movement.

"We were on hand to immediately allocate a portion of our ramp manpower to be stationed at mainly the baggage unloading and transfer section.

"During that time, our ramp staff used our own ground equipment and transportation, including one of our belt loaders, one baggage tractor and six baggage trolleys to help out AirAsia," it said.

Malindo's ground staff also assisted with procedures to loan wheelchairs to AirAsia's passengers.

Just went driving around LCCT and then runway 33. Workers are on hand to dismantles various shops and F&B outlets there and also the old LCCT food court. I hope security are tight so that no unauthorized personnel one can sneak on to the ramp and roam free.

Didn't know they rerouted the Jalan Pekeliling to Runway 3 and then onwards to KLIA2.

From spotting point of view its going to be a real consideration of give and take; you want A320 and all their special liveries, runway 33 it is. if international airline and other type of planes is the main target, 32L. hmm... decision decision... or spent thousands on super zoom lens to take runway 33 landing from 32L.

AirAsia's grouses are valid. But I'm not convinced that RM3 is. Understandable but still an outright shove down the throat to everyone. How opportune, at a time when their yields have taken a dive. You've gotta love Tony if you're an investor or shareholder.

For the time being, criticisms of klia2 will be subdued. MAHB has finally got it up and running and by the standards of major airport expansions, things have run relatively smooth.

But eventually, someone has to pay for this not-exactly-low-cost facility. Airlines and IATA are already questioning the passenger service charges for klia2 and rightly so. The facilities at KLIA aren't exactly twice better than that of klia2. Some regional airlines operating at KLIA will see this as unfair competition.

MAHB will realize that eventually, this low passenger service charge for klia2 is unsustainable. AirAsia on the other hand, will not accept any increase. They will just remind MAHB and the government 'I told you so' that klia2's design was flawed for a sustainable low-cost operation.

It won't be long before MAHB and the government start finding themselves in a situation on how to recoup their investments without increasing the passenger service charges.

MAHB has said a lot about gearing it's business model towards more ancillary income. MAHB, you better.

On the operational side, the location of klia2 with respect to Runways 33/15 and 32L/14R means a very long taxi time for departures during months with a northerly wind. This adds significantly to costs, both time and money.

The DCA has also done an extremely poor job in redrawing the departure and arrival procedures. Eastbound SIDs for Runway 33/15 involve a lot more track miles. The STARs for WMKK/KUL were always unnecessarily complicated with too many transitions. They just got more complicated.

In an age when there are serious issues regarding climate change, carbon footprint and permanently high oil prices, these flaws are unacceptable. What's more, WMKK/KUL doesn't suffer from land scarcity, terrain, highly populated surroundings, noise restrictions, proximity to a neighbouring airspace, military airspace, etc. In many countries, these and many other factors place lots of restrictions on air traffic management. What the DCA has done for WMKK/KUL is totally incomprehensible.

The opening of klia2 and Runway 33/15 was a good chance for the DCA to simplify the procedures and improve air traffic management. What they've done is complicate it further and made it more inefficient. The UK's CAA and NATS would be shocked to see this. DCA's planners only need 5 minutes in Heathrow to realize what they could have done.

You have to feel for the air traffic controllers.

Easy. RM 59.90 (between 12-3pm so you can call it a McValue Lunch) for a big mac set, RM 79.90 at other times. RM 55.90 for a KFC snack plate (but it does come with coleslaw and wedges though)...

MAHB has said a lot about gearing it's business model towards more ancillary income. MAHB, you better.

MAHB is addicted to ancillary income from rental and operating outlets. Many years ago, there were few visitors to airport and air travelling was a luxury, higher price was imposed. With minimum 15 million pax per year at KLIA2, charging premium price is hardly justified.

Operating shopping center at premium price is uncharted and interested to find out the results in a few years time.

On the operational side, the location of klia2 with respect to Runways 33/15 and 32L/14R means a very long taxi time for departures during months with a northerly wind. This adds significantly to costs, both time and money.

Airline operation cost is not MAHB concern and opportunity to teach who is the boss.

You have to feel for the air traffic controllers.

As a layman observing the various flightpaths of departing and arriving aircraft, the airspace around Sepang looks extremely complex.

Yes, addtitional pressure will be placed on air traffic controllers as there are aircraft all flying at different flight levels. failure to co-ordinate them properly will result in mid air collisions.

DCA must review the current arrangements. Otherwise, air traffic expansion later on will cause some severe problems and the idea of having a third runway would be self defeating.

I am afraid it is mid-air collision waiting to happen, the separation between the runway and distance between aircraft should be as clear as possible...........Air Crash Investigation episode soon?

Klia2 Traffic Peaked For Wesak Holiday

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- Over the last 48 hours and the Wesak holiday, klia2 saw a peak in its traffic movements, recording close to 160,000 passengers on more than 900 flights.

"This is a good indicator of the healthy traffic performance by airlines operating at klia2 and this is also consistent with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd' expectations of reaching 24 million passengers within the first 12 months of operations at klia2," said MAHB, in a statement Wednesday.

Malaysia Airports has also observed stable and very good performance from the flight and airport operations and on-time-performance (OTP) records show that 88 per cent of arrival bags were delivered within 15 minutes of actual time of arrival.

The aerobridges docking were all on time with 98 per cent of the aerobridges docked within two minutes of aircraft being parked at gate.

The bays and gates allocation have also improved significantly to being just nine bay changes on May 13 and no bay changes up till noon today.

"The commercial offerings at the klia2 terminal continue to be improved with 105 commercial outlets opened now for public's enjoyment and out of these, 35 are Food and Beverages (F&B) outlets spread out through the terminal in both the domestic and international boarding piers.

There are 12 F&B outlets at the departure hall, nine at the domestic piers and 14 at the international piers.

In addition, there are 60 F&B outlets at Gateway@klia2 and four banks operating at klia2 namely AmBank and Maybank at Gateway@klia2 whilst CIMB Bank and Hong Leong Bank are in the terminal proper, and a total of six Bureau de change services for the convenience of passengers.

Malaysian Airports said over the last two days more than 200,000 people were at klia2 and gateway@klia2 and facilities were heavily used, the airport operations team and the service contractors were working extra hard to ensure that the facilities were in good order.

"Malaysia Airports seeks the public's patience and support in helping it keep the facilities clean and in good working order with proper usage," MAHB said, adding that they were looking at new initiatives such as to install the Customer Realtime Feedback System in the toilets for the public to report issues pertaining to cleanliness and breakdowns, to help MAHB to respond quicker.

Was browsing WMKK Jeppesen STARS, I wonder would those RNAV-incapable aircraft ever use the arrivals that flies over VKL (DAKUS 1V, GUPTA 1V etc etc...)? The course reversal for ILS approach once passing VKL is pretty interesting :)

I'm guessing KIKAL 3 and LAPIR 3 make a lot more sense.

They will clear you for the published arrival, but expect track shortening and radar vector to final. On the 1st day a lot of people were caught high, but this is KUL and you can expect the ATC to play you out. Just be prepared and everything should be okay.

At klia2, find mahb tried to;

- maximize walking distance

- maximize change of level/floor

- maximize number of shops

From car park to gate should be considered a journey /trip by itself.

Klia2 was delayed for over a year and yet quite a number of shops, lounge have yet to be opened. Either these tenants or mahb didn't believe klia2 would be opened on time by delaying the tenancy agreement.
