I'm guessing the runway tour came about largely resulting from bad press about cracks and depressions ? :)

I'm guessing the runway tour came about largely resulting from bad press about cracks and depressions ? :)

Well, nothing much was said about the runway except for its the first in this region/world to have three runways for an airport, and that the runway measure 4km that could land B747 and A380.

The tour is a short 15 mins ride on cramped buses. I thought a ride in the normal airport transfer bus would have been better since it has bigger unobstructed view on the runway. Nevertheless, we also made the "historical" sky-bridge under-pass that only wide enough for up to B737 and A320 airplanes.

While the fanfare is still hot, the auditors are also hot on the heels of the management with regards to the cost (RM100 million) paid for building the 3rd. runway.

Whatever the reasons are, it was only a limited ride on the runway - we spent more time on the aprons and taxiways. klia2 now looks like a modern airport whereas LCCT looked like a 1960's airport.

Incidentally, there are still one or two gates that will require passengers to board the aircraft using stairs. The same will apply to aircraft parked at remote stands. From our experience going down for the runway ride, it will not be easy as there are only stairs down to ground level. Disabled passengers will find it tough.

AirAsia’s complaints valid over klia2 move

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia has valid reasons to complain about the move to klia2, said Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed and added that the airline would not complain if there were no reasons for them to do so.

"They do have valid reasons to be concerned. Action should be taken by MAHB to address the grouses of their main customer. Some 80% of the planes now in KLIA and LCCT belong to AirAsia," Nur Jazlan told the media after meeting with AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, its CEO Aireen Omar and executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun.
Earlier at the meeting with the PAC, AirAsia denied making demands that led to a delay in klia2's opening which had caused an increase in its construction cost.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) had earlier said the low-cost carrier had wanted a museum and spa at the airport.
"There were many contradictions between the statements of MAHB and AirAsia. We will investigate further.
"AirAsia has denied that they had requested for a museum and a spa at the airport, or that the airport accommodate 45 million passengers annually.
"They also denied that they refused to move, but were only raising concerns about the safety of their passengers as well as moving their operations to klia2," Nur Jazlan said.
Nur Jaslan, who is Pulai MP, said PAC would continue its investigation into the construction delay.
"While the terminal itself has been certified safe, some of the current problems that has been brought to our attention include the uneven ground at the planes' parking bay that results in pools of water when it rains. This may be a hindrance for inbound or outbound flights," he added.
Fernandes, meanwhile, said they will be moving to klia2 on May 9, but did not say if he was satisfied with the move.
"We are happy with the discussion with PAC today. We have shared our concerns with them. While we have not seen the report, we will move as told," he said.

See everybody grumpily climbing staircase, huffing and puffing, leaving KUL for another destination, but Mr Curly looks cool. Maybe an AK frequent flyer?

When he returns to KUL, he's surprised it's klia2 with the aerobridge!

New budget airport to open in MH370 shadow

Malaysia this week opens what it calls the world's largest airport built specifically for low-cost airlines, a project driven by budget travel's phenomenal growth but which debuts under the shadow of missing flight MH370.

The US$1.2 billion (RM4 billion) facility near the main Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) was originally targeted to open three years ago but has been hit by repeated delays, amid concerns over safety and subpar construction, even as costs have doubled.
But the new klia2 budget terminal will begin operations Friday with an initial 56 flights, increasing the load as airlines move full operations over from a nearby existing facility in coming days.

No indication that JetStar is moving to klia2. The only airline that is moving from the MTB is Malindo.

Is Jetstar (3K) moving?

Heard from KLAS personnel (ground handler for jetstar) that 3K also will move to klia2, but not sure when it will start to fly from klia2. As for now, lion air, malindo, tigerair, cebu pacific only. 5J will be the first airlines landing in klia2 by 2am on 2nd May .

Malindo Air Aircraft, First To Touch Down At klia2
KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 (Bernama) -- Malindo Air today announced that flight OD1027 from Kota Kinabalu will be the first to touch-down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport2 (klia2) after midnight.
The flight is scheduled to touch down at 12:05 am at klia2 terminal runway which will mark a significant day for Malindo Air and the Malaysian aviation industry.
"We are very excited about the first flight as we have been working very closely with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd and the Ministry of Transport to witness the touch down as their fruit of action.
"The facilities at klia2 are remarkably built and is up to par with world class standards and will provide the ultimate airport experience to our passengers," said Chief Executive Officer Chandran Rama Muthy in a statement Wednesday.
Saying that low-cost travel, with added value, was the way to go these days. he said the opening of klia2 complemented this year's Visit Malaysia campaign.
"There could not have been a more auspicious time for klia2, the tourism industry and for carriers such as Malindo Air," said Chandran.
The hybrid airline, based at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, offered low fares with added value and operated a network of scheduled passenger services throughout Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh and India.

ERL Eyes 40 Per Cent Rise In Total Ridership On KLIA Express
SEPANG, April 30 (Bernama) -- Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) expects the total ridership on KLIA Express to increase by 40 per cent in the first year after the operations of its extension to klia2 starts on May 2, said Chief Executive Officer, Noormah Mohd Noor.
KLIA Express currently carries 19,000 passengers a day.
"The throughput of LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) was higher than KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport), so we expect to gain more share from the opening of the new klia2," she said.
Klia2 will be launched on May 2 to replace the LCCT, in a move to cope with rising demand for budget airlines.
ERL operates the non-stop KLIA Express link, which connects KL Sentral to klia2 with a 33-minute trip, at the frequency rate of 15 minutes during peak hours.
It also operates KLIA Transit, a 39-minute trip which stops at four stations along the way, with the frequency rate of 20 minutes during peak hours.
A direct one-way trip from KL Sentral to KLIA or klia2 costs the same at RM35 per person.
The 2.2-kilometre extension was reportedly built at a cost of RM100 million.

Trains are already packed in the early mornings. I'm worried it'll become another 7am KTM Komuter ride to endure.

As it is, I've seen some people standing near the doors after failing to find a seat. Hopefully they'll make it every 10 mins during peak hours if it really gets that packed.

I second Suzanne...

:)

Grumpy when pay peanuts, want chicken!

Some pay more than a fortune (more expensive than MAS on some domestic sector) and yet get sulky, long face service from ground crew at airports, still climb mountain to board a plane.

On other hand, sure the ticket price for ERL will be so expensive since the price of a mere kilometre additional track costs whooping RM1 million.
