AirAsia set for worst over KLIA2 deadline

PETALING JAYA: Low-cost carrier AirAsia Bhd says the delay in the completion of the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) terminal will affect its Malaysian growth plans for the year.

AirAsia chief executive officer Aireen Omar said the airline has prepared for the worst-case scenario in the event the new terminal will not be ready by May 2 this year.

Aireen added the airline has prepared contingency plans if the new terminal opening date is delayed for the sixth time.

Speaking to The Malaysian Reserve, she said the delays in the completion of the hybrid airport in Sepang have already forced the airline to trim delivery of new aircraft based in Kuala Lumpur from the original 10 to just three this year.

AirAsia has a firm order for 475 Airbus A320s for delivery up to 2026. To date 143 aircraft have been delivered.

“The current low-cost carrier terminal has no aircraft parking bays. We have to park them somewhere else and have to tow them to the terminal everyday. How are we supposed to bring in new aircraft,” she said.

Aireen said the lack of aircraft bays is already disrupting flight operations for the airline during peak periods and is already costing it more in logistics.

However, Aireen said the hiccup in aircraft numbers for its Kuala Lumpur operations will not affect the overall growth of the airline. She said AirAsia is also ready to work with airport operator Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to ensure that KLIA2 can be ready by May 2.

“We are ready to move in and start operating from KLIA2 which we think is a terminal that could stimulate growth for both AirAsia and MAHB.

“However we have certain concerns on the readiness of the terminal building and runway,” she said.

Malaysia’s first hybrid terminal, KLIA2, which is being built to accommodate 45 million passengers annually, was initially set to open in September 2011 but the date has been delayed five times.

Its initial budget of RM1.6 billion has since ballooned to RM4 billion, with the latest figures to be revealed only after the completion of the project, according to Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

The contractors of the main terminal building, a UEM Construction Sdn Bhd-Bina Puri Holdings Bhd joint venture, failed to secure the certificate of completion and compliance by end-January forcing the latest deferment.

Honestly, does it surprise you?

Which one? Cracks appearing or the article saying planes take off and land on taxiways? Both?

The advantage the cowshed has over a spanking palace is that it does not need so much maintenance. You know how good MAHB is at maintenance? ;)

Higher airport tax in klia2 could cut passenger loads, budget airlines’ profits

Already reeling from lower profits, Malaysian budget airlines expect to lose more passengers and money if the proposed international passenger service tax (PSC) at the new klia2 terminal is the same as the RM65 charged at the KLIA now, say analysts and sources.

The Malaysian Insider understands that budget airline officials have been told to brace for a PSC as high as RM65, double the RM32 now charged at the current low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) by operator Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB). Among the budget carriers at the LCCT are AirAsia, AirAsia X and Cebu Pacific Air.
"They are talking about rates near or equal RM65 in briefings to analysts," one analyst told The Malaysian Insider, adding this would help MAHB recoup faster from klia2's construction delays.

C'mon, TF cant have the whole pie to himself! Something's gotta give

Why must it be only about TF?

What about the fledgling airline, Malindo Air? What about the tenants of the retail lots at the airport?

Fewer pax also mean lower foot traffic at the shops. Why is MAHB in such a hurry to recoup the construction costs? If it did not have the money, it should not have spent so much on a terminal for LCCs.

It' defeats the idea of low cost if the airport terminal charges high taxes. It's not the airlines' fault if the airport operator decides to go lavish! It's quite certain they will increase it, sadly!

Since it is a 'hybrid' terminal not low cost, if the charges at KLIA2 is significantly lower than MTB, will some of the airlines operate from MTB move to KLIA2 ?

No wonder Airasia is talking about moving in only in Sept or Oct - they are probably thinking they need that time to negotiate!! Otherwise, they will do a BKI T2 act again, I guess! :(

MAHB had previously assured pax that airport tax will not be raised because they built a shopping mall at the airport and the tenants will pay for the cost inflation. Looks like they are going back on their word.

Its the same thing as what is now happening to the second Penang Bridge - originally promised the toll will be the same as first Penang Bridge but compensated by extending the concession period. Now they want to raise the toll AND keep the longer concession period! :(

In hindsight, it would've been better if MAB just allocate the land for the new LCCT and let TF, being the king of LCC, design the terminal. The construction could've been done by any of them.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20.

Don't think that is workable as it would not be fair to the other airlines. Labu East is OK as it is totally a private venture but MAHB is a GLC and it would not be appropriate for them to take such a hands off approach... Incidentally, if KLIA East had gone ahead, it would have opened long ago (2011).

Hahaha you really buy that story? Had they went ahead with the construction, come halfway it will always be the government who's gonna bail out the project and TF got his own airport for free.

Taxes at KLIA2 can't be the same as LCCT. Even if they charges the same as MTB, the facilities offered are more than justified for the increase.

What is wrong with that story? Why should people not believe that?

Looking at those plans - the airport looks rather simple and similar to the current LCCT. Just a terminal, some roads, runway/taxiway and transport hub. U mean between Sime Darby and Airasia, they can't raise RM 1.6b?

Yes, klia2 is not the same as LCCT. But nobody asked for it to be so grand. MAHB lost sight of the objectives of having a low cost terminal and got carried away with it. Perhaps cronies were demanding contracts and they upgraded the airport so that they can dish out more contracts.

As it is supposed to be an LCCT, why was it made so grand? Why should the passengers pay more for something that they do not need? All they need is a building that is bigger than the LCCT and that can accommodate future expansion.

My guess is AK will continue to delay their move to KLIA2. KLIA2, like KLIA before this, will be eerily empty for a good couple of year as negotiation takes place. Without AK there is no traffic.

Let's hope KLIA2 will not be like KKIA.

Another idea is to make klia2 the new FSC terminal - since many say that it is nicer than KLIA.

Then the old KLIA can become the new LCCT.

But MAHB is really hard up for cash. See this report:
