This is the worst decision the cabinet can make. Why didn't they use subang then if they wanted another airport? Less money involved.

what stupidity. KLIA is screwed for good.

Some people in power may feel vulnerable in the next cabinet reshuffle and GE. Hence, have the mentality to grasp as much as possible at the shortest time :finger:

People in power profit from construction. To use SZB not only less money is involved and will benefit different group. Hence, twin airport of KUL :sorry:

Believe DCA is having trouble to cope with parallel runway operation at WMKK, won’t like to have another approach control next to WMKK or approach from different direction, it is likely that the runway at Labu will be built and assigned as 32R/14L of WMKK.

With the addition of Labu, the airport reserved land area of the twin airport could be the biggest in the world and the taxiway connecting the twin airport could be the longest in the world! :pardon: <_>

Btw, KLIA is screwed from day one ;)

wait, no need runway, no need taxiway, no need apron or tower in labu..just terminal..

they just build the terminal there in labu where pax will check in, then pax will board busses that will transport them to planes at LCCT apron :db: so they can charge another RM2 for the bus fare on top of airport tax? pay online and get 50% discount..

on the 30 minutes ride from labu to lcct, snack attack being serve as well where pax can munch on the famous nasi lemak or roti jala at mere RM6 each

hahaha

You never know, you might just be right. As it is,it is still unclear whether they are planning to built a new airport or just a terminal.

Well this piece of news takes the year ending raspberry award for its 'innovation' and 'feasibility'. Subang, KLIA, LCCT and now Labu!

The architect, Kurokawa Kisho, who designed KLIA must be turning in his grave (no disrespect intended Kurokawa san!) if he heard that KLIA (not LCCT) is unable to expand further. It was built with grand vision and plan for expansion with capability for 4 satellite terminals. Alas, poor management and all the politicking, elbow nudging and red tapes resulted in a dream yet to be fulfilled. Whatever it is, KLIA is still a beautiful architectural feat.

Very sad indeed for KLIA if Labu LCCT plan is successful

Shoooshhh.....

I pray hard, so the money won't be put on this ambitious project.

There are more needy people hoping the government to feed their mouth.

Why do we need crap project like this?

First, the Institut Jantung Negara, then here we go...the LCC private terminal.

YES it is zero sen spent!

But.......i might say it is a big WASTE.

Better spend the money on something else.

Maybe for a better public transportation in KL?

Better bus terminal to replace PUDURAYA.

Better integrated terminal in PUTRAJAYA

hahahah...off topic but another stupid, nonsense decision was the planned sale of IJN to Sime darby.

WTF?????

The current PM and his cabinet are a bunch of idiots. IJN is THE premier cardiothoracic surgery centre in Malaysia ... operating on 2400 surgical cases a year (more than Papworth hospital in the UK - their largest centre). Instead of building on IJN's excellent reputation nationally and regionally, the government wants to make a quick buck and sell it off to Sime Darby. And these bastards will then inherit the best equipment and staff - and try to make a profit at the expense of the Malaysian public. For sure - ordinary malaysians will be pushed off the waiting lists for fully paying 'medical tourists'.

I am so incensed - really really livid with anger. Was hoping that when I am fully trained one day to return and serve the public in IJN but if the bastards sell it off.......i will go work in Singapore's National Heart Centre. at least they have their sense of pride. AND they accept my qualifications so i can transfer my training there. MALAYSIA doesn't. and they complain no one wants to return to work for them???

IJN should be made into a teaching hospital for all Malaysian cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists....not a way to make a quick buck.

Sorry.......off topic. Maybe i should go into politics and kick their asses all the way to Kamunting.

RANT OVER

Izanee... I feel for you. That being said, it is no wonder a lot of Msians make there way down here to work. When I was in school (was trained as an engineer by the way), 3/4 of my class was Msians. And they always scored way better than us Sporeans and one day the lecturer was so incensed he gave it to us proper... That the Indian and Malaysian students are hardworking, and us Sporeans are lazy. Hahahahaha... That lecture made us wise up a wee bit though.

24-12-2008: AirAsia can't wait for MAHB, takes up Sime Darby's offer

by Surin Murugiah

Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Bhd took up Sime Darby Bhd's proposal to construct a private low-cost carrier (LCC) airport in Labu, Negri Sembilan, as it could not wait for Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to finalise plans for the setting up of a bigger LCC terminal to replace the existing LCCT at KLIA.

Hearing of AirAsia's predicament, Sime Darby itself took the opportunity to approach AirAsia with the KLIA East@Labu airport plan, which would complement the conglomerate's multi-billion ringgit development project at Negri Sembilan Vision Valley.

Sime Darby and AirAsia officials called for a press conference here yesterday to comment on the Labu airport, which has received a lot of flak from analysts, particularly questioning the former's involvement in the off-beat project. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity.

An AirAsia official said MAHB's plan for the permanent LCCT had yet to be finalised and if the carrier were to follow the airport operator's schedule, it could potentially face a shortfall of at least 41 parking bays for its aircraft.

He said the earliest possible date for the permanent LCCT to be realised was estimated by MAHB to be in 2014, by which time there would be a 12-million passenger capacity shortfall at the present terminal.

"Even with the extensions at the current LCCT, there would be a shortfall for both aircraft and passengers within a year-and-a-half. As it is there has been an 18-month delay in completion of works," he said.

"Also, the alternative sites offered by MAHB for the permanent LCCT were unsuitable. Seven months after the cost had been agreed, MAHB told us that the runways could not be built at one location because of the height of the express rail link track, while the other site was marshland where construction works can only start one year after it has been filled with earth," he added.

A Sime Darby official said it mooted the idea of the terminal some six months ago and had approached AirAsia on the plan, which was part of the infrastructural development that would act as the growth catalysts to its planned Vision Valley.

Sime Darby would build the airport on a 1,200-hectare land at its Labu Estate and it would be operated by AirAsia.

"Sime is purely the developer, and will sell the land and building to AirAsia. The construction financing has not been finalised but it would be totally private investment and no government funds will be involved," said the Sime Darby official.

"The RM1.6 billion estimated cost is for the terminal building and runway, and does not include the land cost," he said.

Assuming it gets the government's nod to go ahead with the project, the airport could be completed for operations by March 2011. It is designed to handle 30 million passengers per annum and would have about 70 parking bays for aircraft.

AirAsia group was projected to handle 60 million passengers per annum to use its services by 2013, said the carrier's official.

Sime Darby's Vision Valley will comprise self-contained cities with each particular theme - entertainment, education, hi-tech, recreation and sport.

"It could become the centre for conferences, sports events, tourism and even rock concerts in the region with the facilities that we are planning," said the Sime Darby official. "The proposed LCCT is also a catalyst for other development around the area, would create many jobs and lead to permanent infrastructure development," he said.

He said it was also an opportune time for Sime Darby to embark on the project as construction costs had started coming down.

The AirAsia official said a bus depot, and possibly an extension of the ERL service as well as a link road to the KLIA main terminal were being explored under the plan.

Asked how the airline planned to fund the acquisition of the airport and land, he said the company was studying various options.

"We might not even own the building. There are many private investors who view infrastructure as stable property that would generate a steady income, so we could even be leasing it from someone."

Some revelations here, though credibility can be justifiably doubted by officials claiming anonymity despite calling for a press conference :)

First I've read of a runway being built

Melaka govt supports LCCT plan in Labu

Published: 2008/12/25

THE Melaka state government fully supports the plan to build a low cost carrier terminal (LCCT) in Labu, Negeri Sembilan, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said.

He said the LCCT will indirectly promote tourist arrivals to Melaka as the proposed location was close to the state.

The state government is supporting the plan as it will also bring benefits to the state, he told reporters after officiating the ’Jom Ke Melaka’ campaign in Seremban today.

The LCCT will involve an investment of RM1.6 billion. It is to be developed by AirAsia Sdn Bhd and Sime Darby Bhd and the completion is expected in 2011.

Mohd Ali said by 2010, some 732,000 passengers will not be able to be catered to by the LCCT in Sepang and this figure is expected to go up to four million by 2011.

“Therefore, it is reasonable to speed up the building of a LCCT in Labu to further boost the development of the country’s tourism sector.

Also, the building of the airport will not involve government financing and instead the private sector will be handling it,” he said.

In his speech earlier, Mohd Ali said that as of November, Melaka recorded a total of 5.86 million tourist arrivals, an increase by 11.4 per cent or 596,752 visitors compared with the previous corresponding period. - Bernama

What ?! This after all the hype about Batu Berendam regional hub ? :)

AirAsia, Sime Darby In Talks On New Airport

December 23, 2008

Malaysian budget airline AirAsia is in talks with plantation-to-property conglomerate Sime Darby on a MYR1.6 billion ringgit (USD$462 million) low-cost carrier terminal project, the companies said on Tuesday.

"AirAsia and Sime Darby jointly expressed an interest to the government to develop and operate a private low-cost terminal situated on Sime Darby's land in Negri Sembilan," they said in filings with the stock exchange.

"The project is in the initial planning phase and (the companies) are engaged in preliminary discussions with state and federal authorities."

Local media reported on Saturday the government has approved the construction of a new low-cost carrier terminal in the southern state of Negri Sembilan.

The new airport will be part of a city development and will have the capacity to handle 25 million passengers a year, the government said, according to the reports.

AirAsia flew about 18 million people this year using the low-cost carrier terminal at Sepang near Kuala Lumpur, which can accommodate 15 million passengers a year at maximum capacity.

You know...

From reading the news, it feels like AirAsia is going too fast too soon.

Yeah they have the growth numbers, but still i feel that instead of jumping at the first opportunity of building their own, why not just make MAHB work faster?

I mean if we follow the KLIA masterplan, we will have MORE than enough space for LCCs and full airlines.

The plan calls for a LCCT the size of KLIA's MTB, and at least 4 dozen places for planes.

MAHB is also to blame for being a sloth here, but this (Sime Darby & AA) plan feels like they are just going to build for the sake of need - without proper planning.

Which is what the bigger part of malaysia is.

I want KUL to be as busy and as big as Schipol is.

I dont want KUL to be Kampung Baharu.

Lee Kuan Yew would rather see SIA die out than to lose Changi as an international hub. In Malaysia - the government wants to make money from whoever they can .....KLIA is not important. its who can give them more money

I just hope and pray that this is nothing more than a ploy by TF to get MAHB to wake-up and speed up it's plans for the LCCT.

If you're a regular user of the LCCT at peak periods, you'll know that some of AK's arguments are valid. MAHB's monopoly on things has caused misery to others. A bright side to this new plan is that travellers will get to enjoy better facilities, if words from Sime and AK are to be believed. But this will be at the demise of KLIA. Well, MAHB will not let this just go away. Losing AK will burn a huge hole in their pockets. Maybe it's time to scrap the KLIA masterplan altogether and build the LCCT terminal at the satellite reserve land?

MAHB claims wanted to focus on its core business, on one hand wanted to shed F1 circuit (unprofitable) but on the other hand wanted to develop land around KLIA (chances to award fat contracts) and getting more involve with more duty free shops and food outlets. No matter how many duty free shops and fast food MAHB open, the concept, set up, etc will be 90’s. MAHB should focus on providing facilities to airlines, retailers, freight forwarders and pax rather than competing with them :finger:

MAHB has the typical mindset of its political master; to avoid LCCT to compete with MTB, instead of upgrading MTB to be better but chose to downgrade LCCT facility :( :finger:

From MAHB performance in the last 10 years, it is better for AK and pax to have another terminal operator. Never know, Labu terminal operator may one day take over the management of MAHB :good:
