James Gota 0 Report post Posted October 13, 2008 Malaysia: AirAsia X Eyes Flight To London In March Business 2008-10-13 17:20 KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Malaysian long-haul budget airline AirAsia X said Monday (13 Oct) it expects to begin flights to London in March as part of its global expansion program. Chief Executive Azran Osman-Rani said the airline's operations have not been hurt so far by the global financial meltdown. "We hope to launch our first flight to London in March," Azran told reporters on the sidelines of a global aviation forum here. Bookings will open in November, he said. "We haven't seen a drop in (travel) demand. In fact, it's picking up because I suspect people are trading down" by seeking to fly more economically, he said. He declined to say which airport AirAsia X will fly to in London. The airline had earlier said it planned to fly to London's Stansted Airport by late this year. Azran said the delay was because AirAsia was finalizing operational details. AirAsia X, which began operations in November 2007, currently flies to Australia's Gold Coast and Perth as well as Hangzhou in China. It has said it will launch flights to Melbourne next month. Azran said the carrier expects to receive the first of 25 new wide-bodied Airbus A330 planes next week, which will give passengers an improved level of service including in-flight entertainment. A second aircraft will be delivered in December and several more by next year to cater for growth to other destinations including India and Japan, he said. AirAsia X is 48% owned by parent Aero Ventures Sdn. Bhd. Billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Group and AirAsia, the region's top low-cost carrier, hold 16% stake each in the carrier. Japan's Orix Group and Bahrain-based Manara Consortium each own a 10% equity. (AP) Source http://www.mysinchew.com/node/17291 Yippeee
