JAKARTA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Thirteen Chinese were hurt when a plane operated by China Airlines was struck by turbulence on its route from Taipei to Bali of Indonesia on Saturday, a doctor said.

Guning Atmajaya, the doctor who treated eight of the hurt passengers at the Sanglah Hospital, said that six of them were seriously injured and needed an intensive medical care.

"All of the 13 injured passengers are Chinese. Six of them need special medical treatment as they suffered from serious broken bones," he told Xinhua on telephone from the hospital.

The plane with the flight number CI-687 and 400 passengers on board was hit by the turbulence around 14:00 Bali time, which caused the plane swaying, head of the Indonesian health ministry crisis center Rustam Pakaya said.

"The turbulence strongly hit the plane and hurt 13 people, six of them suffering from broken bones," he told Xinhua.

The plane landed at 14:10 Bali time, said Pakaya.

Security officer at the Ngurah Rai international airport in BaliMade Sugiarta told Xinhua that the plane was on its route from Taipei of China to Bali of Indonesia.

Jakarta - At least seven people were injured when turbulence hit a Boeing 747-400 jetliner belonging to China Airlines on Saturday en route from Taipei to Indonesia's Bali island, an airport official said. A spokesman for the Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport named Dimyati said the CAL-687 jet carrying 357 people dropped drastically to about 25,000-feet altitude from 35,000 feet, jolting passengers.

The accident took place when the jetliner flying above the Philippines, but the plane managed to land safely at Ngurah Rai Airport at about 4:05 pm (0605 GMT), said Dimyati, who like many Indonesians goes only by one name.

As soon as the plane touched down at the Ngurahi Rai Airport, the injured persons were rushed to Bali's Sanglah Hospital, he said, adding that two of them had broken bones.

There are few, if any, clear air turbulence in this region. However there is heavy turbulence associated with thunderstorm, Cb and TCu here, which usually can be seen in the weather radar. Anybody know the aircraft type?

Taiwanese plane hits turbulence, 30 injured

Central News Agency

2008-09-21 02:38 AM

Central News Agency A passenger plane owned by Taiwan-based China Airlines encountered turbulence on its way from Taipei to the Indonesian island of Bali Saturday, injuring 30 people.

Six of the injured, including four crew members, were admitted to a hospital in Bali for treatment after the plane touched down safely on that island , a spokesman of the carrier said in Taipei.

The other 24 injured were given first medical aid on board and left on their own after the plane arrived in Bali at 2.24 p.m.

The plane remained intact in the accident and had flown back to Taipei Saturday evening carrying another group of passengers, the spokesman said.

The four-year old Boeing 747-400 left Taoyuan Airport on 9.23 a.m, with 339 passengers and 19 crew members.

The incident took place two hours later when the plane was flying over Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, and the aircraft dropped several thousands feet, causing many passengers to hit their heads on the ceiling.

Now a report from DPS itself, and points to the Makassar Strait as the culprit. Two weekends ago on my KUL-UPG flight with AK, there was clear air turbulence all the way from Kalimantan to Makassar, but just normal bumps.

Turbulent landing for China flight

Dicky Christanto, The Jakarta Post, Denpasar

As many as 27 people, including passengers and flight crew, on-board a China Airlines Boeing 747-400 were injured when the aircraft hit turbulence over the Makassar straight on Saturday afternoon.

The plane, carrying 338 passengers, was en route to Denpasar from Taiwan when it entered a pocket of severe atmospheric instability, an official said.

The pilot managed to navigate the plane out of the difficult air currents and land the plane safely at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport.

The injured passengers were immediately taken to nearby hospitals, including the island's biggest medical emergency facility in Sanglah, some 15 kilometers north of the airport.

Mohammad Dimyati, spokesman for the airport's operator Angkasa Pura I, said the airport had been informed of the incident minutes after it had occurred. The airport's air traffic controllers then asked the plane's pilot whether special assistance was required.

The pilot responded that some passengers were injured and would need emergency medical assistance.

"Fortunately, the aircraft managed to land safely without suffering any damage, therefore we focused on providing medical assistance to the injured passengers," he told reporters Saturday.

He said the aircraft was ready to be used again. However, he said several members of the cabin crew remained hospitalized.

The injured passengers, most of whom are from mainland Taiwan and China, were being treated at several hospitals in Badung and Denpasar.

Indonesian passenger Dwi Hartati received treatment for minor injuries at a hospital near the airport.

The seriously injured were brought to Sanglah General Hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).

As of Saturday evening, as many as eight seriously injured people had been brought to the ICU. Most suffered multiple broken legs, wrists and vertebrae.

The seriously injured were identified as Cheng Yung Mei, Huang Yu Te, Jason Lao, Sarah Lin, Hsu Shih Chin, Huang Hui Min, Jong Dee, Chang Yi Cheh.

Chang Yi Cheh, one of the injured stewardesses, said it had been impossible to fight the turbulence, which left her with a swollen right leg.

"It was turbulence and it was so hard," Cheh said, clearly in pain.

The management of Sanglah General Hospital was not available for comment.

Lt. Col. Omar Faturohman, Commander of Ngurah Rai Military Air Base, who scrambled his men to assist the passengers, said he had asked several injured cabin crew members whether they had been wearing seat belts during the turbulence.

He said the crew members had put on their seat belts upon being warned of imminent turbulence by the pilots.

"As a pilot myself, I can't imagine how hard the turbulence was as it was able to throw someone who had put his seat belt on properly," he said.

"It is lucky that the aircraft was not affected by the turbulence."

Ngurah Rai's air traffic controllers issued a warning to all airliners flying over the Makassar Strait to take necessary precautions to avoid similar incident.

Wow , every report has their own story , this one more interesting apparently , with passengers experiencing zero G . Hit their heads on the ceiling , that is really interesting !

The passengers experienced Zero-G ??!! Their experience might be similar to the IL-76's Zero-G Flights in Moscow !

Seat belt is there for a reason. Most of the passengers will unbuckle once the seat belt sign is off. I always tell my other half to remain seated with seat belt even though its uncomfortable. Anyway safety is paramount.

Flight CI687 of China Airline yesterday morning suffered from sunny-air-turbulence and made 26 passengers and 4 flight attendants injured as leaving for Bali, Indonesia.

China Airlines pointed that this flight took off from Taiwan Taoyuan international airport and met the sunny-air-turbulence at 11:25 a.m. over Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The plane had shaken up and down 200 feet for 10 seconds. Many seriously injured passengers did not tie well the seat belts

Whats sunny air turbulence? Anyway I very much doubt that this region has clear air turb. Unless they wack into a big CB.

Didnt know that weather radar can detect clear air turbulence if it thats what sunny air turbulence mean.

So the incident happened when CI plane was over BKI. They should have made an emergency landing in BKI.

According to Taiwanese TV, the CAT occurred when meal trays are being collected, so that's why those injured included large numbers of cabin crew. According to crew interviewed, it came without warning...that they couldn't even react in time.

CI is paying for all medical/hospitalization expenses and follow-up treatment costs of injured passengers and crew.

These footage appeared on Taiwanese TV...injured crew including chief purser fractured his fore-arm while protecting a passenger from a runaway food-cart. The most seriously injured crew underwent surgery in Bali and is still hospitalized there.

CI sent a Medivac team to Bali for transporting back the most seriously injured passenger.

Denny, just wondering... if Taiwanese needs to pay for ambulance charges? Seems like the ambulance from the picture above belongs to an "ambulance" business entity.

Remember the incident involved a Dragonair A330-300 on its way back to HKG from BKI ? But that happened when it was in the Filipino airspace.
