Recommended Posts

SMS recieved from Dato' Capt Nawawi who piloted the inaugral Hajj flight from TGG.

Either Dato' Capt Nawawi landed at the wrong place or the Bernama reporter got it wrong. Go figure. I'm sure most of us knows who to trust more. :)

Bernama got it wrong then. But I think the batch of pilgrims went to Madinah after landing at Jeddah.

The flight could not land in TGG due to poor visibility. The situation was as I have warned and made aware to the TGG State Government, and is related to a non delivery of fully operational ILS. We have been promised the ILS during the planning stage but to date, the Glide Slope is not functioning, resulting in a higher minima and visibility limit.

With the Glide Slope functioning, the diversion would most certainly not have happened.

The plane diverted to KUL and returned to TGG after a 3 hour delay. With hard work by the Hajj team, the plane eventually arrived Jeddah with a delay of just one hour.

I was in JKT when this took place, handling the UN Indobatt Charter to Beirut.....but that's another story.

FIRST MALAYSIA AIRLINES' HAJJ CHARTER FLIGHT TAKES OFF FROM KUALA TERENGGANU

Kuala Terengganu (13 November 2008): Malaysia Airlines today commenced direct Hajj charter flights between Kuala Terengganu and Jeddah.

The inaugural flight MH8036, with 354 Hajj pilgrims departed Sultan Mahmood Airport Kuala Terengganu at 1200 hours today on a non-stop journey to Jeddah.

The Pemangku Raja Terengganu Tengku Muhammad Ismail, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said and Tabung Haji Chairman Tan Sri Abi Musa Asa'ari together with Malaysia Airlines' Executive Director/Chief Financial Officer Tengku Azmil Zahruddin as well as officials from both Tabung Haji and Malaysia Airports Berhad were on hand to send off the passengers of the inaugural flight.

"This historic occasion has been made possible through the commitment and co-operation of the airport and regulatory authorities who partnered with us for the success of our non-stop Hajj operations from Kuala Terengganu to Jeddah," said Tengku Azmil.

"From this year onwards, pilgrims in and around Terengganu can travel directly from Kuala Terengganu to the Holy Land for the hajj without any need to transit in KL International Airport for connecting flights to Saudi Arabia. Malaysia Airlines will also provide similar direct connections from the Holy Land to Kuala Terengganu for the comfort of the returning hajj passengers," he added.

Under phase I of this Hajj movement, Malaysia Airlines will operate a total of 8 non-stop flights from Kuala Terengganu to Jeddah till 25 November 2008. A similar number of direct flights will be operated by the national carrier under phase II from Jeddah to Kuala Terengganu between 26 December 2008 and 9 January 2009.

Malaysia Airlines is using its Boeing 747-400 passenger aircraft for the Haj operations. Each seat in these aircraft is fitted with a TV screen, providing passengers the choice to view video programmes specially selected for this service. Likewise passengers will enjoy six dedicated audio programmes ranging from classical instrumentals, Nasyid selections to Quranic verses during the flight.

A ‘Doa Musafir' will precede each flight departure and all flight safety demonstrations by the cabin staff will be done in Bahasa Malaysia for easy understanding by the passengers. There will be also inflight announcement of the time for reciting the "niat of ihram" (miqat) by the passengers.

A special menu for the passengers has been prepared with the approval of Tabung Haji and apart from the main meals, each passenger will be given snack packs for consumption whilst awaiting statutory clearance on arrival in Jeddah. In addition, there will be increased supply of mineral water and juices in-flight to ensure passengers do not experience dehydration during the air travel.

Thanks Captain, didn't know KT still w/out ILS. Kind of expecting this thing to happen isn't it, what with the monsoon season and all... but to still make it with an arrival delay of one hour is impressive. The plane really "pecut" (pedal to the metal).... :clapping:

First International Flight Lands At Terengganu Airport

KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines' flight MH8237 from Jeddah with 355 haj pilgrims landed safely at Sultan Mahmud Airport here today.

It was a historic occasion for both the national carrier and the airport as it was the first international passenger flight to land in this East Coast airport that was recently upgraded with facilities and support to handle international flight arrivals and departures.

Malaysia Airlines executive director/chief financial officer Tengku Datuk Azmil Zahruddin said: "On Nov 13 this year, we inaugurated Phase I of the haj operations at this airport with the departures of the first direct flight from Kuala Terengganu to Jeddah.

"We are equally pleased with the successful start of the flight arrivals for the Phase II of our haj operations this season at Sultan Mahmud Airport," he said a statement today.

He said the national carrier was proud to be part of the historic occassion which demonstrates the ability of the upgraded airport to operate international departures and arrivals.

"For the haj flights, we have a team of dedicated Malaysian Airlines' personnel to manage and operate this movement at all airports, including Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu, as this charter has unique regulatory requirements and is highly time-critical.

"This charter also enhances Malaysia's reputation of having the best haj movement, an arrangement which is highly regarded in the Muslim world," he said.

He said the national carrier was operating seven direct flights from Jeddah to Kuala Terengganu for Phase II of this year's haj season.

"In addition, it will also operate one direct flight MH8277 which will depart Madinah, Saudi Arabia, on Jan 7, 2009 and arrive in Kuala Terengganu on the next day," he said.

Malaysia Airlines introduced its first haj flight from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah on April 1, 1974 using a leased Boeing 707 aircraft.

By 1981, in response to increased demand, Malaysia Airlines switched to DC-10 aircraft to operate the haj services and in the following year, two Boeing 747 aircraft were leased for this service.

In 2002, Malaysia Airlines collaborated with Tabung Haji by operating 13 scheduled haj charter flights, uplifting more than 4,500 pilgrims for the first time out of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) since it shifted its home base to KLIA from Subang.

Since then, it has been Tabung Haji's preferred charter airlines for Malaysian pilgrims.
