ALL flights in and out of Tullamarine airport have been suspended after an engine problem with a departing Vietnam Airlines flight which caused spotfires on the runway. A spokeswoman for Melbourne airport said the fires stemmed from debris from the plane but dismissed reports on Twitter that the aircraft was on fire. The incident happened around 10.50am with ground staff in the process of clearing debris from the tarmac and towing the aircraft from the runway. She said flights were suspended temporarily and could not confirm when they would resume. “Everyone is fine, one of the departing aircraft had an issue with the engine,” she said. ”It has been disabled and we are focusing on getting operations back up and running. ”The aircraft is not on fire, but the debris has caused some small spotfires.” Passengers took to Twitter to vent their frustration, with one writing: “Stuck on runway at Melbourne airport reportedly after fire on another plane forced it to return. Currently clearing debris.”

KOTA KINABALU -- MASwings, the airline servicing Sabah and Sarawak, expects to launch the first phase of its BIMP-EAGA operations into Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia, by early near year. Chief executive officer, Datuk Capt Mohd Nawawi Awang said the foray into international destinations, would be another milestone in the airlines' history. It will, he added, pave the way for many more people to travel into Sabah and Sarawak while further intensifying tourist arrivals and business opportunities. "Hopefully, in the next few days, we will be getting the long awaited approval to operate into the BIMP-EAGA. KUALA LUMPUR -(Dow Jones)- AirAsia Bhd. (5099.KU), Southeast Asia's largest budget airline by fleet size, said Tuesday that it won't proceed with a proposed joint venture with VietJet Aviation JSC. Regulatory approval for VietJet to use AirAsia's brand across its commercial operations remains outstanding, AirAsia said in a stock exchange filing. As that condition is fundamental to the venture's success, the company has "decided to allow the joint venture to lapse with immediate effect." In February 2010, AirAsia said it had signed agreements with Sovico Holdings and a Vietnamese individual to buy 30% in VietJet and establish a low-cost airline in Vietnam based on its existing business.

Hi Reyneo, The fare around VND900k+ is considered promotion fare. It is not possible to be VND600k or below. The airport tax, fuel surcharge, VAT sums up already nearly VND400k. Usually, I paid around VND1.3mil + one way for VN flight. I seldom take Jetstar due to not reliable on timing unless first flight of the day. Sometimes, it even delay more than 3 hours. Worse case is flight cancel without compensation. Hi Kenneth, You paid USD100 for one way is the highest fare for HAN-SGN. Actually, you can purchase the ticket on the spot at the airport. For HAN-SGN v.v, it has many daily flights almost 1 hour 1 flight. HAN is Capital city and SGN is business hub. Therefore, this is the busiest route among domestic destination.

Those places airport authority doesn't give AK a choice of it. Either leave it or take it! I also hate those 'customer' so KIASU and AJI -AJO a lot! Without AK, those airport still can survive!

Tuesday, November 30, 2010 A Cathay Pacific flight made an emergency landing in Kazakhstan, central Asia, after a cabin pressurization fault. The Boeing 747 aircraft - with 306 passengers and 20 crew on board - landed safely at Karaganda airport. Flight CX270 was en route to Hong Kong from Amsterdam when it experienced "a fault in the cabin pressurization system" six hours into the flight on Sunday, the airline said yesterday. Oxygen masks were deployed and the flight was diverted to the nearest airport, which was Karaganda. The aircraft landed safely without incident some two hours after the problem was detected. RTHK said reports from Kazakhstan indicated the cabin of the aircraft lost pressure. The Civil Aviation Department was informed of the incident and the airline is now investigating the cause. A Cathay engineer was dispatched on a special flight to fix the technical problem. "Once done, the aircraft will be ferried back to Hong Kong," a spokesman said. The special flight will also bring back the passengers and crew and is expected to arrive in Hong Kong this morning. Cathay said the passengers spent four hours on the aircraft before they could deplane, due to delays in obtaining visa exemptions from the local Kazakhstan authorities.

Distressed plane lands in Singapore after debris found on island November 4, 2010 -- Updated 0529 GMT (1329 HKT) A Qantas plane that had one of its four engines shut down mid-flight landed safely in Singapore on Thursday morning, the airline said. The airline, in a statement, did not say whether debris that fell on the western Indonesian island of Batam was from the plane. Local television stations showed small amount of debris with red-white markings. Pictures of the Airbus 380 after it landed showed the cowling -- or the covering of the engine -- torn off in the back half. Earlier, Tatang Kurnia, the head of the country's Transport Safety Board, told Metro TV that debris fell of a plane headed to Singapore. But Qantas, Australia's national airline, would only confirm that a plane with 433 passengers and 26 crew members on board developed engine trouble in one of its four engines soon after takeoff. Flight QF32, en route to Sydney from Singapore, turned back and landed safely in Singapore's Changi Airport, the airline said. "Some media reports suggested the aircraft had crashed. These reports are incorrect. No Qantas aircraft has crashed," the airline said. Trifuadi, a security officer at an engineering firm in Batam, said he heard a loud explosion and saw smoke coming out of the engine of a plane flying overhead. Shortly afterward, debris fell from the plane to the ground, said Trifuadi, who like many Indonesians go by one name. Ulf Waschbusch, who was on his way to Australia for the first time, said the crew kept passengers apprised of what was happening. "We all stayed pretty calm," he told CNN. "It was an almost eerie calm." In August, a Qantas flight bound for Sydney from San Francisco, California, was forced to return to San Francisco after one of its engines developed mechanical problems, the airline said at the time. Malaysia Airlines marks a world first with new skyline interior The new livery on the MAS B737-800 that just arrived. KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Malaysia Airlines will become the first full-service airline to operate the B737-800 with the new Boeing skyline interior, the airline said today. The B737, which landed at Subang airport from Seattle in the United States today, also sports the new livery which projects a new and more dynamic image for the airline. The skyline interior is similar in concept to the one that will be installed in the B787 Dreamliner. It features dramatically higher ceilings and eight-palette mood lighting aimed at enhancing passenger comfort. The sculpted sidewalls are also more concave, giving the feeling of a wide-body cabin in the narrow-body plane. The new upswept design of the livery also marks the start of a new image for the national carrier. “We wanted a new livery as it marks a change,” said Malaysia Airlines CEO Tengku Azmil. “We wanted to visually represent the airline going from traditional to dynamic with the more flowing lines.” The new Boeing Skyline interior. He said the airline was not allowed to disclose the price the airline paid for the plane but said that the list price is about US$70 million (RM217 million). Malaysia Airlines has ordered up to 55 B737-800s, all of which will have the skyline interior. The aircraft, which has a six-hour flight range, has 9-10.6-inch LCD screens for inflight entertainment in every seat as well as laptop and USB chargers. It can fly at 41,000 feet as opposed to the older model which could only fly at 37,000 feet, which means less turbulence. The more powerful engines and better aerodynamics allow the plane to travel at .78 Mach (speed of sound) as opposed .74 Mach previously. The plane’s inaugural flight will be on November 15 when it flies from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

Berjaya Group (BGroup), a property and gaming outfit, may exit the aviation business as it is in talks with investors to dispose of Berjaya Air. Industry sources said BGroup's controlling stakeholder Tan Sri Vincent Tan is talking to a few local and foreign parties including one from Indonesia. Berjaya Air general manager Tan Bee Hock told Business Times that he is not aware of any plans by (Vincent) Tan to sell the aviation business The sources, however, claimed an Indonesian tycoon, who runs several businesses in Malaysia, has expressed an interest to buy the airline. "Berjaya Air, although it complements Berjaya Group's hotels and resorts, is not making as much money. Tan is considering selling the business if there is a good offer," the source said. It is understood that Tan is looking at offers above RM150 million. Tan declined to respond to Business Times queries. Berjaya Air began operations in 1989. It is owned by the BGroup via Berjaya Land Bhd, and was formerly known as Pacific Air Charter. The airline is not earning enough although it flies to a few destinations like Pangkor, Tioman and Redang island, and Koh Samui in Thailand, from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor. It also flies to Seletar airport in Singapore from Tioman and Redang. On May 3, all flights to Pangkor were ceased after a decade of air services to the island as the route was not profitable, BGroup had said in a statement. BGroup also is worried that aircraft maintenance for its 48-seater Dash 7s will get more difficult as Bombardier is no longer producing the spare parts. Currently, only the Dash 7s can service most of the routes that Berjaya Air flies to because of the runway length. Berjaya Air currently operates two ATR 72-500 and three Dash 7s. One Dash 7 is under scheduled maintenance. The ATRs are part of the four turboprop planes which Berjaya Air had ordered in 2007 for RM255 million, from southern France-based regional aircraft maker, Avions De Transport Regional. The other two ATRs have not taken delivery. Berjaya Air's Tan Bee Hock said the company has yet to decide if it wants to exercise the option to buy the two remaining ATRs.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Qatar Airways aircraft enroute from Manila to Doha made an emergency landing at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Wednesday, after one of its pilots died of a heart attack mid-air. A spokesman for the airways said the pilot, a 43-year-old Indian national, complained of chest pains and the co-pilot requested to land at KLIA around 11.30am. "The plane, an A330 Airbus with about 250 passengers on board, landed here while a medical team was on standby. "The pilot was pronounced dead and the airlines took immediate steps and changed the entire crew before the aircraft took off at 1.15pm," he said. Sepang police chief Supt Zahedi Ayub, when contacted, said the pilot's body was taken to the Serdang Hospital for a post mortem and the results showed that he had died of heart failure.

A jet bridge at the second terminal of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport collapsed Monday afternoon, but no injuries were reported. Authorities said the cause is still being investigated. The collapse took place at 1: 24 p.m. at boarding gate D6 of the second terminal, while airport staff were preparing to receive 30 business class passengers arriving from Singapore on flight SQ876. The jet bridge -- a walkway that connects aircraft to the airport -- was scheduled for maintenance the same morning after one of its motors malfunctioned. A South Korean company sold the bridge to the airport for NT$10 million (US$312,000) in 2005. Chang Tie-yuan, the deputy director of the airport, said Monday afternoon that the cause of the collapse was still unknown and that the maintenance department will conduct an overall inspection of all the airport's jet bridges. "The collapse will have virtually no impact on the operation of the airport, " he said. "We have shut down the boarding gate but no flights will be delayed due to the closure." This is the first time that a jet bridge has toppled at the airport, which was originally named Chiang Kai-shek International Airport. It opened in 1979 and the second terminal was added in 2000. Earlier this month, Minister of Transportation and Communications Mao Chi-kuo announced that construction for a third terminal will begin later this year as part of the Airport Zone project. In a briefing with President Ma Ying-jeou, Mao said the goal is to turn the airport into a transportation hub for Northeast Asia. According to the Airport Council International's (AIC) 2009 Airport Service Quality Survey, the airport fell to 27th place, a sharp decline from the previous year's 18th place. The government has recently approved a NT$10.7 billion airport renovation project.

SkyTeam said on its website that Vietnam Airlines and Tarom were on track to become members in June. “At the moment, both airlines are audited and need to demonstrate fulfillment and understanding of the requirements to deliver the SkyTeam customer service standards. Both airlines are well on track to pass the audit successfully.” A team of SkyTeam member airlines is guiding the two airlines through more than 100 membership requirements for technical communication links, recognition of frequent flyer programs, lounge access and priority baggage handling. SkyTeam was formed in 2000. Its members transport 384 million passengers every year, have 116 million frequent flyer members and more than 415 lounges at airports worldwide. Vietnam Airlines is expected to officiate a joining ceremony in Hanoi on June 10 after the SkyTeam governing board has approved its membership.
