  1. Sounds like London Luton. On a cold, rainy day, and you managed to get the 99p (plus tax) ticket on Easyjet because it is the 5.45am flight and have to walk to the plane... Yay... Maybe KLIA will provide umbrellas in case it rains, like the old days at Subang!
  2. I know Tengku Azmil from my primary school and he was my brother's classmate. Strange to get someone in my age group running an airline... maybe I should just admit that I am old. I don't know how he is now - have not seen him for 20 years. Anyway, the dude's been living a long time in England and also Hong Kong, and he loves to travel. So he is one of the people who has seen how things work overseas, the good the bad and the ugly. Let's see how he does.
  3. We shouldn't let this fantastic work go to waste - send it! send it! And good timing too... Merdeka Day is around the corner!
  4. I heard that Virgin wanted to fly via HKG because it is the shortest route to Australia - I know this sounds weird but apparently the world is not flat and maybe someone knows the great circle map thingie and can check? Between 1999- 2003 I was doing a lot of Europe - South East Asia business trips and I really wanted to fly via KLIA but when I look at flight connections I had no choice but to go mostly via SIN and sometimes BKK. SQ provides so many connections to a lot of cities in the region that it is just a lot more convenient to fly via SIN. If I had to fly via KLIA... I would need to spend hours on transit and unfortunately, KLIA has not much "entertainment" to offer to transit passengers compared to Changi. So to me it is pretty basic - SQ has a strong network in the region so you have a decent transit time in SIN. Even if you do have to spend more time than you would like on transit, Changi is one of the best airports to be stuck in. The combination of this means strong passenger growth, thus attracting more airlines over there, thus improving flight connections, etc. etc.. And I know a lot of people here in Switzerland who would like to fly MH to Asia/Australia for holidays (economy class), but MH only flies 3 times a week from ZRH. TG and SQ fly daily. How to fly MH when your holiday plans are so inflexible because of the lack of flights?
  5. Widebody - MH777. (actually any tripple with 2-5-2 sitting) Been on 343, 342, 333, 332... but I just prefer the 777! Single aisle - must say I prefer the A320 over the B737, but B757 is the best! I used to love the B727. Feels like sitting in a sports car. Then last year I was on an AeroContinente B727, after which, I am happy to be on the ground
  6. Swissair MD-11, JNB-ZRH, Sept. 1998. I was a bit nervous because it is only a few weeks after the Swissair crash in Halifax. They announced that there would be no inflight entertainment system - as if to remind us why we should be nervous (rumours were that the IFE caused a fire). Pre-takeoff delay because there was a thunderstorm at the airport. I thought, come-on lah... in Malaysia I always see planes taking off and landing in thunderstorms... After one hour, the rain stopped so we took off. I think only about 2 to 3 minutes after the long take off roll (JNB is around 6000ft asl), the plane started shaking violently, and then we dropped for a few seconds, I mean, I felt like zero-G and my seat belt was keeping me in my seat. I think the drop lasted 3 to 5 seconds maybe and then we suddenly stopped dropping, as if the plane caught some air again, and I was pushed quite hard into my seat. What was really scary is the sound of the air frame bending when we stopped dropping... A huge groan, and I was scared that the wing would snap. You could here it on top of all the screaming people. Then the plane levelled off, picked up speed and continued to climb and we made it to Zurich without further drama. After that experience I was a bit scared last year when I was flying MIA-ZRH on a Swiss A332, 6 hours before Hurrican Jeanne landed on Florida. It was the last flight out of Miami, and you could see baggage flying off carts because of the wind. Luckily, I think we took off against the wind, plane was almost empty and it was definitely the fastest takeoff I have ever experienced (wonder if Alex Kueh can create a picture of this takeoff for me ?). In the end, it was actually a normal flight. Landing in London City is also interesting in bad weather. Steep angle of attack, short runway.... . In good weather, it is really fun. In bad weather.. oh god...
  7. I recall watching the news of the unveiling of the new scheme on TV. The reason they changed from Malaysian to Malaysia was because they wanted to promote "Malaysia". Apparently at that time people were not sure what country "Malaysian" refers to... is it Malaya or what? In the 80s, I think a lot of people didn't know that there is a country called Malaysia. (I suppose we made progress in the 90s and now people know there is such a country although they don't know where it is) I thought this was very strange... in the end I think most foreigners, i.e., the target of this change, thought that it is very strange grammar to call it Malaysia Airlines and not Malaysian airlines.
  8. I don't have all the details so please excuse me if I am wrong - I am surprised that Singapore won't give Air Asia access to Changi (or bus service to Senai), but Malaysia gives access to Singapore Airlines so easily? Seems like Malaysia's negotiation skills are a bit weak. Shouldn't this agreement be a bargaining chip for Air Asia's efforts to break into Singapore?
  9. It was always expensive ever since its first flight (although neither airline would reveal this in their financial reporting)yet BA and AF flew it for a long time. This is what is known as "concorde economics" - as Billions was spent developing the concorde, BA and AF decided that they might as well use it. Development costs has already been sunk, but operating costs could be justified by savings in advertising costs - the concorde in itself is a very good advertisement. I believe that the paris air crash raised a lot of questions about safety, and of course, people then questioned the economics. But I heard somewhere that the British authorities made it known that they would probably deny the next renewal of the flight certificate for the concorde... so this prompted the retirement of the concorde? Not too sure about this, maybe this rings a bell?
