  1. Does the Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines partnership clear the runway for a future merger?

Malaysia’s struggling flagship carrier has unexpectedly agreed to explore a partnership with its fierce Singaporean competitor

While there has been resistance against a future merger on grounds of national pride, some analysts say such an alliance makes good business sense

Does anyone see this as another AF-KL or BA-IB to create a megahub ala AMS-CDG or LON-MAD?

Despite the mergers, all 4 airlines above retain their identity as flag carriers.

Well...well.. I think I had said about this half a decade ago

  2. So is that a hint of regret?

I have to say, yes it is but not shown on surface. Because back then, I think they were modelling themselves after Pan Am. Now, they are looking up for American Airlines.

Since MH does not have an LCC, why not get Scoot to open up a hub in Malaysia? Or Firefly go back to Changi? Interesting permutations.

It would be great if there would be Firefly jet or Scoot Malaysia based on KLIA2 but nothing avail yet as the time we speak!

  3. Any wonder? Kiasus will be kiasus...

Goh Choon Phong, the SIA CEO had lining up the importance of domestic market; which not within SQ tap..

Remember, Scoot expands aggresively, they even fly to KBR this year... though not sure how it would last... the fare is competitive tho... considering no lay over via KUL

  4. Are other oneworld FFPs in this region worth considering, such as QF, CX or JL?

Miles earn are pretty much standard across the partners but it is the redemption that matters

QF is a NO go as the miles redemption are sky-rocketing high

CX FFP divided by Asia Miles + Marco Polo. Asia Miles is for earning and redeeming miles. The miles redemption are attractive but the programme itself doesn't come with Elite Status. Here where you need to also apply for Marco Polo Club. However, you have to aware of the annual fees of US$ 100.Nonetheless, it can be waived after you earn 100 pts for Marco Polo.

JL Mileage Bank is the best way to redeem but painful for most credit card holders to accrue miles as non-JAL credit cards are not accepted and only AEON cards from Japan qualify to earn miles. But if you are a frequent flyers on OneWorld, you can take a look on it as they are more or less require same value of miles as CX only without a seperated Elite status programme.

  5. So if we want klia to be a bigger LCC hub, maybe the ministry could consider giving operating licences to Nok or Tigerair to set-up local units in M'sia so that they can also operate domestically, amongst others. That would make Airasia "happy" that it no longer has a monopoly on the local LCC scene. And maybe we will have less drama-queen antics from the Red one.

Actually looking forward for that kind of competition too. My two cents worth...

  6. I think it is 9M-MNF.

Well SQ A380s also experienced similar or worse turbulence than this. Strange that smaller planes don't seem to be involved!

Nope. Actually the smaller A332 also face the same thing. Remember the flight EY 474 to CGK roughly a month ago? And all these come to the Question. How well the Airbuses metals could handle the turbulence compared to Boeing's? Especially with those 777s ... I think I read it somewhere in Capt Lim's blog about this matter.

  7. I think they hedged their bets by signing an option for two A330-900s. These might be used for the AKL and/or their other EU routes should the A350s be deployed for LHR.

Latest reports indicate that MAB are studying the need for more A350s - so lets see what news will emerge in the near future.

I thought the A330neo itself could already fly nonstop to LHR eh?
