D7 in particular have gone from having a solid consistent product to a mish mash of interiors and configurations. I watched a recent YouTube video and those ex PR birds, still have Phillipine Airlines logo on the FA display screen near L1!

When D7 began, it was run by aviation professionals who listened to feedback from customers. Fleet planning was better and aircraft followed traditional aviation norms like having names. Unfortunately, doing all that is too costly for the LCC and irrational competition caused massive losses. The KO punch was Covid-19.

Nowadays, the bean counters are in charge and some credit has to be given to them for keeping D7 afloat. However, a heavy price was paid and D7 no longer has its original identity. Hopefully the higher fares they are charging now will help them recover their former glory.

It makes me wonder have they done the proper business case study, especially for project this scale. Hope not another white elephant in making.

Based on pax traffic, only PEN and BKI expansions are justified.

Is the old KUA airport to become a military base or is it going to be taken over by some greedy developer?

Not helped by them pulling the plug on MYY-SIN and SBW-SIN services 😑

But how much this AirAsia 'plan' been sparked by ongoing Sarawak's 'boutique' airline programme and negotiations for takeover of MasWings .....

No wonder he has dedicated a special livery aircraft for Sabah - they came to Airasia's aid in times of need whereas others just wash their hands. Sarawak didn't offer much help to them during Covid-19 lockdown - so they will need to make decisions based on the business case.

It can do 8-9hours(which usually is a 1meal with options plus 1 snack/pie type of serving). Full Galley reconfiguration can fix this but judging how cash sensitive MH is they're unlikely to do this.

As for Thai they're gearing to modify theirs middle of next year.

Well if they mod the galley, they will lose pax seating. But if they want to standardise the fleet, they need to do it. I guess it depends on their network requirements. I think it is probably better to get brand new builds if they plan to fly the aircraft to other European cities. Their new build standard is more efficient and can carry higher payloads too.

Malaysia Airlines has stated two years ago they would not be taking any of the China NTU as they are built to each Mainland China airline's specification. Malaysia Airlines prefers their own custom built B737 MAX.

China NTUs (About 140 of them) have mostly reassigned to United, Alaska, Air India Express (55 units), GOL Brasilia and some other smaller airlines.

Do you think these airlines asked Boeing to rework the cabin? With big orders from United and Air India Express, it may be feasible to do the mods to the airline's requirements.

All these frames customised by other carriers often brings headache.

Heard for 9M-MAH a lot of stuff the way SAS configures behind the scenes made the plane too redundant for long haul. The good side it has a superior seat product for passengers lol.

Among some of the issues was the misplacement of safety and medical equipment, insufficient dedicated cabin crew seats(airline has to block seats on economy so that the crew can sit on it for take off and landing, Insufficient galley food storage that the aircraft can only serve 1 meal with options and 1 snack course cant serve 2 full meals effectively crossing out potentials for LHR/AKL. Aircraft also seems to have lower Max take off weight.

Similar headaches were also faced by Thai airways with their acquisition for the used a350s. If i am not mistaken SAS 6 hour flights or less are BOB, for long haul its only 1 choice complimentary meals hence they customised the planes with less food storage. These european carriers often simply configured their aircrafts like rojak to save some buck and operates almost no frills like. Same issue when MH took the 6 ex air berlin a330-200. All 6 were differently configured LOL.

So it looks like without modification to MH's standard cabin, 9M-MAH will be confined to serving routes up to around 7 hours. So the runs to NRT and MEL are optimal for this aircraft. DOH might be stretching it to its limits.

I would’ve thought Penang-Perth-Penang would be a higher priority than direct flights to KCH!

Having just returned from Penang, the amount of pax that transferred onto the same connecting Scoot flight at Changi was noticeable. As a regular visitor to PG, there was plenty of Aussie tourists in Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi on this trip.

Also, just out of interest what’s the current longest AK flight in terms of flight time?

I think there is some political pressure from Sarawak politicians lately. They blame the lack of direct flights into KCH for their poor tourism arrivals!

Penang has a big problem - insufficient airport capacity.

CFM leap still not coming in. A waste of opportunity actually.

I think they are waiting for the A225 because they do not have lower thrust versions to compete with PW. To scale down the fan might not be optimal and there needs to be some modifications to the core too. Otherwise, fuel burn may not be as good. With a A225, I think they can port over LEAP-1B with minor modifications.

From what was reported, it seems like ANZ enjoys premium yield for MH. I don't know if it's the same for D7. But apparently premium yield for MH is not sufficient enough for QF. Demand has always been there. We are almost always maxing out on the seat capacity for our Australia flights. But I assume the competition to entry is quite high for QF - they have to fight MH for premium traffic, D7 for the cheap tickets, and OD - no idea what OD target market is.

Aussie consumers are savvy and QF is still suffering from reputational damage in their home market. I recall that some domestic air fares are way too high - to fly from SYD to PER is more expensive on Aussie airlines than it is to do SYD-KUL-PER on D7! I guess QF needs super yields due to their high cost base and airlines like MH can comfortably live with those kinds of yields as they operate from a lower cost base.

I guess it is the same with AF - French unions are very strong and they may also have an elevated cost base. Let's hope that Condor returns one day - it would be nice to see what their A339s are like!

I feel the same too. Even JQ flies to SGN and HKT, but not KUL.

JQ flew to KUL for a short period of time but I think they were not happy with the route's performance.

The funny thing is that D7 seems to be doing better than them on Malaysia to Australia routes. So the demand is there - just that the Aussie carriers seem to find it difficult to get their business.

Only issue now it seems the songket wau coming in will probably overwrite the current scheme. Even though both are negaraku the wau logo's are very different so as the company name font styling.

Perhaps the songket wau livery should only be used on factory fresh aircraft, i.e. the B737 Max and the A330 Neo. Secondhand A350s should have the same livery as the existing A350s.

Fulamaaak… Algiers now! Never thought it would ever happen. looks like a seasonal route.

all we need is Teheran, Almaty (air Asia now trying to block air Astana by starting earlier!), Amman, Baghdad, (LAX/SFO one can dream)… and maybe at least one of either Paris, Frankfurt or Rome!

The closest Air Algeria came to Malaysia was leasing D7 planes! Lets see if the flights next year will really operate.

Mahan Air stopped flying from Tehran because of fuel supply issues in KUL due to compliance with sanctions. Royal Jordanian might restore their tag on from BKK if they have sufficient aircraft. We already have Kuwait Airways and Iraqi might return. EU - highly doubtful that Air France and Lufthansa will return but Ita might be interested once they have finished building their core network.

MVD delivery slightly delayed to dec4th. Passengers who booked with the original intention to try them out on the Miri and 3rd daily KK flight on dec 4th are unlikely to experience the aircraft. Also it seems MVB may be coming in this late dec though still no photographs from any spotters at Renton.

MVD made a flight today: https://www.flightaware.com/live/flight/9MMVD

Is this the beginning of the delivery process?

  13. Cathay favouring Airbus for widely watched freighter deal - sources

Nov 27 (Reuters) - Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd (0293.HK) is leaning towards placing an order for around six Airbus (AIR.PA) A350 freighters as the Hong Kong carrier renews the oldest section of its fleet of dedicated 747 cargo jets, industry sources said.

If confirmed, the selection marks a bounce back for the Airbus wide-body freighter after Cathay earlier this year appeared to favour the competing Boeing (BA.N) 777-8F, before postponing a decision for several months, said the sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential matters.

The other 5 frames would probably be in queue for the long maintenance process as well. Looks like the airline would be operating 6 a350 for many months if thats the case even with MAH delivered. In the end still 350 constrained lol.

I wonder what happens to the lease payments when this kind of Aog happens?
