I am actually glad that MAG management has to face up to this embarrassing scrutiny before MH suffers another air crash. Far too often, in GLCs, there isn't much of a consequence for failure. Now, MAG is under close scrutiny from inside and outside the aviation industry - that is a good thing.
-
In GLCs, there are usually no consequences for non performing staff. They are just put on cold storage - and they still makan gaji buta! I would say that their current problems go further than the past two or three years. Their panic retirement of their Boeing 777s and A380s without a clear replacement strategy has resulted in a crippled network and insufficient aircraft for expansion. It is good that their failure to manage the business is now highlighted.

AirAsia X 2Q net profit down 13% amid weak travel season KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Medium-haul low-cost carrier AirAsia X Bhd (KL:AAX) reported a 13% fall in net profit for the second quarter ended June 30, 2024 (2QFY2024) to RM4.82 million from RM5.54 million a year earlier, on lesser travels due to the traditionally weaker travel season. This led to a lower earnings per share of 1.1 sen for 2QFY2024 compared with 1.2 sen for 2QFY2023. Net profit for 2QFY2024 was also down 94% from the RM80.12 million recorded in 1QFY2024, due to a 26% quarter-on-quarter decrease in revenue as average passenger fare was lower by 30% while ancillary revenue dropped 10%. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) comparison, however, AAX's quarterly revenue rose 30.5% to RM669.14 million in 2QFY2024, from RM512.91 million in 2QFY2023, on higher ticket sales and ancillary revenue. In a statement on Wednesday, AAX said it saw the number of passengers carried rise 42% y-o-y to over 880,000 passengers, surpassing the 30% y-o-y growth in seat capacity. Ancillary revenue also increased over 48% y-o-y to RM218.2 million, in line with the increase in the number of passengers carried and buoyed by ancillary revenue per passenger increasing by 5% y-o-y to RM248 per passenger. I would like to add that if the change affects bookings on connecting flights (even on third party airlines), the airline will also rebook you on a different flight to preserve the connection - FOC. MH must revise its service recovery SOPs as a matter of urgency.
-
Government does not do accounting on a going concern basis. They only look at things one year by one year.
-
They should deploy the Max on their 5-6 hour sectors as a partial solution to the loss of their widebodies. Stop using them for domestic and short flights.
-
I think that forcing them to rebook you on alternative flight is the best answer as a refund will be their way out of the contract. Besides, if you have to book it yourself, it is likely to cost more.
-
We don't even need to look as far as Japan - just take a look down south, at Singapore. Things like what is happening at MH will simply not happen at SQ. CAAM/MAVCOM and MOT is again failing the industry. All these people only care about their fat pay cheques and nothing else!
-
It is good to see that the poor management decisions had severe consequences. Yet, they still blame supply chain issues when these have been going on for some time already. It shows that they have not mitigated the problems and are now rightly suffering the consequences of their inaction. I am so glad I did not book my long haul flights with MH this year.
-
Now, he is very clever to talk. What did he do for MAS when he was the Minister in charge?
-
Looks like MAG and Malaysia needs an air crash investigation to wake up. Its been 10 years since those twin disasters. Pray hard that this does not happen again and that they wake up before another air crash.
-
Maybe MH should just lease 4 to 6 engines and keep them as spare.
-
I hope that the PW engines are not starting to be hanger queens as they get older!
-
These news reports highlights our previous discussions on incompetent top management at MAG. What a shame that this company has gone deeper into the sewer.

Malaysia Airlines mulling Airbus, Boeing options for next aircraft purchase https://www.nst.com.my/business/corporate/2024/08/1091243/malaysia-airlines-mulling-airbus-boeing-options-next-aircraft

I think that those routes are more economically served by ATR72s. Just get some new ones so that they are more reliable.
-
Well, I really feel sorry for those in daily operations - so much acrobatics to perform juggling all the operational issues. It is amazing the airline hasn't ground to a halt!
-
Looking at the list of problems with the widebody fleet, MAG is shown up badly as a poor fleet planner. When your fleet is ageing, it is only natural that there will be more maintenance required and more unscheduled breakdowns occur. The lack of new aircraft replacing these old workhorses and the lack of spare aircraft to deploy makes a dent in MH's reputation for reliability. Khazanah is also to be blamed to some extent - it is drip feeding MAG's funding needs and did not provide sufficient CAPEX budgets to sustain the company long term. Lets hope that MAG improves on its strategic planning once a new CEO comes in. MAG is beginning to look like another KTM!

Cathay Group orders the A330neo Toulouse, 7 August 2024 - Hong Kong’s Cathay Group has placed a firm order with Airbus for 30 A330-900 widebody aircraft. The order follows a thorough evaluation by the airline under its mid-size widebody fleet renewal programme. The newly-ordered aircraft will enable Cathay to modernise its earlier generation A330-300 fleet and expand its operations on high capacity regional routes. The aircraft will also offer flexibility to serve longer range destinations. As with all A330neo aircraft, the fleet will be powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2024-08-cathay-group-orders-the-a330neo

So sad to see such poor service recovery - they should have put the pax on their partner airline's (QR) flights once they realised that the fix was going to take some time.
-
It is surprising that he could last so long - if you are an aviation industry professional, you would have quit MAG long ago because there is no long term strategy for the company. They are living from hand to mouth and even after they are turned around, the shareholders forgot to put some funds into development and growth. They are still running at tickover speed. The two airlines that came from the same DNA, MAG and SIA, have very different futures. One has little to no future and the other has a bright future. I think we can guess which is which!
