  1. Yeay OZ BI is cheap especially on the hopping mad route.

RBA fares is always cheaper comparable to the regional airlines. With the soon to be in the fleets B777-300ERs, MH will certainly loose some of the market shares from east Malaysia here. For the past few years, passengers who are price sensitive have choosen to fly RBA to LHR, HKG and etc.

  2. And what they need is the 350 or 787

Joe and Jane will for sure notice an old plane because of the very run down interior. But given new looking interior and IFE, they will notice the new plane. Whether that plane is an Airbus or 350, I think they would not notice.

From the airline point of view, didn't someone mention that refurbishing those old 330s would cost almost as much as buying the new 330s?

I don't want to defend MH's decision. But I believe in striking a balance between passenger needs and business needs. Improvements for passengers must be tangible,i.e., new looking cabins (i.e., fresh upholstery, no coffee stains on the carpets) largish IFE screen, fancy looking remotes. This can be done by updating the interiors every few years, or when the price is right, buying a new aircraft.

I used to deal with Virgin regularly (the airline :D ) in my job. Even met with Sir Richard once as he was hanging out in the CFOs office before my meeting. They told me that there is only so much they can do in the air because the more things they add like bars and massage stools, the less real estate they will have (less space for seats). So in the end, their cabins look like any other good airline's cabin. However, they spend a lot of money on their lounges as the benefit per square feet of space is just so much better. So their strategy is - buy aircraft only as needed and with the best cost, spend money to have the best lounges, not so much money on cabins (to be above average but not the best), and lots of marketing to make people think that their cabins are the best. Marketing their cabins as the best is less expensive than actually making their seats the best!

  3. Businessman sues BA 'for treating men like perverts'

Mirko Fischer claims BA brand all men as potential sex offenders

A businessman is suing British Airways over a policy that bans male passengers from sitting next to children they don't know - even if the child's parents are on the same flight.

Mirko Fischer has accused the airline of branding all men as potential sex offenders and says innocent travellers are being publicly humiliated.

In line with the policy, BA cabin crew patrol the aisles before take-off checking that youngsters travelling on their own or in a different row from their parents are not next to a male stranger.

If they find a man next to a child or teenager they will ask him to move to a different seat. The aircraft will not take off unless the passenger obeys.

Mr Fischer, a 33-year-old hedge fund manager, became aware of the policy while he was flying from Gatwick with his wife Stephanie, 30.

His wife, who was six months pregnant, had booked a window seat which she thought would be more spacious. Mr Fischer was in the middle seat between her and a 12-year-old boy.

Shortly after all passengers had sat down, having stowed their bags in the overhead lockers, a male steward asked Mr Fischer to change his seat.

Mr Fischer refused, explaining that his wife was pregnant, at which point the steward raised his voice, causing several passengers to turn round in alarm. He warned that the aircraft could not take off unless Mr Fischer obeyed.

Mr Fischer eventually moved seats but felt so humiliated by his treatment that he is taking the airline to court on the grounds of sex discrimination-He is paying all his own legal

If he wins at the hearing next month at Slough County Court, BA will have to change its policy.

He has promised to donate any compensation to the NSPCC.

Mr Fischer, who lives in Luxembourg with his wife and their daughter Sophia, said: 'This policy is branding all men as perverts for no reason. The policy and the treatment of male passengers is absolutely outrageous.

'A plane is a public place - cabin crew regularly walk down the aisles and passengers are sat so close to each other. The risk of any abuse is virtually zero.

'Furthermore statistically children are far more likely to be abused by a member of their family. Does that mean that BA are going to ban children sitting next to their own parents?'

'I was made to feel like a criminal in front of other passengers. It was totally humiliating. Neither myself or my wife dared to speak to the boy in case the cabin crew forced us from our seats. The poor child must have thought we were extremely rude and unfriendly.'

Claude Knights, of the children's charity Kidscape said: 'The airline should have procedures in place to avoid this sort of situation.

'If the airline is that concerned they should sit unaccompanied children with cabin crew who have no doubt been thoroughly vetted.'

A BA spokesman said: 'As this is case is subject to court proceedings, it would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time.'

What if Iris Robinson was sitting next to a teenager

It is a shame now when when people go to security at airports especially the US they get special treatment if they are muslim/arab. It's a shame bush is saying all arabs are terroists.

  4. What are you talking about the average joe will notice the difference for ex. mood lighting, no shades, dimmed windows. etc.. these are avaliable on the 787 not on the 330 and the passenger will notice as probaly SQ will advertise the 787's while MH will advertise anicent technology, even BI has 787's on order. Why is MH is not buying 739's if the 330's are toobig or lease 757's

I think the average passenger will not notice the difference between A333, A350 or 787. Perhaps right now a lot of people want to fly on the A380, but I don't think anyone would go out of their way to choose to fly the 787 over the A333.

Last month I traveled with my wife and her mother on SQ - we got off the 77W in Changi and hopped onto the A333. On the way back we got an older 772 to SIN and I remarked that this is an older plane. It was only then they realized it. Then my wife said the other plane was better. Which other plane, I asked. She goes huh? They are different? She didn't even notice the seat arrangements were different.

A380 would be the exception. Already people here in Switzerland are buzzing about the reports int he newspapers about the new seats and cabins in the A380. What... ? The 77W has been flying here for 3 years now and it has the same seats!

So what if Air Asia advertises their "new A350". MH can also advertise their new "airbus". My wife certainly would not know the difference. If at all, she would notice the different cabins and AirAsia's cramped cabins will not be to her liking.

  5. Leasing 757/767 or Buy 739er or 321

Since we have established that with MH 734/A333/772 could not offer frequency to many destinations, and aircraft is either too big or too small on some regional routes. How could MH attract high yield pax, more market share and be profitable?

Like most business, decision made today may take years to bear fruits. In this challenging and ever changing environment, anticipation of future is critical to business survival. If decision is based on past experience and current environment, current business model is most likely will not compatible and profitable in the future.

  6. Yeah the Myvi is probly going to be for 10 years without ESP or decient bags.

FLEE WHY CAN CHINA EASTERN GET THERES BY 2014?

Exactly, that's the point but MH is moving back in time. Let's not be surprise since this is Malaysia, everything seems slow. Let's start with our national car, one model last for than 10 years. Sad to say that, some Malaysian are now willing to accept suggestion from other parties, they view such thing as criticism and not willing to listen.

  7. More like the movie series Back To The Future, If we are talking Airbus compensation why no 350

Exactly, that's the point but MH is moving back in time. Let's not be surprise since this is Malaysia, everything seems slow. Let's start with our national car, one model last for than 10 years. 8. THIS DOES NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION! So woudn't MH get discount if they order 350-800 which is close to the 787-9 It's better to move foward than to fly back in time.

I believe that some compensation from Airbus for the A380 delays is involved - so this A333 deal could have saved MH a ton of money. That will be good for the bottom line!

But if its like QF that cancelled their 15 787's they can jump in

Guess it's possible but one would think that they will need to pay more to get early slots at such a late time. Otherwise it won't be fair to other airlines who committed early.

  9. Than why can CHina Eastern is able to get there's by 2014? The 330 is a tempoary situation MH needs the 787 soon as a airline cancels MH take it, because this could me early slots and better brand, I am suprised the did not take the QF bunch that were canceled.

I agree, MH is only looking at stuff that have reached "emergency" status! They cannot possible postpone the A330 fleet renewal order any more. It is fortunate that Airbus had some delivery slots for 2011 available for them! I think that for the B772 renewal they have already started by buying the newest aircraft from PNB. They now have to decide on what mix of A380/B772/B787/A350 they need. Lets hope that they will make more orders this year and not wait till those old planes fall apart!

  10. This is the aviation industry, not the car industry the it actually takes 7 years to build the e-class. E stands for fuel injected in german

In car industry, to develop new car model (e.g. Merc W212) or engine, takes over 1000 engineers 3+ years of development and testing. Engineers will try to improve the performance, efficiency, etc by introducing innovation and 10% to 15% improvement is considered significant. Like all engineering projects, there is always risk like under performance, maintenance, etc but engineers will solve or mitigate them, and so far, none of the new model is worst off than previous model.

If customers don’t wish to take engineering risk associate with W212 can always buy older model like W211 and W210. If overall ownership cost is the only criteria then the everlasting W123 model is the choice.

In Germany, many taxi companies operate Merc E-class. W212 is launched in 2009, if a taxi company just bought a fleet of W211 in 2009. When can this company replace 2009 W211 economically?

Since the taxi fare is the same and given the choice, will pax prefer to ride in W212 or W210 model? Which taxi company makes more profit? Which taxi company has the ability to expand in the long term?

In Malaysia, some transport companies are still operating everlasting Mercedes 911 lorry, 911 is very robust and has the lowest ownership cost. Why only small transport companies operate 911 and these companies never expand their business? Why large transport companies never consider to operate 911 although it has the lowest ownership cost?

    :drinks:

  11. It is better for MH to lease there planes as someone will take the deappreciation and it won't build into MH cost as well whoever said MH 10year 330's planes need to replace this is Malaysia not Singapore there are no deapprecitation laws in Malaysia.

Let's not forget that A333E is definitely not as enviromentally friendly as the new B787s and A350s. A333Es will definitely an old junk in 15 years time. Today's frequent traveller are smart enough and to choose the airlines which can offer them best value with of course not compromising on the service. Just look at SQ, Emirates, CX for example. We can't simply fail to ignore that certain airlines like Emirates, Ethihad and even Qatar are now emerging and far better than MH in terms of products wise and value wise.

  13. But they have 380's why 77w they have the lasiest 744 fleet. Add BI as competiton for Kangaroo Route

Given who are the MH decision makers, it won’t be a surprise that MH will order 77W soon.

What about VN, EK, EY, SQ?

Unless MH is to consider to buy from Russian or Chinese, MH will accept whatever real life operational numbers from Boeing or Airbus. Does MH has a choice?

Boeing subcontractors are all over the places e.g. ACM in Bukit Kayu Hitam produce components for 777. The major difference between 787 and previous practice is Boeing insisted major subcontractors to share the commercial risks e.g. R&D.

Boeing is planning to ramp up 787 production rate in 2 years time.

    :drinks:

  14. That will mean when MH recieve there 330's, UA will be reciveing 787's and be ahead 2 years.

Last major 787 order; UA ordered 25 numbers of 787 and A350 in December 09, deliveries are expected between 2016 and 2019.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/business/global/09air.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=united%20order%20787&st=cse

If MH request, believe earlier 787 delivery slot is avialable e.g. 2014/15.

SQ A33E are leased and will be replaced by 787 and A350. But MH is unlikely to replace A33E until 2021 the earliest.

    No doubt, A330, A300, 757, 767, DC-10, DC-3 will be flying well into 2020 and beyond.

    :drinks:

  15. Sorry for poor spelling, but you have forgot S7, lcal and QF. S7 cancelled all their 787-8 all 15 LCAL cancelled 3 QF cancelled all 787-8's

I think the word you are looking here is exaggerating.

The only cancelations we have seen so far is more like transfering from one type to another - example ANA's 783 to 788s.

Besides, Airbus already saying that the 330s will be flying well into 2020 and beyond.

When we get our A330 NEXT YEAR, it will only be two years younger than SQ's current A330s

Also, its OUR A330s that needs to be sent to the Mojave desert or be leased/sold to other airlines.

Precisely. In economics sense, its much more favourable to get something new soon to replace what we have than queue up for something that is coming in...what, 2018-19? By then MAS's fleet is already 20+ year old.

I'd wont say the A380 is a blunder, but its teething problem IS quite severe.

One thing though - If MAS would buy 787/350 - which one will it be?

the 788 or they will wait for the 789?

for the 350 would they go for the 800 (to replace the 332s) or the 900 or even the 1000?

  16. Don't forget these days BI don't even have any soverniors other than a note pad, pen and folder

Nope. The 732s only had the gold touch done up after the 752s came into service, and similar F seats (like those on the 752s) were introduced on the 732s. F was reduced from 12 seats to just 8, within the same cabin footprint, on the 732s.
