  1. Malindo Air upbeat on flying 3 million passengers in 2014 The Malaysian Reserve | December 12, 2013 The air carrier is upbeat on its projection for next year due to increase in capacity and soaring demand for air travel to and from Malaysia. By P Prem Kumar Malindo Air’s chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy said the hybrid airline is aiming to fly three million passengers in 2014, a target driven by increasing capacity and upbeat demand for air travel to and from Malaysia. Chandran said although the airline is hardly a year old, it has generated great confidence in its first 260 days in operation with 800,000 passengers. He estimates 150,000 will fly Malindo Air in December alone. He said the airline is expecting delivery of up to 15 new aircraft in 2014 to cater for new destinations and increased flights. “We are looking to take delivery of seven ATR turboprops while the remainder will be Boeing aircraft. With the turboprops, we will be adding frequencies to some key domestic routes such as Penang, Kota Baru and Johor Baru. “We have also applied to fly to Singapore. If the approval is granted, we will be flying to Singapore from Subang airport,”said Chandran. He said to ensure better network coverage for its customers, Malindo Air will shift its focus towards the international air travel market from domestic skies. According to Chandran, the airline will next year focus more on rationalising its network, marketing and building the load factor and passenger volume. He said the airline has set aside RM10 million to spend on marketing and promotional initiatives next year. “After India, we will pause for a while before announcing our next destination, to justify the economies of scale to ensure cost efficiency in the company. “Our real agenda of putting Malaysia as a transit hub is getting into place. The only missing piece in the puzzle is China. But that (China routes) is not for now,” he said. The carrier currently serves Bangladesh and Indonesia, beside Malaysian domestic routes, using nine aircraft (six Boeing 737-900s and three ATR 72-600s), all leased from its parent Lion Air. Its maiden flight to India will be launched at the end of this year. Since its launch early this year, Malindo Air has set a target of taking delivery of 10 new aircraft every year and to have a fleet of 100 aircraft within the next 10 years. The Lion Air group, controlled by billionaire Rusdi Kirana, is Indonesia’s biggest airline with over 50% market share there. Last March, Lion Air’s yet to- be delivered planes totalled 600 when it inked a RM79.2 billion deal to purchase 234 Airbus aircraft. The airline has a similar giant aircraft deal with Boeing. The aircraft are not only for Lion Air but also for its other airlines such as Malindo Air, in which it has a 49% stake. The remaining stake is owned by aircraft maintenance specialist National Aerospace and Defence Industries Sdn Bhd. - See more at: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/business/2013/12/12/malindo-air-upbeat-on-flying-3-million-passengers-in-2014/#sthash.CoUjWVVD.dpuf
  2. Malindo to fly KL-New Delhi route from Dec 30BY B.K. SIDHU PETALING JAYA: Malindo Air has got the nod to fly into New Delhi and Mumbai, destinations that low-cost airline AirAsia X gave up over a year ago. The routes are currently only served by Malaysia Airlines and the entry of Malindo is likely to intensify competition and force airfares to fall. India will be added to the Malindo network just nine months after the airline began operations in the country. It will also add Trichy, a southern point in India on Jan 3. It wil begin flying the KL-Delhi route on Dec 30 and KL-Mumbai on Feb 15. Malindo will use the slots given up by AAX for Dehli and Mumbai. Malindo, which calls itself a hybrid airline, is a joint venture between Malaysia’s Nadi Sdn Bhd and Indonesia’s Lion Grup, which also owns Lion Air. For starters, Malindo is offering a promotional all-inclusive one-way fare of RM599 each to Mumbai and Delhi. For Trichy the fare starts at RM399 one-way all-inclusive. “The decision to start our services to these long-awaited new routes emphasises the value and importance of tourism, trade and business links between India and Malaysia,” Malindo chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy said. Malindo has begun ticket sales and is said to have received numerous bookings for the flights to India. Though it is targeting passengers from Malaysia, the airline is a vital link for Indonesia’s Lion Air gateway into that part of the world.

  4. Rusdi: Myanmar is next market In the last three months since Malindo Air’s launch in March, Indonesian tycoonRusdi Kirana has not been to the Kuala Lumpur office, simply because operations had taken off the way he had planned it. And seven months into its launch, Malindo has flown over half-a-million passengers. It now plies 17 routes and has a dozen more routes in mind and will have 20 aircraft by the end of its second year. At present, it has nine aircraft and operates out of two hubs, the KL International Airport (KLIA) and Subang SkyPark. Rusdi’s PT Lion Grup owns a 49% equity stake in Malindo, with the rest held by Nadi Sdn Bhd. He was in Kuala Lumpur last week to attend a test flight on Runway 3 of KLIA2. Later, he met StarBizWeek at Malindo’s office in Ara Damansara, where he says, “If there is a problem, I will be here more often, but I don’t have to because Malindo has taken off and its growth is within our expectations.” Once initial expectations have been met, future aspirations tend to grow. With that, Rusdi says moving forward, Malindo has to grow faster and bigger. Malindo began operations by plying the KLIA-to-Kota Kinabalu and KLIA-to-Kuching routes, using two brand new B737-900ER aircraft. In August, it started its second hub, flying the ATR out of Subang to destinations within Peninsular Malaysia. Of its nine aircraft, six are jets and three ATRs. Its 17 routes include three international routes - Dhaka in Bangladesh, Jakarta and Bali. The airline’s next market is India, with flights to Mumbai, New Delhi and Kochi initially planned, but it is waiting for the necessary approvals. Flying to Chennai would come later. If it can achieve that this year, it would be a big feat, something which chief executive officer Chandran Rama Muthy is counting on. “We did not expect our flights to Dhaka to be so popular. That was a pleasant surprise, and we are now looking at adding Chittagong on our route map,” he says. After India, the next market Malindo is targeting is China. The airline is hoping to materialise that some time next year. China is a big market and Kuala Lumpur will be the hub for Indonesians flying there. Malindo is looking at several cities for flights into China, but for now, both Rusdi and Chandran are keeping mum on the destinations. Once China is in the fold, the airline will be much bigger than what it is now. Rusdi expects Malindo to be 150% bigger in 18 months’ time. “I think it is not surprising for Malindo to meet expectations for now because it has a lot of support from us (at Lion Grup) in terms of aircraft, human resources, experience and expertise,” says Rusdi. While Malindo’s growth has surprised many, it is normal to Rusdi, given this support and a market that is demanding for such services. The low-cost theme is not new in Malaysia, as AirAsia has given travellers the first bite into this segment. “It is different from the time I started Lion Air. We had little money, one aircraft and things were not like what they are now. This is why it has grown and I have told Chandran that Malindo has to grow bigger and faster,” Rusdi adds. For that, Rusdi says Malindo needs to open more routes and “we have to improve on our marketing”. “They have (sorted) things in the first year, set the basic foundation, operations and maintenance services, and offer good service. Now, we really need to grow in scale and become bigger, and I have given them the next one year to grow,” he adds. But is there a big enough market for Malindo to tap into to be of that size? “Today’s growth is within expectations even though competition is tough. But we needed to make a difference when we entered the market and as a result both yields and fares are down,” says Rusdi. Since Malindo’s entry, some airlines have been dumping fares to get passengers and a report said that as of August, Malindo had managed to secure a 7% share of capacity in the Malaysian domestic market, with both Malaysia Airlines and AirAsiaresponding by increasing capacity to fight the competition. Malindo’s target is to carry one million passengers by March 2014, and if the Indian routes are added, this is possible, says Chandran. Adds Rusdi, “By the end of its second year of operations, Malindo would have flown 2.5 million passengers.” By then, he expects Malindo to break even, although he remains optimistic that it could happen even earlier. “I am optimistic it will happen in 1.5 years’ time.” What’s next? And while Rusdi has high expectations for Malindo, he has also mapped out a growth strategy for his entire airline group. He and his brother Kusnan Kirana started Lion Air over a decade ago with one aircraft. Today, the group has over 100 aircraft. The company, PT Lion Grup, has ordered 700 new aircraft to become a regional player, competing with the likes ofAirAsia, Jetstar and even the full-service carriers (FSCs). Unlike his rivals who started expanding much earlier, Kuala Lumpur is his first hub out of Indonesia via Malindo. Kuala Lumpur, as a matter of fact, will be Lion Grup’s gateway to the world. But recently, Rusdi’s Lion Grup ventured into Thailand by setting up Thai Lion Air with some non-airline investors. The airline is expected to take off by year-end. Although Rusdi declines to discuss how big his airline group is aiming to be, he is pretty ambitious. Part of that big game plan is to see the Lion name being hubbed at many points in Asean and Asia as a whole. And to build that base, he is looking the way of partnerships. “We try to be humble,” Rusdi says. The move into Thailand surprised many, as it has many players. Can Thai Lion Air make it when many others have failed then? “Thailand has many players but offers a big tourism potential. And with the Asean Open Skies Policy to be implemented, it is good to have a hub in Thailand. Our first flight will leave Bangkok for Kuala Lumpur and this will give the Indonesians and Bangladeshis that we are now carrying on Malindo a new place to go,” says Rusdi. For starters, Thai Lion Air, which will have two aircraft, has gotten the nod from the Thai authorities to fly both domestic and international routes. If he can pull Thai Lion Air off, then he would have launched three airlines this year, the other two being Malindo and Batik Air, an FSC operating domestic routes in Indonesia. “Batik Air is seeing good growth, as although it is an FSC, its fare pricing is 40% lower than other FSCs,” Rusdi explains, adding that “the Lion Air group now carries 100,000 passengers daily and the numbers are just growing”. Lion Air controls nearly 50% of the domestic air market in Indonesia. “Although we have Batik Air and Lion Air, Malindo will still offer international connectivity for the group,” he says. Batik Air was originally planned to be a long-haul airline operating international routes, but has moved on to become an FSC since that plan was shelved. Apart from Lion Air, Batik Air, Malindo and Thai Lion Air, the airline has two more airlines within its group, namely, Wings Air and Lion Business Jet services. Wings Air offers rural air services in Indonesia, while Lion Business Jet services, which it started two years ago, offers executive jet services. “With Thai Lion Air, we will have five airlines. We are targeting one more next year,” Rusdi discloses. His target market? Myanmar, although Vietnam is also on his radar screen. “After three (launches in a year), we need to consolidate, although we will focus on (setting a new partnership) next year,” Rusdi adds. “Our sixth airline will be launched next year and Myanmar could be next,” he reveals. Cost-wise, Rusdi says the airline has built a large enough infrastructure to support growth, and that even in an economic slowdown, its unit cost will remain low. On an Asean scale, he expects consolidation, as he feels there are too many airlines, with no expectations for new entrants into the market either. “What we will see is bigger airlines but fewer number of players,” he says http://www.thestar.com.my/Business/Business-News/2013/10/19/Rusdi-Myanmar-is-next-market-He-wants-Malindo-to-grow-150-in-18-months.aspx
  5. Lion ready to expand into Thailand this year Nurfika Osman, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Business | Wed, August 21 2013, 11:37 AM The country’s largest private airline, Lion Air, is set to strengthen its foothold in Southeast Asia’s aviation market by establishing Thai Lion in Thailand by the end of this year. The group CEO Rusdi Kirana said that the company is going to collaborate with a local airline in Thailand. “We expect to launch Thai Lion at the end of this year and we are preparing 70 to 80 aircraft for the operation,” Rusdi said in Jakarta on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 2nd Congress of Indonesian Diaspora. He said that the firm plans to officially announce the new Bangkok-based airline in the next month or two. Thai Lion will likely use the narrow body jet liner Boeing B737-900 Extended Range (ERs) and the B737-800 Next Generation (NGs) aircraft. “We are going to strengthen our networks in Thailand, China and Japan with the new airline. Some routes that we will provide during the first phase of the operations are Bangkok–Jakarta, Bangkok–Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok–Chiang Mai,” he said. To help support its expansion, he said that the group secured loans from banks in the US and Europe. However, he refused to elaborate further on how much the firm has invested for its new business in Thailand. Thailand was one of Indonesia’s most important markets for tourism and business investment. According to the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry’s information center data, The number of Thai tourists visiting the country grew by 16.15 percent during January–May 2013 to 40,668 from 35,013 in the same period last year. Bilateral agreement between the two countries allow aircraft from each nation to fly as many as 70 times a week. The group also wants to capture the potential air travel market in Myanmar and Australia in 2014. Before expanding its business in Bangkok, the company had collaborated with Malaysia’s National Aerospace and Defence Industries (NADI) by setting up Malindo Airways. The carrier, whose name was derived from the names of respective countries: Malaysia and Indonesia, was launched in mid March this year and it currently serves domestic routes in Malaysia and international routes from Malaysia to Dhaka, Bangladesh and Pekanbaru, Indonesia with other destinations planned including China, Vietnam, India, Cambodia and other Indonesian cities. Malindo currently operates four B737-900 ERs and two Avions de Transport Régional ATR 72-600s. In addition, he said the group aims to make Hang Nadim Airport in Batam, Riau Islands as its new hub in a bid to get closer to destinations in Asia and the Middle East. They plan to start providing international flight services from Batam to destinations in the Middle East, China and Thailand next year. “We also chose Batam because the airport in Cengkareng [soekarno-Hatta International Airport] is overcrowded. We need a new hub to accommodate the international traffic,” he went on. Last week, the group announced that it wanted to expand its networks by entering smaller cities across the country to tap into the high potential of the air travel market from destinations with shorter runways such as Mentawai (West Sumatra), Banda Neira (Maluku), and Jailolo (North Maluku). They want to purchase 50 units of sub-20 N219 aircraft from the state run aircraft manufacturer PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) with an option to buy another 50. Each N219 will cost around US$4.5 million to 5.5 million. http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2013/08/21/lion-ready-expand-thailand-year.html The website : http://www.lionair.co.th/
  6. Malindo Air expanding to India and China Updated: June 15, 2013 MIRI: Malaysia’s first hybrid airline, Malindo Air will be introducing their international flight by end of this year. Malindo Air chief executive officer, Chandran Rama Murthy said their first international flight will be on the India route and followed by southern China route. “We strongly feel there is great potential between India and Malaysia market based on the amount of traffic movement between both countries. First, we are looking on the Krichit and Delhi,” he said during the press conference after the historic landing of Malindo Air at Miri Airport on Friday. He added, after that Malindo Air will be targetting the market on southern part of China especially at Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Kunming. When asked why the neighbouring country like Singapore is not being a primary target for Malindo Air to penetrate, he said that they are actually targetting the Singapore market by the end of this year. “However, we have to refer back to the objective of Malindo Air which is making Malaysia as transit hub. Singapore may have 3 to 5 million population but there are a billion population in India and China so that by targetting India and China it will definitely boosting the airlines profit,” he said. In the meantine, after the success of their inaugural flight to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Sibu, Malindo Air again achieved another milestone when they landed in Miri for the first time. Sarawak’s Assistant Minister for Communication, Datuk Lee Kim Shin and his entourage greeted the passengers with a traditional Sarawakian reception. “We are glad to have Malindo Air flying into Miri, as it connects travellers between Borneo and Peninsular thus providing more options not only for those who are with oil and gas companies, but also for tourist who are using Miri as gateway to various national parks in this region,” said Chandran. “Response from the public is good. Within the first month of operation at the end of April, we registered 50,000 passengers and it increase on May when there were 125,000 passengers have been recorded using the airlines,” he said. The support given by the state government, public, and media really boosting the airline to be one of the challengers in the airlines industry. “The first month of non-factor was 70 per cent while the second month of non-factor reached 80 per cent and we are trying to add more flights especially to Sabah and Sarawak,” he said. He added that Bintulu and Tawau will be the next destinations that Malindo Air will be flying to. “Once we had Bintulu and Tawau in our flight plan, we had covered the whole major route in Sabah and Sarawak,” said Chandran. By next year, the Sabah-Sarawak route also will connected by Malindo Air via Kuching to Kota Kinabalu, Sibu to Kota Kinabalu and Miri to Kinabalu. “Miri has a lot thing to offer especially with their tourism industry like the unique Niah and Mulu Caves and we are working closely with Sarawak Tourism Board,” he said. Malindo Air operates three daily flights to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching and one daily flight to Sibu and Miri. They are expecting to add Tawau and Bintulu in their flight route soon. Malindo Air also operates three daily flights to Kota Bharu, two daily flights to Penang and one daily flight to Johor Bahru from Skypark Terminal in Sultan Abdul Azizi Shah Airport in Subang. 8.
