  1. arrived safely in KUL at 2120 just now. Still in KLIA waiting for erl to go to putrajaya then home.

    TK picture no.2, my window is 2 windows behind door 2L, saw you on obs hill.... hehe

     

    good flight, nice crew, ... not easy to ride a jumbo whole length of peninsular...

     

    wait for my tr.... :)

     

    btw... tk's last pix... can catch a glimpse of PapaQuebec.... probably their second aircraft soon...

  2. Timothy, do you mind, could you share the cost of PPL course?

     

    So far I only have an estimated figure from Sabah Flying Club, and was given RM35k for completion of their PPL program. Still waiting for a proper breakdown and more info, ie: if costs change for 1 on 1 tuition and if taking the course full time or part time will make a difference.

     

    Anyone else care to join me ? :p


  3. Hi all, hoping to get some insight into obtaining a PPL license in Malaysia. Some background :

     

    I'm a recent Engineering graduate and finally have the freedom (and finances) to take up powered flight training. I'm from Bintulu, where the ex-GGIFA school was. Since they've closed down, I was thinking of other alternatives around M'sia.

     

    Important factors for me are duration of the training and cost. I'm looking to set aside no more than 6 months to gain a PPL. I've already done some "taster" flights while in the UK and used to be part of my university gliding team.

     

    I'm open to flight schools outside the country as well if anyone has recommendations :)

     

    I've already looked up the DCA list for PPL training, however most places I called don't seem keen to offer 1 to 1 tuition ... or have rather inflexible times. I would also prefer to pre-study any materials I can from books instead of taking classroom sessions.

    Mayb all these problems can be seen fr a diff perspective....mayb the MH tech guys n whoever is incharge r working their butts off to resolve this

    but the problem may arise from the vendor who sold them n created the website......they could hav sold the idea to god knows who n convince them this is the "Best airline website" in the world but in reality it is ions behind our neighbours in the likes of CX, SQ, TG.

     

    I'm quite sure the website for MH n Enrich was done but outside vendors who does not really know how to design an airline website or the person incharge in MH back then for this website design was not net savvy enough to understand the basics of a workable n user friendly website

     

    This begs the question, why would MH not have an in-house tech team to supervise / audit the building of the website as it goes along ?

     

    Did an elementary tracert on where my data goes upon starting the booking engine, and it seems to route through something called SKALI.net. Want to know what's more horrible than time-outs ? I found the data passed is NOT SECURED. Credit card info, DOB, email, names ... poofff ... if someone had a sniffer around then the data is basically handed over to them UNENCRYPTED.

     

    MAS = Mana Ada System.

     

    I've heard this mantra since '97 when they made the move to KLIA and supposedly fielded a "new" passeger handling system. Was stuck for 2 days as a young traveller then. I don't mean this as a bashing post but security wise, this is probably the worst website I've used. I believe the average wordpress blog has better security features. Also, just in case some tech people are watching in; why do you leave footers on most pages with contact info ? ie: Jeffry Elliot. j3ff@thatairline.com etc. Also much of your software remains unpatched.

    PATCH THEM NOW.

  5. Why not use amphibians for inter-city routes too ? I don't know of a town/city in S'wak which dosen't have at least 1 major river running nearby. Would save the 20-30minutes car ride to the airport itself.

     

    Personally I'm hoping for Cessna Caravans instead of the Twin Otters which IMHO are too large to offer flexible (convenient) schedules.


  6. MH is a national airline / flag carrier.

     

    A uniform for "Malaysian AIrlines" would reflect that.

     

    Since when has grey been a prominent color in Malaysia ? Also whats with the 4 button vest ? I'm no fashionista but its in pretty bad taste imho.

     

    Now we have Grey + Blue as the MH colors , image see-ing a blue check in desk manned by a man in a grey suit. :aggressive:


  7. I'm curious as to what pilots do during cruise :p

     

    I once asked an ang mo MH F50 captain and he said he would start planning the next leg or fill paperwork and enjoy the scenery. This was in the 90's and for intra-borneo routes so no iPads, smart phones or Kindles ...

     

    But what would the crew of say B737 KUL-KCH or even longer haul flights do? Thanks TK if you would entertain my question :)

    Having done my final year project looking at aerospace projects, I've been intricately interested in the way instruments relay information to the pilots. This was outside my scope of study ( was more towards lean manufacturing etc) but now that's its summer for me I guess this may as well be the best time to kick things off :D

     

    For example, on airspeed indicators, planes such as the spitfire and DH-106 Comet used what we have now on our car dashboards, the circular meter

    So when did people start moving towards this new method of displaying information , and has it been an improvement over the old method ?

     

    I've started this thread in hope of further input and will continue updating as I start digging :) Planning to visit all the aviation museums in the UK during my last month here :)


  9. Ah that familiar "can do attitude". How does that compare to the "Malaysia Boleh" attitude? :p

     

    The Russians are really behind on aircraft manufacturing nowadays. Their Sukhoi superjet is heavily depended on Western technology and avionics. I seriously don't know what the Chinese got to learn from them, may be getting the basics right and get the design off the ground perhaps. It is sad that the Chinese has only the Russians to rely on, as the west pretty much sanctioned the access of technology away from the Chinese, while allowing the Russians the access to their technology.

     

    The Chinese might have a can do attitude to match with their cash. However, they still lack the refining and creative sophistication that produce out of things on their own without copying others.

     

    You'll be suprised how many Malaysians are within Airbus, Gulfsteam or even Lockheed Martin ! :) Did my internship with Airbus in Filton and there were enough Malaysians there to start an unofficial "Malaysian Soc" with around 60 of us engineers.

     

    The Chinese are mostly lacking in engine technology, imho the most complicated part of a plane.

     

    As for criticizing "china products" one just has to look at how fast they reach the market. They don't spend years and years fielding a new phone. There's little bureaucracy (or quality checks:P) but that was the way it was with Western countries back in the 1920's . You made a contraception and tried to sell it asap.

     

    With the cash China is dishing out, I won't surprised when "Made in China" is a mark of quality.

    If he could take a swipe at the German Chancellor (notoriously strict) then I think he could take a roundabout way of complimenting Airbus's automation.

     

    This share swap was a very effective way for TF to kill off Firefly because it was seriously starting to compete aginst AirAsia. All that hard work to build up Firefly's jet operations have gone down the tube.

     

    Doubt it. Unless MH board is seriously incompetent and hailed TF as their master straight after share swap...


  11. Golden lounge manager Mohd Husaini Ariffin said the improvement included major renovation at the lounge, from May 9 to June 18, with the addition of new features such as sports bar, kids room and games room.

     

    During the renovation, he said the airlines would place the business and first class customers in three alternative lounges.

     

    The lounges are regional lounge at the main terminal for first class guests and China Airlines lounge and Malaysia Airport CIP lounge at mezzanine floor, satellite building for first class and business class guests.

     

    1) The MAS lounge at the Satellite terminal already has a kids/games room. They used to have a p/s2 in there as well, so what is this new renovation supposed to bring?

    2) Regional lounge will be designated only for First passengers? Would C ticket holders be turned away ?

    3) What's Malaysia Airport CIP lounge ?
