  4. I don't know about this site, but Aeromalaysia had a topic on it :- http://www.aeromalaysia.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=666
  5. I guess you all agree that the best TV ads on Malaysian TV always comes during this time of the year. And this is year is no exception. This year Malaysia Airlines pay tribute to the former students of Kirkby College UK. For the benefits of those who are not in the country at the moment, here's the TV ad :- http://hq.malaysiaairlines.com/merdeka/merdeka05.htm The site below provides an excellent background information on Kirkby College. It's unique in the sense that it's a college set up in the UK solely for Malayan students, and the site where the late Tunku Abdul Rahman first announced the date of Malayan independence. http://www.kirkbytimes.co.uk/memories_of_k...ng_college.html Selamat Hari Merdeka . God bless.
  6. In Malaysia the only credit card that's directly linked to airline redemption is RHB/Air Asia card. General credit cards like Maybank, Citibank etc. can convert your monthly balance into 'points' which only then converted into actual airline mileages. You don't really earn mileages as much this way. Not available to Malaysian residents though, but world's largest airline (AA) teams up with world's largest bank (Citibank) for their mileage credit card. Anyhow, I came across this article on CNN a while ago about airline credit card. Interesting... 7. I wouldn't take Hishamuddin's view seriously, he's obviously talking out of his ass. Mind you he made the comment after "closing the Special Forum on Current Economic Issues organised by the Umno Youth Economic Bureau" (as quoted by the Bernama). I'm not surprised that he explicitly mentioned the word "Malay" rather than "Malaysian" considering he's the Chief of Umno Youth movement. This was no more than a publicity stunt just to show his supporters that he's doing his job - Umno protects the interests of Malay rich businessmen, ooops i mean Malay people. I guess he's too used to the word "Malay" rather than "Malaysian" when speaking at an Umno-organized event but probably meant to say otherwise. On the other hand, he is also a cabinet minister who represents ALL Malaysians regardless of racial orgin which makes his statement hugely inappropriate. Referring to MAS having a foreign MD his view is similar to being "colonized" again - how shallow can one get? Again - a publicity stunt to his supporters' benefit since Merdeka Day is only days away. Now you see why I dare say that nobody should pay any attention to what Hishamuddin said. There's no real racial issues here. And I do hope MAS gets a foreign MD - that'll be a slap on Hishamuddin's face
  8. KUL does not need to wait till Routes 2008 before there is a possibility that BA, QF, NZ, NW etc might return. The marketing arms of MAS, MAB & Tourism Malaysia *should* have done a better job in attracting them back by now without having to rely too much on such aviation events. KL hosting Routes 2008 would be a great promotional tool but what would happen if it was BKK that get to host it then? If you have a good product backed by an excellent promotion, people will surely buy it. The same goes to KUL and the airline industry - the absence of BA, QF and American carriers just goes to show that there's something lacking at KUL. Enough acting like a crybaby just because we are 'unfortunately' located between the mighty SIN & BKK. That's old excuse.
  9. KUA only has scheduled services to KUL on MH. Over the past 15 years or so I don't think KUA ever had MH service to anywhere but KUL/SZB. During the days of Pelangi Air, they had SZB-TOD-KUA-TOD-SZB and Silk Air also briefly served KUA in the 90's.
  10. MH currently codeshares on BMI services out of LHR to key cities in the UK and Ireland. I heard rumours that MH might opt for KLM as their UK partner if the Skyteam deal pulls through. Do you think it's a good idea? From the trend that I see from my own circle of friends and family, all prefer to fly via LHR. The main reason is that most prefer to have a stopover in London (for shopping or whatnot) before returning to KUL. There is no comparing Amsterdam with London as a city destination when you deal with Malaysians. Then there is also the mentality that you could only transfer to 'domestic' flights out of the nation's main airport (LHR in this case), when my university mate once booked a flight on KLM's KUL-AMS-Bristol most people were surprised to know that you don't always have to fly via London to get to UK cities . If and when MH joins Skyteam, I'm all for AMS being the hub to connect to european cities not served by MH but BMI cooperation should stay put to feed passengers out of LHR. KLM services may complement BMI's service to secondary UK cities including BHX which does not have a BMI service out of LHR. Brits who don't live in the Southeast would have a choice to skip LHR and go via AMS instead if they wish to.
  11. It was operated via VIE at some point but i distinctly remembered it was operated nonstop towards the end of the service. Would have to double check with my old edition of Going Places later...
  12. My unscientific way of telling whether a European city would work is that, if a non-stop service could not be justified for that particular city, then it would not survive in the long run. This was exactly the case for MAD, BRU and ZAG. On the other hand, MUC was operated non-stop when MAS last flew there, so that's an exception to the rule. Anyone knows why?
  13. With AK having a hub in SIN, other LCC wouldn't stand a chance against the might of AK. Isn't that what Tony always dream of? Set up a hub MNL then they'd get all 4 corners of SE Asia covered.
  14. I have my doubts on the report on "EXCEPT bki, kch, pen, lgk", you know lah this clueless reporters. MAS's domestic operations will most likely be changed but probably not as drastic as it appears in the report. My guess at this stage would be, the number of domestic flights between domestic points operated by MAS will be reduced, and to make up for it these flights will be operated by AK instead. No need to panic guys
  15. Oh, it's that time of the year again? July and (especially) August is when most shopping malls around KL are full with rich Arabs. Not bad at all to the local economy
  16. Congratulations on the new site! I'm guessing other people might have the same question, so here goes... I see that members here are regulars at Aeromalaysia.com. I understand that there was a disagreement between some of you and the moderators of that site which was made apparent in the "3rd moderator suggestion" thread. Is Malaysianwings meant to be a rival / alternative to that site? There are not that many of us Malaysian enthusiasts to begin with, and now we seem to have a split between 2 sites. Shouldn't we all stay together in a single forum? After all, both sites will be discussing more or less (or exactly) the same current Malaysian aviation news anyway... I would appreciate if someone could outline the ACTUAL objective of this site. Thank you
