A modified Boeing 747 owned by McMinnville-based Evergreen Aviation made its first fire retardant drop Monday in the continental U.S. over wildfires raging in California. The massive aircraft -- which can dump 20,000 gallons of water or retardant in one giant splash or a series of smaller drops -- is flying for the California Dept. of Forestry and Fire Protection, said Evergreen spokesman, Jim Baynes. "Thus far, reviews of the aircraft, effectiveness, and overall capability have been very positive," Baynes said. The 747 made air drops on the Oak Glen fire, a 1,000 acre blaze burning in the San Bernadino National Forest in heavy chaparral, oak woodland and mixed pines, vegetation that has not burned since 1924, fire officials said. The so-called "supertanker," just completed a publicity tour of Europe and Alaska, where it made its first drop on a live fire in Spain in mid-July. During the trip, the plane also made two passes over a fire near Fairbanks, dropping over 20,000 gallons of retardant on the Railbelt Complex of fires. Evergreen's air tanker is far larger and faster than the aging fleet of propeller-driven tankers regularly called in -- at great expense to agencies like the U.S. Forest Service -- to help corral forest fires in Oregon and elsewhere. Evergreen officials said the company invested more than $50 million and spent 20,000 engineering hours to develop and modify the aircraft. Its payload is about seven times the volume of the federal governments largest air tanker. It uses a pressurized system that allows the plane to drop its load through four nozzles from the bottom of the plane's rear fuselage from a higher, and therefore, safer altitude and also to make drops at night. The plane can also reach fires fast, traveling 600 mph, at least twice the speed of other federal air tankers in the fleet. The swath of retardant on a full drop, Evergreen officials said, is up to three miles long. Laura Graham of Evergreen Aviation said the tanker also made retardant runs on the giant 121,762 acre Station fire to the Northeast of Los Angeles, which has burned dozens of homes and threatens thousands more. Graham said Evergreen was unable to get a helicopter in the air to film the drops, but the Los Angeles FOX Television affiliate videotaped the aircraft for 12 minutes. "We couldn't have asked for better video,'' Graham said. "Jetman" makes history flying across English Channel Posted 26 September 2008 @ 08:33 am EST Yves Rossy, also known as "Jetman" or "Fusionman," landed successfully in England after crossing the English Channel using a single jet-propelled wing he invented. Rossy jumped out of a plane in Calais, France to begin his jet powered flight across the channel at 2:06 p.m. local time to make history as the first person fly solo across the channel with a single wing. "He's gotta feel on top of the world" said one of the anchors at National Geographic channel which broadcasted live the "Flight of the Jetman." Rossy arrived at an English field 13 minutes later to conclude event. Press was waiting to interview him as many people also greeted him. Rossy described how he felt. "Great. Really great. Only one road thank you to all the people who did it with me, I give it to them because I am the only one who was flying but so many people were with me on that crossing so I want to say thank you." After his adventurous flight, Rossy expressed his desire to share his dream come true with people "Next is to continue this project because is a sign that there is a big potential to fligh like this," he said "I hope many people have the opportunity to fly like this...a little bit like a bird." On 25 September, one man will risk his life to attempt the impossible – to become the first man to cross the English Channel with only a single jet-propelled wing strapped to his back. Swiss pilot Yves Rossy will be the first person in history to fly across the English Channel using a special wing. Known as FusionMan, Rossy will jump from a plane more than 3,000 metres above ground, fire up the jets on his wing and soar across the English Channel at speeds approaching 190 kilometres per hour. Rossy will trace the route of French aviator Louis Blériot who dared to be the first to cross the English Channel in an airplane 99 years earlier. Broadcast live on National Geographic Channel, we will document Rossy’s flight from his take-off above Cap Blanc Nez, France, to his landing, approximately 15 minutes later across the English Channel in Dover, UK. Rossy’s flight will also be streamed live online. To achieve this historic feat, Rossy must overcome significant challenges along the way. He has never flown for longer than 8 minutes, his wing weight and measurements must be incredibly precise – even the addition of cameras mounted on the wing to record his flight may affect how long he is able to stay in the air. While significant progress has been made assembling Airplane #1, first flight is being rescheduled due to slower than expected completion of work that traveled from supplier facilities into Boeing's final assembly line, unanticipated rework, and the addition of margin into the testing schedule. The new delivery schedule is based on a more conservative production plan developed with the 787 partner team. That schedule now targets approximately 25 deliveries in 2009. First flight of the all-new airplane will move into the fourth quarter of this year rather than the end of the second quarter, and first delivery is now planned for the third quarter of 2009 instead of first quarter. Company officials expressed confidence in the new plan and the steps being taken to accelerate program performance. "Over the past few months, we have taken strong actions to confront and overcome start-up issues on the program, and we have made solid progress," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Scott Carson. "Nevertheless, the traveled work situation and some unanticipated rework have prevented us from hitting the milestones we laid out in January. Our revised schedule is built upon an achievable, high-confidence plan for getting us to our power-on and first-flight milestones. Also, while the fundamental technologies and design of the 787 remain sound, we have inserted some additional schedule margin for dealing with other issues we may uncover in testing prior to first flight and in the flight test program." The company said in January it would be conducting a comprehensive assessment of its supply chain and production system capabilities to determine the details of the 787's flight test program and initial delivery profile. As a result of that assessment, the first-year delivery plan announced today will be followed by a more gradual ramp up to full-rate production than previously planned. "We deeply regret the disruption and disappointment these changes will cause for our customers, and we will work closely with each of them to minimize the impact," said Carson. "We have taken significant action to improve supply chain and production system performance, such as our investment in Global Aeronautica, but based on our assessment, the prudent course is to proceed with a more gradual ramp up to full-rate production." Pat Shanahan, 787 vice president and program manager, echoed Carson's comments about the progress being made in 787 factories. "The work that remains to be done on Airplane #1 is well defined, and we can see our way to—and have confidence in—the new milestones we have set for it," said Shanahan. "We have addressed the major challenges that slowed our progress while trying to complete the primary structure—the parts shortages, engineering changes, and manufacturing changes—and we are well into the systems installation that is the precursor to putting power on the airplane for the first time. We have also worked closely with our partners to achieve higher levels of completion of their parts of subsequent airplanes, and we will continue to drive improvements in the supply chain and production system performance," he said. For tracking program progress, Shanahan outlined a series of milestones that will occur before June 30: 787 static and fatigue structural test airplanes will move to their testing locations; Airplanes #3 and #4 will enter final assembly; hardware airworthiness qualifications will be complete; and power on will be achieved. Shanahan also said the program has changed the timing of the introduction of two 787 derivatives. The 787-9, a larger variant of the airplane, will be the first derivative of the baseline 787 with delivery planned for early 2012. The 787-3, a shorter-range model previously slated to deliver in 2010, will now become the second derivative of the airplane family. While research and development costs will likely increase as a result of the 787 schedule change, Boeing expects no change to 2008 earnings guidance. The company continues to expect strong earnings per share growth in 2009 and will provide complete 2009 financial guidance when it holds its first-quarter 2008 earnings conference call later this month. The outlook for the company's defense business and in-production commercial airplane programs remains strong. Boeing will hold a conference call with Scott Carson and Pat Shanahan to discuss the 787 program today at 11:00 a.m. EDT, 8:00 a.m., PDT.

Wednesday December 5, 2007 Subang to become hub for corporate jets By DERRICK VINESH derrickvinesh@thestar.com.my LANGKAWI: Malaysians can expect a “very busy Subang airport” with a RM300mil injection to transform Terminal 3 into Asean’s biggest hub for corporate jets. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the Subang SkyPark, which would be completed by 2010, would “turn Kuala Lumpur into an internationally recognised general aviation hub.” The 20-year-old Subang airport had excellent runway and facilities, he said in an interview yesterday. Initially, 20 local aviation companies would take part and were expected to generate spill over benefits in logistics as well as in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities, he said.
